Be aware --USB Speakers cause distorted sound
Written by RK from Eagle
Oct 16, 2007
I use a tucked-away Macbook Pro with Bose (USB) speakers and a HD Cinema display. Bad idea. EA now writes: "Currently we do not test our Mac titles with USB speaker systems. We have encountered issues with USB speakers and our games having distorted or crackling sounds. We recommend using the default speaker layout for your Mac when playing Electronic Arts titles" Does not work for my set-up... Other than that (for me fatal) flaw, the game looks fine.

Tiger Woods 08 locks my 2.8Ghz iMac
Written by DE from Lake in the Hills
Oct 16, 2007
Every time I hit the play icon it kills the Mac - to the point I need to reach around back and it the power button. I'm using a brand new 24" 2.8Ghz EXTREAM iMac with 2GB of RAM. Contacted EA Sports, they asked for system profiler info, sent that - but what will that tell them? They're sending me a new disc so I can return an unopened copy to Apple Schaumburg. This stinks - I was looking forward to playing.

DO NOT BUY
Written by RM from Lincoln
Oct 16, 2007
Just bought the game and tried to play it on my brand new MacBook pro 17". The game locks up frequently, and it is also not compatible with the MadCatz game controller I bought to use with it (also from apple). I'm guessing I'm not going to be the only one with this problem. . . Sounds like a good class-action law suit apple.

EA Does it Again
Written by JW
Oct 17, 2007
EA has once again brought a new game to the table that revolutionizes how we play. The shot confidence feature brings a personal aspect to the game like never before. The FedEx Cup is great and the new twist to the Tiger Challenge has a much different feel but the concept is still the same. A must have for any fan.

Don't They Test These Games First?
Written by KY from Charleston

I can't really comment on game play because the game keeps freezing before I finish the first hole. I'm using a 15" MBP 2.4 GHZ with 2GB.

Constantly crashes on new iMac 2.8Ghz
Written by MZ from Bartlett
Oct 18, 2007
Installed yesterday - started up fine but once I get onto a course the game crashes almost immediately. My screen goes completely black and I can't do anything except reach around to the back and do a hard shut down of my iMac by holding down the power button. EA makes it almost impossible to reach them for technical support and their online forum doesn't have a search feature. However, it seems like many people have had the exact experience I've had. This is an unfortunate reintroduction of EA to Apple users.

Playable, if you're willing to peform a few workarounds
Written by DB from Albuquerque
Oct 18, 2007
I am very disappointed in this game’s technical performance.
I am using a 17” MB Pro 2.4 GHz with 4GG of RAM. I run the game at the notebook's native resolution: 1900 x 1200.
My biggest complaint is that the game doesn’t respect the ICC color profile that I've set up. Whenever the game switches between the main menu and the actual gameplay (or vice-versa), the game switches the color profile back to the default profile, 'Color LCD'. It's possible to Command-Tab back to the Desktop and switch the profile back in System Preferences, but this has to be done whenever the game switches between the main menu and the actual gameplay (which can be quite often). If I don't manually switch back to my preferred color profile, the game has a blueish tint overcast.
In addition, the game hangs the machine. Occasionally, it isn’t possible to kill the program using the keyboard (Command-Option-Esc). The only solution is to hold the power button because the machine becomes unresponsive.
I've also been disappointed with the lack of Mac support provided by EA's website. It gives the user the distinct feeling that EA really isn't vested in the Mac userbase.
As for the game play, I am impressed by the amount of customization provided. For example, there are easily 80 different ways to adjust the physical characteristics of your player. I wish there was a tutorial mode set on a driving range, where the user could learn the basics of the swing.
Is this game worth it, given all of the technical glitches? I'm not sure. I will offer this: if you're totally into computer golf, it might be worth the hassle of having to implement the various workarounds. If you're only marginally interested, I'd save your money for something else.8 of 14 people found this useful

So i am the 10th review and the 8th person to give it one star. this is pathetic. i got excited about it when i saw it load the menu because i heard about al of the issues, but none the less it crashed like everyone elses. all EA did was wrap their PC version around the mac, nothing is different except the cover says for mac with the smiling finder on the front. well let me tell you i was not smiling what so ever. i demand a recall, and trust me i doubt i will keep this even if apple comes out witha free update.it just doesnt look as slick as every other TW08 game. its graphics didnt please me what so ever, even though i didnt even get to the first tee. all i saw was the mouse and that had me it looks liek its from 2000. i just expecrted nothing but the best for my new 24 inch aluminum iMac. hopefully they might make a good game for mac one day.

works pretty good
Written by DS
Oct 19, 2007
the game is working pretty good for me...intel imac 1 gb ram...there does appear to be some sound issues...ambient sounds come and go...no announcer comments during tiger challenge play unlike x-box version...and no apparent support for a gamepad, at least no option I could find (and the logitech rumblepad 2 gamepad I have works flawlessly with Madden)
Personally amazed by the differences in the game between the pc/mac version and the x-box version...tiger challenge while similar in principle involves totally different challenges/characters and the skills training is totally different as well...why a company would create a product so different across platforms boggles the mind
the gameface feature is neat
the game only looks so-so...pales in comparison to the old links championship series but the trees are 3-d...very limited graphics settings and the grid for putting does not appear to be adjustable so you are really guessing on putts longer than 10 feet (previous golf sim experience really helps here)...
looks like some features/adjustments were simply left out...also occassionally get keyboard issues noted in read-me...manual is a manual in name only...pretty useless...especially in reference to gamepad controls which game doesn't support...also have to laugh at EA for not including, as of today's date, a drop down menu choice for Mac when you try and register the game...makes you wonder about their committment to Mac when you can't register with them
personally, glad to be golfing on the Mac again...but wish EA had done a more thorough job6 of 11 people found this useful

Game hard locks new 24 inch imac
Written by CM
Oct 19, 2007
I make it as far as the menu. Without changing any of the default settings, I click "Play Now" and the game goes to a black screen while loading. No keyboard or mouse response. This is the only time I've had to hard reboot a mac. How could EA not test this game with a brand new imac with the specs to run the game? The EA support forum page for this game has been wiped blank, which is not a good sign.

Buying this is a mistake
Written by VL from Salem
Oct 19, 2007
I pre-ordered this through Apple. What a mistake. I should have waited for the first reviews. I'm running it on the latest, highest end iMac. As others have described, it installs, but freezes and hangs in a way no software on my Macs ever has. Requires a manual restart every time. This game is not ready for prime time and is a waste of money. I'm disappointed that Apple specially promoted (they sent out a special email encouraging prepurchase through their store - which is how I learned about it).

Good overall

I think that this game deserves more credit than people are giving it. People who have given it bad reps have probably not done as much research as they should have. The gamepad does work if you change you swinging style with your profile. Just change it to gamepad. However, in my opinion this is not the best way to play this game. It's way too sensitive. That's why I use my gamepad more like a controller. Just download gamepad companion under games on Apple's website and customize the way you play. The game is very realistic. I like how some of the features work in this game. Like you cannot spin the ball which is like real life and there is no cursor. Overall I really have enjoyed playing TW 08. The great thing about cpu games is that you can customize almost anything.

This game seems awesome. It would just be a whole heck of a lot better if it worked better technically. I have a macBook pro (2.4 ghz, 2Ghz ram, and this new special real graffics card), but it crashes an aweful lot. Hope I can find something that makes me and these other people a bit happier.

What a disappointment!

I guess my hopes for this game were way to high. The game wont start using the built in drive of my MBP, I have to use an external firewire disk drive. I am using a MBP with 2.33 and 2g and the game looks like crud. I have played this game for the PS2 and compared to that... it looks nasty. Sounds nasty too. Sure wish I could get my money back...

I was looking forward to this on my new 24" imac and seem to be having the same lock up problems as everyone else. All I want is a little winter golf. I'm not a big game player so it will be a long time before I would buy another. Apple please stop selling this and let EA fend for itself.
