Heroes of Might and Magic V
While the game play is excellent
Written by BK from Helena
May 10, 2007
I have to agree with the other review. It's so crash prone, it makes gameplay unenjoyable. I did find the crashes were less frequent after I upgraded to 3GBs of RAM, but still, they're happening a lot more than they should.

avoid this game
Written by JW from forest city

While I'll agree with other reviews that say this game has the potential to be a fine RPG, the fact alone that it constantly crashes makes it a bad purchase. Beyond that, after I made it to the third campaign it again crashed and along with being unable to open ANY saved games, auto or otherwise, it now closes out everytime I try to even open the campaign mode. This makes the game unplayable, literally. I implore everyone out there not to give money to people who make inferior products, we only encourage them.
By the way, I'm giving this ridiculous waste of money 1 star because it won't allow me to give it none.30 of 45 people found this useful

Heroes of Might and Magic V
buggy buggy buggy disappointment
Written by NT from Denver
Nov 17, 2007
I bought this game shortly after buying my new Mac Pro to have a NEW game running on my lovely new Mac. HoMM is an awesome game, but this port of HoMM is a HUGE disappointment because it is more buggy than any game I have ever played on the Mac platform - 15 years. It is rare that I give a bad public review because I don't want bad programming to reflect on Macs in general or provide less incentive for new Mac games, but this really is NOT at all acceptable for a game to crash like this on the top desktop Mac with 5G of RAM. The 1.5 patch is only a band-aid. The game continues to be substandard. I don't recommend it to anyone but the very desperate - unless you know programming and can teach Freeverse how to fix the many many bugs. Now I know better - I will never buy another port when they are first released even though I'm sure that discourages future Mac games. But it's not worth it to choose from thousands of buggy games that you pay full price for. There are freeware and inexpensive shareware games available that are very stable, so I will support those developers.

Five months and no patch
Written by JB from Atlantic Highlands

Don't even consider this great game until the idiots who run Freeverse, the company that attempted to port it to Mac (and brilliantly only for Intel machines), sends out a patch to fix the multitude of bugs and crashes.
I have been playing the game with all sorts of jury rigs for five months waiting for them to get a patch out.
Truly sad.
They have changed the layout and graphics of their website, but can't get a patch out to people who paid $50.00 for their product.

Fun but flawed
Written by MR

This is a really fun game and it's great to see more games coming to the Mac. However, this game is very buggy. See the Freeverse support web site before buying this title. It crashes and game data gets corrupted - Freeverse and UBISoft seem to be really behind the 8-ball on this one. Too bad... otherwise it would be a fine game.

The game won't even let me play anywhere from chapter 3 ON, because it's so BUGGY!!!... The Chapter window select shows a blank screen where I should be able to choose my next set of missions... Apple, SELL ONLY PRODUCTS THAT WORK!!! Keeping products that act like this on the shelves soils your name!!!!!!

Not worth the money
Written by RH from Chatsworth

The game looks great and is actually fun when it works. However, Freeverse seem to have done a rather poor job of porting it. To make matters worse, it seems they have no desire or perhaps lack of talent in correcting the issues that currently plague it.

Heroes of Might and Magic V
Worst Strategy Game Ever
Written by AB from BRONXVILLE
Nov 11, 2007
I'm really not sure how anyone could find this game remotely entertaining. Every action is a chore (even battles) none of the controls are intuitive, it runs slowly, and none of the progress you make in one level carries over to the next. You spend all this time developing and progressing your Heroes (the title of the game, for crying out loud) and none of that progress is recognized in the next mission. With only a handful of games out there available for Mac, how is it that such a terrible game made the cut? You can download free games off the internet that are much, much better. What's the return policy on this tripe?

Heroes of Might and Magic V
Fun, but -- no fun
Written by DT from Murrysville
Jun 9, 2007
I'm a die hard Heroes fan who waited a long time for this one to come to the Mac. But I'm afraid it came too soon. Freeverse is not up front (before you buy) about features to disable to help alleviate (not altogether get rid of) all the crashes. And they've known about them for a long time (go to the Freeverse forums and read all about it). There *are* work-arounds to help some, but even after knowing them, the program still crashes. If you *do* buy the game, be sure to check out the forums first to prepare yourself.
Nevertheless, it's a beautiful game and (are you listening Apple?!!) one of the better games for a Mac, as bad as it is.211 of 352 people found this useful

HOMMV
Written by AW from Walterboro

2 Stars Given
Pros:
Great graffics. If you liked HOMM3, this is very similar. Changed names and base creatures to races.
Cons:
No custom maps as far as custom games. Crash problem MUST be fixed.
Overall, I would not purchase this product until they fixed the stability issues.15 of 17 people found this useful

Great game but currently buggy
Written by EM from Bremerton

Heroes of Might and Magic V is a fun game and a worthy addition to the series. For those who don't usually play turn-based strategy games, I can think of no better game to get them started on the genre, and those who do probably already have their copy by now. Until the v1.5 patch is released it's going to be a bit frustrating considering the stability issues (it crashes all of the time), so it might be best to wait to get your copy until they're fixed. Once they are fixed, HoMMV will definitely be a worthy addition to anyone's gaming library.

Not that kind of game....
Written by MM
Nov 23, 2007
I looked at this game for a long time, wondering if I would like it. The pictures on the back and in the open up cover, lead you to think it's a World of WarCraft style of game. This is what caught my attention.
I was sorely disappointed when I bought the game, and ran it to find it was a tactics based RPG.
Now, a lot of people I know love tactics games, but I personally find them slow and after 30 minutes of playing I have to do something else. If you are unsure of what tactics games are, imagine a giant grid, where you can only move and attack to the spaces adjacent to you. You spend half the battle moving around like a game of chess before you actually get to attack, which in the end is just a click of a button where all the actions take place on their own. You just tell the game what to do.
I am not saying this is a bad game, but I don't want others spending a chunk of their paycheck for what they thought was something else.18 of 53 people found this useful

Fun but crashes
Written by DS from Suwanee

I've been a fan of the Heroes saga since day one. This game is just like its predecessors, only with better graphics. However, if you purchase this game, be sure to save often (even with the Autosave) because it crashes after some time (and I'm using a MacBook Pro). Loading is extremely slow and I must admit, there aren't that many single player custom maps and they seem to be harder.
Overall, I'd say it's a fun (and addictiing) game, but expect some crashing.214 of 349 people found this useful

I love all the Heroes games and was extremely excited for five to come out. But when I played it and it gliched I was agrivated. So I download this patch that supposedly will help with files corrupting. I go to play a loaded game and the file was corrupted! I mean come on! Freeverse! How could you possibly mess up something so awesome as heroes!

Great Game- how to fix the flaw!
Written by BS
Apr 30, 2008
Lots of people complain that this game crashes, erases their files, etc.... These are serious problems that Freeverse needs to deal with, especially if they release the sequels, and I hope they do.
However, I found a solution to the above problems with the current 1.51 version. All the crashes on my computer happened after 2 hours of play. The last 6 months I've been testing my theory. I have confirmed it. On my computer a new, but only mid range Mac, if I just save and quit after two hours I have no problems with files, crashing, or anything. Try it. You might play a little less, or a little slower, but hey, people say that's good for you. I've found that I savor the game more this way.59 of 85 people found this useful

Yes its a return in many respects to HOMM III, but thats an all time great game, and this is a much better game than HOMM IV. Its beautiful, and plays without the crashes others describe on my intel imac. OSX 10.4.11. There are many downloadable scenarios on the web.
