Heroes of Might and Magic V
Back to the basics
Written by TM from WICHITA

I've played many incarnations of this game. From the early days until now. If you were fond of the earlier versions this is a much better game than HOMM 4. I also feel like the stories are a more integrated part of the game now as well. Very well done.

2 Stars Given
Pros:
Great graffics. If you liked HOMM3, this is very similar. Changed names and base creatures to races.
Cons:
No custom maps as far as custom games. Crash problem MUST be fixed.
Overall, I would not purchase this product until they fixed the stability issues.15 of 17 people found this useful

Works perfectly fine on my 2006 (black) mac book

I've been a huge fan of the previous hero games, and this one beats them by far. When I first got the game, I only have 1 gig on memory, and it would run fine for 3-5 hrs, then it would get laggy. But once I upgraded to 2 gig memory, it runs perfectly fine. I've never had the game crash on me, even when I had 1 gig of memory. This is highly addicted once you get going, be aware.

Once You Download the Patch, This is an Awesome game!
Written by RS from Seven Hills

I have been a fan of Heroes of Might & Magic since Heroes II. This latest version is excellent after you download the patch.
Since this game is fairly mature I am disappointed the copy I just bought in July of 2008 does not have the latest most up-to-date version. I hate downloading patches! Patches are for Windows gamers! Grrr.44 of 47 people found this useful

Fun even though it crashes.

I really liked this game. I could play it for hours and hours and hours if it didn't crash so often. I noticed it works a lot better and lasts a lot longer on a MacBook Pro than on a MacBook, for some reason. Overall the game is difficult and I definitely lost way more rounds against the computer than I won. The graphics are cool and the animations are fun and the battle type is pretty spectacular if you up all the effects to max. I only ever had problems on it randomly crashing every once in a while, I just suggest playing it and saving often.

Great Game- how to fix the flaw!
Written by BS

Lots of people complain that this game crashes, erases their files, etc.... These are serious problems that Freeverse needs to deal with, especially if they release the sequels, and I hope they do.
However, I found a solution to the above problems with the current 1.51 version. All the crashes on my computer happened after 2 hours of play. The last 6 months I've been testing my theory. I have confirmed it. On my computer a new, but only mid range Mac, if I just save and quit after two hours I have no problems with files, crashing, or anything. Try it. You might play a little less, or a little slower, but hey, people say that's good for you. I've found that I savor the game more this way.59 of 85 people found this useful

No Major Problems But Not Flawless
Written by DB from GLASGOW
Apr 27, 2008
I'm currently running the MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz and I've had little to no problems with running this game. The graphics are great, the game play is addictive but little to no development in game play variety. For what Heroes is, I'd recommend it to others who like games such as Age of Empires or Command and Conquer.
The problems i have faced though are when you minimise the game to read emails or something else, it will either crash or the opposing teams will stop moving. It also randomly crashes if your processor gets too warm but you just turn your fan up on your computer to solve that problem.
All in all, Thumps up to this.39 of 69 people found this useful

In order to be playable you must download the update. Still occasionally problematic but probably worth it to people who enjoyed the previous versions.

Despite the bugs that are still being worked out, and hopefully will be fixed in patches, Heroes V remains a fantastic game. The graphics, the game play, and the storyline are all top notch. I am very happy with this game and wait expectantly for the expansions to arrive for Mac.

Yes its a return in many respects to HOMM III, but thats an all time great game, and this is a much better game than HOMM IV. Its beautiful, and plays without the crashes others describe on my intel imac. OSX 10.4.11. There are many downloadable scenarios on the web.

Not that kind of game....
Written by MM
Nov 23, 2007
I looked at this game for a long time, wondering if I would like it. The pictures on the back and in the open up cover, lead you to think it's a World of WarCraft style of game. This is what caught my attention.
I was sorely disappointed when I bought the game, and ran it to find it was a tactics based RPG.
Now, a lot of people I know love tactics games, but I personally find them slow and after 30 minutes of playing I have to do something else. If you are unsure of what tactics games are, imagine a giant grid, where you can only move and attack to the spaces adjacent to you. You spend half the battle moving around like a game of chess before you actually get to attack, which in the end is just a click of a button where all the actions take place on their own. You just tell the game what to do.
I am not saying this is a bad game, but I don't want others spending a chunk of their paycheck for what they thought was something else.18 of 53 people found this useful

Heroes of Might and Magic V
buggy buggy buggy disappointment
Written by NT from Denver
Nov 17, 2007
I bought this game shortly after buying my new Mac Pro to have a NEW game running on my lovely new Mac. HoMM is an awesome game, but this port of HoMM is a HUGE disappointment because it is more buggy than any game I have ever played on the Mac platform - 15 years. It is rare that I give a bad public review because I don't want bad programming to reflect on Macs in general or provide less incentive for new Mac games, but this really is NOT at all acceptable for a game to crash like this on the top desktop Mac with 5G of RAM. The 1.5 patch is only a band-aid. The game continues to be substandard. I don't recommend it to anyone but the very desperate - unless you know programming and can teach Freeverse how to fix the many many bugs. Now I know better - I will never buy another port when they are first released even though I'm sure that discourages future Mac games. But it's not worth it to choose from thousands of buggy games that you pay full price for. There are freeware and inexpensive shareware games available that are very stable, so I will support those developers.

Fun and Stable with 1.5 patch
Written by DG from Ladera Ranch

I recently purchased the game, I was a little reluctant because of the bad reviews but I'm glad I did now. It is a fun turn based strategy game. The game supports several different resolution settings and I have had no problems playing so far after several days of gameplay. Have yet to try online play but plan to do so soon. The campaigns are a little dry but the instant modes are fun.

Heroes of Might and Magic V
Worst Strategy Game Ever
Written by AB from BRONXVILLE
Nov 11, 2007
I'm really not sure how anyone could find this game remotely entertaining. Every action is a chore (even battles) none of the controls are intuitive, it runs slowly, and none of the progress you make in one level carries over to the next. You spend all this time developing and progressing your Heroes (the title of the game, for crying out loud) and none of that progress is recognized in the next mission. With only a handful of games out there available for Mac, how is it that such a terrible game made the cut? You can download free games off the internet that are much, much better. What's the return policy on this tripe?

IT MAKES ME MAD!

I love all the Heroes games and was extremely excited for five to come out. But when I played it and it gliched I was agrivated. So I download this patch that supposedly will help with files corrupting. I go to play a loaded game and the file was corrupted! I mean come on! Freeverse! How could you possibly mess up something so awesome as heroes!

Premature releases are now common
Written by WT from New Castle
Aug 21, 2007
This game has wonderful turn based strategy, excellent graphics and design. When Heroes IV came out it had terrible crashes, many bugs, and other problems. Eventually (it took about 16 months) the game was fully patched and ran great. There were no problems that I recall with Heroes III. Potentially awesome games are being released too soon perhaps to meet the payroll. There is no other game that can compare with this game in this genre.
One of the greatest strategy games that I have ever played is now available for MAC ! When this game is fully patched, I am sure it will be worth 5 stars.18 of 42 people found this useful

Not worth the money
Written by RH from Chatsworth

The game looks great and is actually fun when it works. However, Freeverse seem to have done a rather poor job of porting it. To make matters worse, it seems they have no desire or perhaps lack of talent in correcting the issues that currently plague it.

Five months and no patch
Written by JB from Atlantic Highlands
Jul 16, 2007
Don't even consider this great game until the idiots who run Freeverse, the company that attempted to port it to Mac (and brilliantly only for Intel machines), sends out a patch to fix the multitude of bugs and crashes.
I have been playing the game with all sorts of jury rigs for five months waiting for them to get a patch out.
Truly sad.
They have changed the layout and graphics of their website, but can't get a patch out to people who paid $50.00 for their product.
