this game is one of the best...if you play Civ its way better oh an people the reason you cant turn on the soldiers is because you have to click advanced controls on the mini map area then you can tell your soldiers anything incuding deffensive stance, Agressive stance, and you can send them into battle when YOU say so

Great game!! but... old!

This game is a classic! It's the best game on the world!!! But, now, there's the new version: Age of Empires III which haves better graphics!! Because the Age of empires II graphics are not so impressive... Anyway, it's a good game!! And, this pack doesn't ruine the game because we don't loose controls on units and all the stuff!!! Trust me, the expansion makes the game WAY better!! Think about the version III before buying this one.

Decent Game, Some Corners Cut
Written by GM from Southlake

This game is worth a look. I would be lying if I said it wasn't fun, but I find it has limitations that should have been seen to.
First, there is no 'attack move'. You are doomed to getting your groups to attack a particular unit, the units will not intelligently charge and pick their own targets. It is much easier to micromanage from that as needed than to pair off units for attacks. There was no excuse on this matter, Blizzard Entertainment's Starcraft had this feature back in 1999—two years earlier.
Second, fortifications can be frustrating to build. Between terrain elevations and the height of structures, it can be difficult to build defenses of much intricacy. Holes can hide from you for enemies to sneak through, frustrating defensive innovation. See Stronghold for a game that does a fine job of fortification-building.
For all this, AoE2 has its share of good points. It had the most advanced simulation of fortification building in its time looking to the Medieval era. It's still fun. Unit queuing and rally points are also a plus. The AI also has its moments (no other Ai I can think of in an RTS has units do hit-and-fade attacks), though its base-building methods are non-sensical.
So, if you're looking for another game to add or catch up on, this is it. There are other games out there that make a strong case for themselves though, so make sure there's not something else out there you'd rather have even more.48 of 96 people found this useful

This remains a great game. It has evolved over the years into one of the greatest strategy games of all times. Even with the emergence of AOE III this game is still a favorite amoung realtime online strategy gamers. Try this classic you won't be dissapointed.

Macsoft, you ruined it!
Written by SH from Park city

I was extremely disapointed to find that macsoft had integrated the conquerers expansion.
In the PC verson the conquerers expansion was seperate. With good reason it ruins half the game. sure you get some cool looking new military units but then The expansion eliminates the more sophisticated commands that the orginal had for the military units. for example you could tell some units to stand their ground some to defend or just have them set to kill any enemy they can see. this was great because then it was possible to strategize and actually control the units. With the expansion for some reason the only thing the military units know how to do is attack. that means they will chase a peasant that passes your home base right into the middle of the enemy camp where they are promptly shot down like the rabid dogs they are.
this puts this game on the same level as starcraft, it's still alright to play but their is really only one strategy, blitz or die. like I said it ruins half the game.96 of 193 people found this useful
