So much better than Adobe Acrobat

    Written by TL from Gallipolis

    Mar 24, 2008

I've got Adobe Acrobat, but there is no way that you would ever catch me using it to fill out forms.

Recently I've been using PDFPen to fill out PDF rebate forms (even ones which aren't setup as actual PDF "forms") by using the text field. I've made a 1 minute screencast that I'd link to here if Apple allowed links.

This is a powerful program with a lot of features, and the SmileOnMyMac folks are very responsive to tech-support questions.

    These reviewers are ridiculous...

Written by WB from Laguna Niguel

I almost didn't try this because of the reviews that the software "stamps" each page with a logo. Turns out that is only the demo version. When you buy it, no logos. This software is easy to use, flexible, and works well. It is a low-cost way of modifying PDFs - I use it all the time to modify documents before I send them on (hide customer info etc). This is a good value and a good piece of software.

PDF editing done right. As easy as it gets!

    Written by AE from Tukwila

    Jan 26, 2009

I've found PDFpen to be very intuitive and high quality software for editing and/or signing PDFs. I own a couple SmileOnMyMac products, without regrets. Any issues I've experienced, have been quickly resolved by RTFM or a quick browse through the FAQ's on their site...

I love the fact that PDFpen saves me time and money, by not having to print/scan/re-PDF before sending a document to someone. I don't own a fax machine(or care to), and PDFpen makes it easy to collaborate on Legal documents without the need for Adobe Acrobat; —which is bloated, spendy garbage, IMHO.

Be sure to watch the Hi-Quality screencasts on PDFpen on their site. (I wish several other commenters would have, before rating this awesome program)

p.s, Sure, the trial/eval version overlays a watermark, but it's expected, and nice to be able to evaluate a program thoroughly before buying. I wish all developers did business this way.
Also worth noting: Any communications I've had with SmileOnMyMac have been very prompt & courteous.

    Extremely Useful App

    Written by CE from Abbotsford

    Mar 25, 2008

I purchased PDFpen because it is not possible to type on business forms anymore. We do a lot of quoting by tender and it just wasn't looking professional to fill out the tender forms by hand. We tried using Photoshop Elements but for this purpose it was clunky and (worse) it was slow so we gave up.

When I tried PDFpen it was an instant hit-I can finally scan into one file (multi-page PDF) and then mark it up however I please without any post processing hassles (like combining a bunch of files)

I had one issue with PDFpen and emailed SmileOnMyMac hoping for a future update only to get a very speedy reply showing me where the feature already was in the version I had!

Since then I have found so many more ways to make use of this program to make my work easier that I use it every day. (iPhoto doesnt let you mark up photos but PDFpen does, it will open many more file types than just PDFs)

    I Requested Refund

    Written by DD from Dallas

    Dec 21, 2007

This IS unstable software. While editing a pdf file most of the tools for graphics did not work! When I found one tool partially working I was able to make a few changes until the program suddenly closed and a "bug notification" popped up. After redoing lost work, I began saving every change and, lo and behold, I am glad I did since the program closed twice more during simple processes.

No phone number for the company listed either, just their PO Box (I didnt research that far prior to buying). My bad. Deserves no stars!

I've read reviews here about PDFpen crashing and for what its worth my experience has been much better. I dont know what other things those people have loaded on their computers but on my MacBook Pro PDFpen has been very stable and reiable--in fact I use t a lot.

Software "stamped" my documents with no warning...

    Written by RN from RANDOLPH

    Feb 23, 2008

I used this software to rearrange some PDF documents and later discovered that it had stamped a "SmileOnMyMac" logo on every page of my documents. There does not appear to be any way to remove the stamp, and customer support is useless, as they have not yet responded to any of my emails. Fortunately, I was able to restore backup copies of my documents, otherwise they would have been destroyed by this software, as I would not want to use documents which have a large obtrusive color logo stamped on them...

Wish I could get my money back

    Written by KB from Anahola

All I want to do is merge PDF files together. Sounds like what PDF Pen is supposed to do, right? I opened two PDF files, copied 10 pages at a time from one and then pasted them into the other open PDF. After each 20 pages, I would do a save on the doc being pasted into. Of the 20 times I did this, the program crashed 6 times. To top it off, many of the pages I pasted in were corrupted in the process, so I had to do it over (and over, and over) again. What a terrible application. Anyone have a better one? I'd like to give it less that a star.

    Very Handy!

Written by JR from Flower Mound

    May 24, 2008

PDFpen is waaay friendlier than Adobe's bloatware. I use it all the time to handle PDF forms electronically. You can even write in your own signature (or anything else) to allow fully electronic handling of PDFs.

I have not had any problems with it crashing or behaving strangely, and I am running it in 10.4 on a PowerBookG4. PDFpen is easy to use and gets the job done nice and quick. I would recommend it.

As usual, way to go SmileOnMyMac!!

Solutions like this are why I bought an iMac

Written by NA from Higgins Lake

    Oct 28, 2007

PDFpen came to my rescue in the middle of a challenging job for a new client. I had no time to devote to steep learning curves--I just need something that would allow me to get the job done. After downloading, I was using PDFpen in minutes, assembling a complex document from multiple sources into a single pdf, inserting page numbers and hyperlinks, etc.

PDFpen easily exceeded my expectations by being extremely easy to use, and when I had a couple of questions, support staff responded right away with on-target answers. No canned, generic replies--they addressed my specific issues and gave me the help I needed--FAST. I would recommend PDFpen to anyone.

Fails on the most basic levels

    Written by HP from Glendale

    Aug 26, 2008

This program fails on the most basic levels, cannot open my .pdf files reliably (many cause the program to crash) and if I am able to open my files and edit them... I cannot reliably save my files. In addition to that, the interface is lacking and the program does not recognize all the functions of my Bamboo Pen Table (I can zoom out but not zoom in).

I'm a full time student and I want/need a program that will let me take notes on .pdf lecture slides; my classmates us Microsoft OneNote. I purchased SmileOnMyMac PDF Pen on the recommendation of an Apple employee using the 'Chat Now" feature on the Apple Store's website.

After extensive frustration and contact with PDF pen support, I am seeking a refund and will puchase Adobe Acrobate 9 Standard or Pro at the student pricing.

    Replaces my terrible handwriting!

Written by JK from San Francisco

    Nov 22, 2007

This application does exactly what I want it to, and inexpensively. Actually, it was better than inexpensive. I'm pretty sure that because I used PDF Pen to fill out my funding application for the 3rd year of my PhD studies, it was a more pleasant experience for the awards panel--my handwriting is atrocious. This year they awarded 2x as much as they did last year, and I also won another award that required filling out a pdf form--PDF Pen to the rescue again. My funding apps look spectacular, and and I really believe it helps. I'll never fill out another pdf form by hand again. It's incredibly easy to use, which means it saves me a lot of time, too. And, I get to keep the files on my computer, rather than having to photocopy them. Another bonus!

Most childish software I have ever seen.

    Written by CM from Clearwater

    Dec 12, 2009

When viewing a document the area of the screen is not large enough to view the entire document. The boxes are so small you can't see the text being entered. I really don't think this even approaches the Adobe reader and I am not a big fan of Adobe in any way. It would be easy to create a product better than this. To add insult to injury it cannot be returned. I will never buy another software product with first using a demo.

    Useless

    Written by LS from Chicago

Now I understand all negative reviews for this software.

Bough this software to rearange / edit some of pdf files and found useless. Whoever is wrote positive review(s) are or working with software company, or they are their friends. Or they are using software just to sign document, and fax back.
Software is fail in any way to be used.
1- Open PDF document is coming with striped vertical lines
2- To edit anything there is no way to know what are you doing ( Font wise)
3- Chrashes down when you try to save
4- Customer support doesent exsist ( No phone #, or phisical address) e-mail only
    5- e-mail questions never returned

So My conclusion is This software is or scam for $50.00 or undeveloped and released with thendency not to be supported.

    DONT VASTE YOUR MONEY.
