    Most Impressive!

The speakers are worth every penny! Crystal clear sound right out of the box. GarageBand, MP3s, never sounded better. I work in multimedia applications where I mix many types of sound effects and edit videos and I am happy to say I found the perfect speakers for the job. The volume control dial is smooth and accurate and I am VERY impressed with the 'soft tap' muting functionality. If you like it 'LOUD' every once in a while... these suckers definitely perform! (for you Warcraft players - there is no substitute) - Cheers

    Skilled but flawed

These are fine speakers, I'm an avid audiophile and have now dedicated my hi-fi separates to dealing with vinyl since my itunes sound so good and have great detail and depth. However placement can be a problem as a lot of detail comes from the central drive unit which also offers the deep, deep bass. This means that unless you have desk and are willing to have the large black box on full view a lot of the mid-range is lost meaning that you get a slight echo feel to your play back with lyrics or spoken word material becoming lost amidst guitars, drums or ambient movie playback. Other than that they're are a class apart, build quality is sound and only lacking a wireless remote.

I am one fanatic of Bose! I have the #2 earphones, I have the Bose Companion 5 Multimedia, I have the Ipod connected to a Bose dock. All of these are by far, one of the most incredible gifts I have had in music. Thank you to all of you in Bose who make this possible....

One Complaint but overall I am Satisfied

I have been using the Bose Companion 5 for 3 weeks now, Overall the sound is great, It is what you would expect from any Bose Audio System, it seems to make up the bright end loss that I would get from most other computer speakers and I do not find much EQ is required to get the desired effect. My only complaint is that the system does not work well if you have the USB Audio connection connected to a USB Hub, While connected to a 4 port hub, the audio would randomly mute, no sound output despite my Macbook Pro recognizing the Bose system in the system preferences. The only way to correct the problem was to power down the Bose or the Computer. It took me a week to realize that after plugging the Bose directly into the Macbook Pro's USB port the problem went away. So at least with my experience, this system eats up 1 USB Port and does not allow you to use a USB Hub.

    Heavenly Sound!

If you want professional & crystal clear sound, these are the only way to go. Bose couldn't make a better computer speaker system. I haven't one single problem with them. I use them for watching movies and listening to music. The sound quality makes you feel like you are in a Dolby Surround theater. I watched Terminator II on my mac and couldn't believe the sounds I heard. Puts you in a different environment. Anyone that has a complaint about them is either mistaking them from others or stupid!

    garage band issue

No sound in Garage Band because of these run 48 khz and the "band" output is 44khz.
To send a suggestion to Bose is time consuming because they ask everything from you,
sn, address, colour of your underpants...., no software update to get them on 44khz
output yet. But they are well worth the money, not because of the "bose" logo.

I was a little hesitant at first but taking a trip to an apple store to listen to these made up my mind. Yes these are very expensive but it is worth every penny. Just imagine sound that even a movie theater can't beat. Right out of the box they blow you away.

If you spend allot of time on your computer like I do, watching movies and listening to music, do you self a favor and get these you won't regret it.

Have my ears died and gone to Heaven?

I purchased these incredible, compact and crystal clear speakers for my dorm room in Duquesne University. As an audiophile I only want the best sound to come out of my 17'' MBP. They are worth every penny, $400 may seem a great deal of money to spend on computer speakers, but your Mac deserves the best!

    Bose have done it again!

I have always rated Bose systems but have never been able to afford their top of the line packages. Being a movie fan I require a crisp, clean and powerful sound and have been using a yamaha based amp and speakers for a while. As this was taking up a lot of room, I decied to find a replacement and this system provides exactly that. The usb port provides that realistic 5.1 sound which needs to be heard to be belived and the power can easily fill a room or even two. Having the line in and headphone socket on the control pod provide great access for your ipod and the sound is just as pure, with the volume control and quick touch mute button at arms length. Overall the sound from such a small, compact system is just amazing and Bose really do provide better sound through research. I recommend this to everyone with a computer and those with an IPOD or music player as you will not be disappointed.

Bose makes some of the most amazing equipment. I am in advertising and I need the BEST Stuff in the market. I lve my mac.. my games.. my music and Bose ofcourse. These sound great...even at full volume. Games play great on my PC (when i connect it to my PC)and my music is just amazing. Infact I've heard some instruments in my tracks that I haven't heard before. I just wish they would keep the base and treble knobs with the volume control. Pretty annoying that i have to keep going under my table to change it. I prefer changing it every now and then for all kinds of different music.

These speakers provide amazing sound for music and movies and I couldn't be happier with them. However, when I use them for a game (as advertised) the sound is distorted and full of static. Huge disappointment there.

    Still love them otherwise.

    Audiophiles

I see several posts from "Audiophiles." They comment on the price and the Bose name. They also complain about static, muddy base and lacking mids. One thing they fail to mention is that these speakers are very accurate. So accurate that they bring out all of the detail in the music, snaps, crackles, pops and all. If defects in the music recording are there, these speakers will pick them up. Sorry audiophiles - that's how it works. I experience the same phenomenon with my $1,500 reference monitors. When placed correctly in the listening area and when proper adjustments are made to EQ settings (namely don't use them), these speakers shine immensely. Try listening to Mannheim Steamroller's Fanfare Abblasen on these gems and you see what properly mixed music sounds like!

I've had the Companion 5 system for about a year, connected to a G5 iMac running both Tiger and, for the past month, Leopard.

Often the sound from these speakers simply stops. The only way to get it back is to re-boot the computer.

If you study the Apple Support Discussion Forums you'll see that I am not the only Companion 5 owner who has this problem. You'll also see that, to date, neither Bose nor Apple can offer an explanation or a solution.

So, bottom line, the Bose Companion 5 system looks very nice and, when it works, sounds OK (not amazing). But it is NOT dependable. Unless/until Bose acknowledges and fixes the problem, my recommendation is to look elsewhere.

    Not good for games

    • Written by from Albuquerque

28 of 38 people found this useful

Purchased these speakers based on the Bose name and being able to connect them to my new 24" iMac with a USB connection. Sound on movies and music was acceptable but for games the sound is a little garbled and voices can not be understood. Expected more form Bose, these speakers have been returned.
