I thought I knew HI-FI... Then I plugged in the USB, and then I discovered that I didn't knew anything about HI-fi at all!
But Companion 5 taught me what it sounds like.

The crystal-clear sound just caress your ears, and fills the room, livingroom or what ever, with the best sound I've ever heard.
It can't be described, it must be heard!
    worth every penny!

    Control Pod is a Pain!

The sound cannot be faulted but not much more that you would expect for the price. But having to permanently tap the control pod to turn on the sound is a pain. Yes its just a touch but if you use this system anywhere other than a desk top it is no fun.

At the very least there should be a function to allow you to extend the stay on time in the settings.

If you are planning to use this product anywhere other than your desk,,don't buy it.

    Small Footprint - Awesome Sound

Play your favorite tunes on this system and re-discover why they are your favorites. Musical detail presented each time I played an old favorite left me truly impressed with the sound quality of the Companion 5 system. Individual instruments and detail of sound recording tracks jump out at you while listening. Each time I played a song, I was left saying, "wow, I never heard that part of the song before". If your budget can handle the price of the Companion 5, then these are the speakers for you. System provides enough Bass for all except perhaps the "rattle your neighbors' windows crowd". Hook-up is straight forward, but be sure to disable all iTunes sound enhancement features.

Sound quality that envelops the room; sleek design; solid build quality with metal bases and high quality materials; thunderous bass (amount of bass is controlled via a knob at the back of the subwoofer); zero distortion; very easy setup; would have been nice if the satellite speaker stands were removable (for wall mounting, etc.); control pod made of graphite-colored metal with easy-to-use rotating volume knob and touch-sensitive top portion; looks good, sounds good-what more could you ask for?

    the don't work with MacPro

I got this speakers with great hopes, (I own 2 other sets hooked up to a Mac and PC). The USB model has a problem working with Snow Leopard. Sometimes the Speakers power has to be unplugged from the wall and reconnected before it starts working. I have seen no FIX from Bose or Apple on this. The Speakers are hooked up to my Mac Pro latest and greatest model, this computer has dual boot with Windows7 on the other end. The speakers work with no problems with Windows7. If you buy them know that you may have to unplug the power every now and then for them to work. The sound that they produce, is the best for a set of speakers of this kind.

When going to buy the companion 5 I thought it was really expensive because of the BOSE Brand name. When i bought them i realized that it is expensive because the quality exceeds that of any other computer speakers I have ever heard or purchased. They have worked out amazingly as I expected. The bass is really loud but there is no distortion and the same with the satellite speakers. You save money if you hook them up to your TV for great quality surround sound, it goes perfect with blueray movies.

Don't rely on some anti-Bose rant by an "audiophile" who doesn't own these.

These are substantially constructed, look good on my desktop (sub is hidden), and have excellent sound quality for what they were intended. I wouldn't put them in the same class as a $100K pair of Rockports, but then again I'm not an audiophile either.

When you consider the PC you are going to plug these into has a mass produced audio chip that would struggle to keep pace with a $200 home receiver, these USB speakers are a perfect match for computer based music, games, and movies. I wish they were about $100 less (hence 4 stars), but then again I wish my MACs were priced more in line with higher spec'd PC's.

Yes, these are Bose. Yes, people hate the mass marketing Bose relies on. Yes, they sound great and were plug and play on all 5 of my Intel Leopard 10.5.7 MACs (2 new minis, new MBP, 8 core Pro, 24" iMac, and a lowly white macbook). Yes, they are a little expensive. Yes, I would buy them again.

I just got these speakers and they work with mac os x 10.5.7 flawlessly. If you don't know how to setup these speakers --> go to Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup --> change "Properties For: blah blah" to "Properties For: Bose USB Audio". Also change "Default Output" and "Systen Output" to "Bose USB Audio". Then click on "Configure Speakers". Click on Multichannel and then choose "5.1 Surround". click apply. Viola!

Don't just use these for playing games. These deserve more than that. And many people don't know how to set it up right. Don't complain that they don't sound like what you heard at a store just because you don't know how to set it up properly.

I too am picky about sound quality. Already own a BOSE Product and sound is "good", so I read all of the reviews, did some good research. I bought the Companion 5 - set up was easy; follow the instructions; use a couple of helpful hints found in previous reviews about sound enhancer (uncheck) and you are great to go. Outstanding sound - really pleased - you will be too.

Owner of a 100K+ 2ch audio system.Audiophile+++. Bose is great at marketing, hardly ever delivering the goods. Not this time. Walking in to a Bose store in CA. I walked past the Companion 5 as they were playing a movie and I just stood there dumb struck. I have yet to hear under 2K imaging,a tonal palette so complete in the midrange with silky highs and some weight on the bottom. The sound seemed to wrap around my head like great headphones. What in the world is going on hear I thought! Oh there must be more then 1pr. of speakers directed above or behind me I thought. Nope, just a Companion 5 system. Herd them again at the Apple store, sounded like they did at the Bose store. SCORE, I bought them & they sound the same in my home. A GREAT COMPANION FOR MY MAC PRO. Rene

Sounds great, no remote volume control capable (via AirTunes Express)

    • Written by from Pardubice

I thought these speakers might be compatible with AirTunes Express remote volume control feature supported by iTunes, when I noticed that the speakers connect to the computer via USB. So: not only they don't support remote volume control, but you cannot connect them to AirTunes Express via USB. AirTunes Express doesn't support USB-connected speakers (at least with present firmware). The only way of connecting them with AirTunes Express is to use its auxiliary input with additional 3.5mm-3.5mm jack cable, however the sound quality is then very poor.
Otherwise, when connected via USB to the computer, these speakers sound great.

I bought 3 different sets of Bose speakers (MusicMonitor, Companion 3, Companion 5), took them home, and hooked each set up to my computer at home, one after the other. It was a lot of extra work but I wanted to make sure I had the best sound for my computer (I have a new iMac). The Companion 5 are without a doubt the best. If you watch movies, listen to music, etc. then these speakers are a must...

Like other reviewers, I felt the digital processing of the Bose speakers minimized the vocals and certain instrument tracks when playing music through iTunes. It was almost as if the vocals were recorded from the bottom of a well, completely lost in the mix. The set-up instructions for the Mac were very specific when it came to the adjustments to be made in System Preferences-Sound, and using the Audio MIDI Setup in Utilities. They also said to turn off any sound effects processing, but were not specific in what this meant. Another reviewer here turned-on a lightbulb when he mentioned some audio controls inside iTunes. Go to iTunes-Preferences-Playback, and deselect the Sound Enhancer. Problem solved. This speaker system now performs beautifully.

    Great Speakers

I bought these speakers a year ago when I bought the iPod Touch. They are amazing. The sound quality is what you would expect from Bose. I own their ear buds and the companion 5, and I must say that work has never been better. The feeling you get from the sub when the volume is cranked up load is amazing. No matter how loud or low, the sound quality never changes. One of the added benefits is the sound pod. When you need to mute the volume to take a call or what not, you can without having to fumble through the iPod or even the computer. I'm not surprised because I have been a Bose fan for years! The speakers are expensive, but if you want a true 5.1 surround sound while watching a movie or even listening to music, these are a perfect buy. If you don't want to drop $400 on speakers, the companion 3 is another great buy.
