    Disappointing mid-range and vocals

Have to rock the boat. The glowing reports seen here and elsewhere for this Companion 5 "surround sound" system could easily woo an innocent into believing this is a system worthy of the hefty price tag. Not so.
True it provides excellent bass, treble and other ranges with remarkable clarity. It has that "feel good" sound - you know what I mean - when you are almost swept away by the grandeur of the sound.
BUT. The vocals sound distant, far away even. And then the reverb slider gets stuck on overload. A range of different music from classical, to pop, to jazz, to electronic, to blues, to... just about any genre in my very eclectic collection yields the same result. It's like the singers are inside a glass case. Combine that with the reverb issue and the result is that you can't hear what is being sung, like a badly mixed demo tape. Hey, I like reverb too, just not all the time, and not always at the maximum setting.
Oh if you like instrumentals only, you might be happy... hmmm... well, no, not even then. Sorry. You're just missing too much from the mid-range, even with a plethora of equalizer options. I also tried using an audio cable instead of the USB connection. Same result.
Incidentally, it was the same on a different unit in the audio store when I tested the equipment. I was willing to give the sales guy a break and accept that it could have been someone fiddling with the cables behind the counter. Idiot me.
Personally, I think Bose have done an excellent marketing job on this system but the surround sound they laud is but a euphemism for "crank up the reverb and squidge the singer into a wee glass case". After nearly two weeks of trying to make this system work in a variety of locations around my house and with different inputs and devices attached, enough is enough. Be a companion, Bose - surround me with my money back please.

These speakers are over hyped. I bought these speakers, listen to it for an less than an hour, and return them right away. If you want some really good speakers , get some KRKs, Audioengine or some M-audio. For the same price or less, any of those speaker brand that I just mention sounds a lot better than Bose. Stop getting ripped off by Bose everybody!!!

Tinny Sound, Lack of mids and lows

Bose has great marketing, but an absolutely horrible product, Im coming from years of KRK's, Bowers and Wilkins and as sound goes Bose is terrible, I bought these, listened to them for 5 minutes, put them back in the box and returned them, Horrible. All the subwoofer does is give mid's.

    Mountain lion

Problem on a newly bought Mac mini with mountain lion. I can see the Bose in the System Pref and in the Midi Audio app (utilities). The user guide shows screenshots with older OS. I tried to do the same but no sound is coming out. Contacted Bose support but they say I should speak with apple care, in other words, they say it is an apple problem. The Bose tech guy has no clue on mountain lion and said he works on windows environment only and cannot check, strange answer!

I like the product, specially the control pod (which could be digital instead of resistive but I didn't mention that)

The biggest mistake is the USB connection. Because it doesn't speak very well with Snow Leopard it just ruins everything. Patched bare cables would do a far better job.

I can find a lot of people with the same problem on the internet, but not a solution from Apple or Bose.

Just buy if not using it with an Apple product.

I wish I had not bought those

There are products that you eventually wish that you had never bought in the first place. This is sadly one of those as far as I am concerned. I should have researched it more.

You may like the product initially if you "upgrade" from something even worse (like I did), but this product is definitely not worth what I paid for it from my perspective.

    Here are my comments:

-The build quality is bad and the system fragile. I had (and still have) several build quality issues with it. The first puck was not working. The connections on the back are so cheap that I get strange feedback-like sounds when the connections are physically stressed for any reason (moving the wires near the connection or moving the "acoustimass" unit for example). The bass control is a very cheap and fragile plastic wheel.

-There are almost no software controls. The only controls available are in the Midi Setup utility: a volume control for the whole unit, not even for each channel, and very limited speaker configuration options (stereo and 5.1 and channel reassignment) but that's it. The physical controls are limited to on-off-mute, bass and volume. The bass control is very inconveniently located at the back of the "acoustimass" module, meaning you have to crawl under your desk on all fours to reach it.

-The connection is USB, meaning that you will run into compatibility problems. The sound for some games does not work or is severely distorded.

-The 5.1 effect is not very good.

-The output is limited to 48khz, 16 bit. Forget about playing higher quality files. I could not believe that when I saw it, it is not mentioned anywhere that I could find in the documentation.

-The connections for the satellites are proprietary. You can't easily use the satellites for something else (not that you would want to, see below) or connect other speakers to the system.

-And last but not least I find the speakers more and more unpleasant to listen to as time goes by and the sound quality is just not there. I got some high quality speakers for my HT, and the difference is just incredible (the price is admittedly not the same). A little research on the internet reveals that there are serious issues with other Bose speakers (not these specific ones, I could not find specific measurements for them, Bose does not appear to publish this data). Research also reveals that Bose makes products which are quite controversial to say the least.

Do yourself a favour and consider something else like Focal or M-Audio for example or use your optical connection to feed a separate receiver/amplifier using encoded digital audio. You will get much better quality in that manner with the bonus of added flexibility (you can upgrade the amp and speakers separately, etc.).

    the don't work with MacPro

I got this speakers with great hopes, (I own 2 other sets hooked up to a Mac and PC). The USB model has a problem working with Snow Leopard. Sometimes the Speakers power has to be unplugged from the wall and reconnected before it starts working. I have seen no FIX from Bose or Apple on this. The Speakers are hooked up to my Mac Pro latest and greatest model, this computer has dual boot with Windows7 on the other end. The speakers work with no problems with Windows7. If you buy them know that you may have to unplug the power every now and then for them to work. The sound that they produce, is the best for a set of speakers of this kind.

So, the Creatures I bought last year never did work. Period. And I didn't return them in time for a refund. Read your reviews and spent more money. Yeah, good volume, clear sound, but what about the static? Glen Gould sounds MUCH better on a Walkman with Radioshack speakers than these. I am disappointed and weary of the hype that everything seems to need to even show up on the cultural radar. These are being returned. On time. Listening to static is exhausting.
