    Not a great speaker

    • Written by from Utopia

Nice rich, but processed sound. Quality looking item. Nicely finished. But, not very natural sounding when the supposed processor cant keep up with any drastic sound change. i.e. dramatic classical pieces or any drastic change in volume during any play back at volume. I heard the speaker trying to keep up with louder passages. Almost like it was underpowered. It kept giving a breathing effect. In the end I just could not bring myself to keep these on the same desk as my 27" iMac. Not in the same class. I just kept expecting more from them, that they could not deliver. Overall nice equipment that shows well in a room but dont expect worldclass performance. Just not up to task. Unfortunately the comment I read a while ago applies still, "BOSE is the McDonalds of the speaker industry". They are more of a marketing compay than a good speaker company.

Great sound when in use, too much hiss when not

    • Written by from Scarborough

I own two sets of these speakers. A bit over a year old, and they still sound great. When you plug in apple ear buds, it's amazing how much bass they can generate. Some really good sound drivers in these speakers.

However, they pick up a lot of noise, and hiss when not in use. The noise they pick up (hissing/clicking) when you try to hook them up to a iPhone dock are terrible when you are in a small quiet room. Forget about hooking up a dock and computer, as the dock generates too much noise. There is no power button either, so you can't even turn them off when not in use.

Over all, I'm torn with my review. Such great sounding when being used. But they have so much hiss/noise when not being used that I have unplugged them and switched back to computer speakers for my iMac. I probably will plug them back in soon enough though.

Mid Bass is boomy and lacks midrange for vocals

    • Written by from lake tapps

I had high hopes for these speakers and with the ninety dollar price tag I expected better for the Bose name. I am comparing these to the Logitech X 530 5.1 and the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. The low end bass is non existent since there is no sub which I expected, but the mid-bass is very boomy like the effect when you turn the bass up on the cheap Logitech speakers. All things aside I just cannot get over the fact that mid range for vocals is non-existent and creates a hollow sound. Over all I give these a lower than average score that would match a $30 Logitech pair of satellites. Make sure you listen to these in store before you waste $90.

I expected excellent quality with amazing sound, given the brand name. I am sorely disappointed and will be returning these speakers.

    NOT worth paying your $99+tax

    • Written by from 공주시

Seriously, they don't worth $99 to my ears. I used to be a huge fan of bose, so I own lifestyle series II(OK for movies but not good for music, used only for occasional computer games), sounddock(sitting in a closet, replaced with Fatman iTube Carbon II & Modaunt-Short Mezzo2), mediamate(used in the kitchen, one of the best bose has ever created), IE earphones(acceptable sound but falling apart easily), and this pair(placed in my office but I'm afraid to using them due to horrible sounds). Now, I have compared bose products to others in similar price range and I came to a conclusion that BOSE doesn't cut it, except headphones. Well, I didn't understand why people criticised bose before, but I finally realized they were overated and overpriced for such terrible sound quality. Anyway, these speakers don't produce clear sounds at all. I don't expect sounds like B&W 800D speaker quality. They don't even match the 10year old Mediamate designed for computer or notebook. Before buying these, please, test them in a quite environment running your favorite music and compare with its competitors(if they have any in the same class).

    NOT WORTH THE MONEY

    • Written by from Rancho Palos Verdes

you pay $100 for speakers that only have volume control. no bass control no subwoofer. in other words don't buy if u want speakers with bass of any kind, buy a logitech system instead.

Doesn't live up to its name.

These speakers are way too overpriced. I bought them under the Bose reputation of high quality sound systems, but was greatly disappointed.

    Unreliable Connections

    • Written by from HERMOSA BEACH

While re-organizing my apartment, I had to move my Mac and its accessories a few times. After every move, the question was "will the Bose speakers fire up or won't they?" I never could isolate which connection was so sensitive: you just had to plug, unplug and re-plug until they worked. Anyway, after about the 4th move they solved the problem by going dead for good. After just eight months. The sound was good - while they lasted.

    Great sounds

    • Written by from Rochester

Great sound quality considering its price.
But mine broke in less than one year. Although I have never given any damanges to it. I moved my place once, but never allowed any damages to it (sadly, Bose charges $47 flat charges for any repairs to this product).
So if you wanna buy this, consider buying it with a warranty, just you would when buying any Bose product.
I have two friends who uses Bose speakers (one uses this one, the other uses companion 5). Both had some troubles (functionality issues, though I'm not entirely sure what they were) with their speakers.

    Low quality

    • Written by from Portland

Completely unshielded so if you have a cell phone and it gets within 20 feet of your speakers you get the most annoying series of beeps and burps. Also, the headphones jack sounds completely different from plugging into the headphone jack of the computer (even completely different from plugging into the speakers jack). It sounds like listening to music with cotton balls in your ears. Why put a jack there at all if it is going to sound terrible.

The actual output of the speaker (if your cell phone is far away), is a little bass heavy, but otherwise acceptable.

Great speakers.... unless you have an iPhone

    • Written by from San Diego

These speakers sound really nice, until your iPhone lapses into edge mode and then beeps, clicks and that digital noise that drives you crazy gets going. I even moved the phone across my office (15+ feet) and there was no relief from the digital noise.

My office is in an area where my iphone seems to hop from 3G to edge and back again regularly.

These speakers seem to have no shielding whatsoever. If you don't have an iPhone, I would say they are a great deal for the price. If you have an original iPhone or a 3g that has to work in edge sometimes, I would suggest avoiding these speakers.

Not Good if Your a sound junkie!!

    • Written by from las vegas

I have the imac and these speakers were not what I expected from Bose. They are okay but there is feedback and it distorts as it gets louder. I've messed with the eq dozens of times till I was able to find a happy medium. I will have to upgrade in the coming months and will be handing these down to my niece who thinks "they're great" - but for me a person who formally worked in music these are not good enough!

    unacceptably processed sound

    • Written by from Friday Harbor

I was looking for a better than average quality speaker system without spending too much. The sound is rich with fairly crisp highs and full lows, but my thirty dollar speakers from which I was upgrading actually sound clearer.

I think the problem is the signal processing that Bose brags about. It sounds like the volume and clarity of each instrument is coming and going in waves, as another comment mentioned. The speakers appear to be attempting to dynamically alter the sound, and they are failing miserably. I am honestly extremely surprised that this was not mentioned in more reviews.

    Bottom line:
As the swarm of positive reviews indicates, these speakers might be fine for an average or less discerning listener, but the sound processing is so distracting I am returning mine.
If you think that a processor in a hundred dollar speaker can make better decisions about EQ balance than artists and sound engineers in their own studio, by all means let these speakers alter your sound. If you care about accurate, clear sound, please heed this warning!

    Not made for serious listening

    • Written by from Friendship

It's probably worth noting that I bought these speakers because I already own a pair of Bose 301 bookshelf speakers that I enjoy in my living room.

The problem with these small speakers is what Bose calls their "TrueSpace® Stereo Signal Processing Circuitry." The speakers "process" the sound to give it a larger-than-life quality by accenting the highs and the lows, leaving the mid-range completely lacking. On acoustic rock songs, the speakers overemphasize sibilants in the vocal lines giving it an almost percussive feeling. Similarly, guitar strums also have an unnatural edge to them leaving, devoid of any warmth.

The real breaking point came when I gave these speakers a go with some complex modern classical music. The processing unit couldn't decide what to accentuate given the huge range of color in a symphony orchestra. It left the music sounding like it was on steroids--loud bass thumps would be over-articulated by the Bose processing unit and bleed into soft passages before it could readjust. Or it would accent high percussive sounds and respond late to surprise bass entrances. The processing unit could not handle huge and sudden shifts in dynamics and color.

Needless to say, I'm going to return these speakers and look for something "simpler" and less "processed."

    I Bose quality sound...

    • Written by from Warroad

They work, They sound OK just OK. I bought another brand that was cheaper and it came with a sub woofer also. Now that one sounds great. These sound just like the little round power speakers that came with the IMAC G4. At least those had a cool look to them.

They work but I expected better. I would not but them again.
