Not Good if Your a sound junkie!!

I have the imac and these speakers were not what I expected from Bose. They are okay but there is feedback and it distorts as it gets louder. I've messed with the eq dozens of times till I was able to find a happy medium. I will have to upgrade in the coming months and will be handing these down to my niece who thinks "they're great" - but for me a person who formally worked in music these are not good enough!

I haven't actually owned that many speakers in the 14 years of my life, but let me tell you these are the best speakers you will EVER own, unless you will ever own the Companion 3 or 5 speakers.

I saw these on the apple store one day when I was going to buy those tiny little iHome speakers, because the reviews said that they were loud and very small. So I was at the Tacoma mall in WA and I remembered that they had a BOSE store there and was going to take a look at what they got , and I compared these with some of their extra tiny $399.95 speakers and compared them right next to each other, I noticed that they were exactly the same quality and thought about buying the tiny ones, but i could save $300 and bought these. I tried them out with my new Casio XJ S-10 and they worked perfectly. I turned them about 80% and went to the other end of my house and I could hear them perfectly. by the way my house is 5500 Sq. They also seem to have a base built in and I can hear base on my songs really good. ft. and i was very far away, and it sounded like I was 10ft away from them. All I really need to say forget the 400 dollar speakers, buy these.

These are the best little speakers I've ever found - and the kind of quality sound you could only expect from Bose.

I purchased and subsequently returned several sets of external speakers for my laptop a few years ago before finally deciding to make the larger investment (for me anyway...) of getting these speakers.

I was SO surprisingly impressed by their quality that I have since bought two more sets - one for my television, and then later, a third set to use at my office.

While a little more expensive than many other laptop sound options, they are absolutely worth it! Many times over!

I tested many many computer speakers before buying these. I am VERY HAPPY with my choice. They sound awesome, better than several that were much more expensive, they take up very little space, and match my iMac perfectly. But the main thing is the sound. I am hearing things in my music I haven't heard on any other speakers.

    I highly recommend them.

I was very pleased with the clarity and quality of the sound coming out of these speakers until my left one started making a rattling noise. Never turning the volume up a bit over half, I'm disappointed with this 2.0 system as it couldn't even handle medium volumes very well.

Don't get me wrong, these speakers sound fantastic, but if you want a pair that will last I recommend the companion 3 series. With the bass the stress on the speakers is reduced and they probably wont blow or rattle like mine at medium volumes.

There is nothing more annoying than buying a good speaker for quality and constantly hearing a rattle every time you play a song.

For anyone who cares, I'm going to replace them with the M-audio Studiophile set.

This is a superb product. In addition to the flawless sound quality, you get 2 RCA connectors - I connect my iPod stand and an Airport Express to the speakers.

I've owned the speakers for about 1 year without any problems.

My Brother got these for college. For being 2.0 channel speakers you can hear them all around his floor and outside. if you ask me that is awesome. Next best thing to B&O. If you are looking for inexpensive speakers these are the ones to get. Only thing that kinda bugged me with them was a minor feedback coming from them if you have them cranked up with nothing playing.

    Paperweights - Absolute Junk.

Bought these speakers for my new Macbook Pro, and the minute you plug the into the macbook there is feedback. It is almost like the shielding on something is off. Reacts to the metal of the new Macbook Pro. If you plug the mag-safe adapter INTO the Macbook Pro, it just multiplies the feedback. I Have tried jiggling the cord, setting them up in various settings and still, not luck. Perhaps on a Mac Pro or the like they work wonderful, but no such luck.
I would return these if my roommate hadn't destroyed the box. Now I have two plastic paperweights. I am SOO disappointed in these.

no power on/off button and iPhone buzz

    • Written by from Seattle

26 of 32 people found this useful

These speakers are always on--they have no power on/off button. If you have an iPhone near them (near meaning in the same room) they will pick up what's called the "GSM buzz" if you're running on the Edge network. This problem doesn't happen with iPhone's running on the 3G network.

I keep my iPhone 3G on Edge because of dropped call problems and battery life, but doing so causes the nearby speaker buzz. In a perfect world, I'd just turn off the speakers when not in use, but that's not possible.

Otherwise, the speakers sound good, not excellent. I'd echo much of what else has been said here in other reviews. To get the most out of the speakers I've had to spend more time adjusting the equalizer than with a previous set of JBL computer speakers. Bass can be too low and highs can be too high, but the quality overall is good. But perhaps not $99 good.

    unacceptably processed sound

    • Written by from Friday Harbor

I was looking for a better than average quality speaker system without spending too much. The sound is rich with fairly crisp highs and full lows, but my thirty dollar speakers from which I was upgrading actually sound clearer.

I think the problem is the signal processing that Bose brags about. It sounds like the volume and clarity of each instrument is coming and going in waves, as another comment mentioned. The speakers appear to be attempting to dynamically alter the sound, and they are failing miserably. I am honestly extremely surprised that this was not mentioned in more reviews.

    Bottom line:
As the swarm of positive reviews indicates, these speakers might be fine for an average or less discerning listener, but the sound processing is so distracting I am returning mine.
If you think that a processor in a hundred dollar speaker can make better decisions about EQ balance than artists and sound engineers in their own studio, by all means let these speakers alter your sound. If you care about accurate, clear sound, please heed this warning!

I have a set of these and people come over and can not believe that the full bodied sound is coming from these two little Bose speakers.

I bought them for my ipod at first, but I ended up using them with my MacBook.

One word of caution... They are Room & Placement dependent. If you set them up and they sound kinda "weak", then move them around to try and find optimal spot.

These also work EXCELLENT for the AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes!

Best 2.0 System for Multimedia Listening

    • Written by from Crystal Lake

First off, these are not Home Theater speakers. Some other reviewers have taken to comparing these to home tower speakers and that's just not what these are. If you're looking for crisp all-range sound to blast your post-modern classical on the Riviera try Vienna or or some other speaker. These speakers are fantastic. Hands down. I live in a dorm and people are always constantly amazed that there's no subwoofer. The bass on these things are more powerful than some setups with subs I've seen. All ranges are acceptable for the higher-end listener and fantastic for the normal user. I have mine hooked up via airport express and there's no noticeable signal degradation. I also keep a USB hub with two ipods, a camera, and my iPhone plugged in by them and no annoying background hiss from interference. Hands down the best speakers I've purchased for music listening use. An added plus: no external lights on the speakers make for a clean listening experience with aesthetically pleasing design. If you're considering them, get them, you won't be disappointed in any sense of the word.

Do not get these if you have an iphone and keep it near your Mac. The GSM phones will make these speakers BUZZZZZZZZZZZ. Not sure what speaker don't, but don't waste your money if you have this type of set up because now you will have BOSE enhanced buzz.

    Not made for serious listening

It's probably worth noting that I bought these speakers because I already own a pair of Bose 301 bookshelf speakers that I enjoy in my living room.

The problem with these small speakers is what Bose calls their "TrueSpace® Stereo Signal Processing Circuitry." The speakers "process" the sound to give it a larger-than-life quality by accenting the highs and the lows, leaving the mid-range completely lacking. On acoustic rock songs, the speakers overemphasize sibilants in the vocal lines giving it an almost percussive feeling. Similarly, guitar strums also have an unnatural edge to them leaving, devoid of any warmth.

The real breaking point came when I gave these speakers a go with some complex modern classical music. The processing unit couldn't decide what to accentuate given the huge range of color in a symphony orchestra. It left the music sounding like it was on steroids--loud bass thumps would be over-articulated by the Bose processing unit and bleed into soft passages before it could readjust. Or it would accent high percussive sounds and respond late to surprise bass entrances. The processing unit could not handle huge and sudden shifts in dynamics and color.

Needless to say, I'm going to return these speakers and look for something "simpler" and less "processed."
