Sid Meier's Civilization IV
Civilization IV: Vanilla
Written by LH from San Francisco

Don't get me wrong. It's a great game, but it lacks multiplayer support as there is no huge Mac fan base for this game. The replayability is low due to the lack of multiplayer in Game Ranger. Someone should really make a hybrid support for Game Spy for cross-platform multiplayer like Blizzard's Battle.net that is my opinion. Three Stars for a great game and lack of multiplayer support from Aspyr.

Hardware, compatibility issues, even under Windows
Written by SC from Goshen

I'm a huge fan of the game. New aluminum Macbook 2.4GHZ 4Gb ram.
Latest Patch with Warlords. Ran under Windows. Just like the other comments after 10 minutes the computer overheats and freezes. Restart, same issue.
Tech support recommends downsizing the graphics settings in the game (low-mid)

Ehhh..it's ok.

O.K. I bought this game, always having thought it was the exact same as age of empires, just a different version. This one I didn't care for so much as I didn't realize it was turn based before I bought it. I didn't do enough research. If you're not familiar with turn based, it's nothing like Age of Empires. Your units can only move a few tiles at a time, and then you have to end your turn and let the other civilization make a move. Luckily the Apple store is allowing me to do an exchange, which I will be exchanging for Age of Empires III. The apple store has great customer service.

Civilization IV does not work on MacBook Air
Written by WW from New York
Mar 8, 2009
Aspyr's copy protection/DRM requires you to insert the DVD before you can run the game. Unfortunately, a MacBook Air doesn't have one. Using the Remote Disk feature of the Air does not satisfy Civilization IV and so this game is useless.
Aspyr--you have lost yet another customer. I want to buy your game, but now I am angry and annoyed. Not a good way to build a business.75 of 118 people found this useful

I want my money back
Written by RA from San Diego
Feb 9, 2009
I've been playing the Civilization series since the first back on a dos box. I love this game, and hence shelled out $80 for the game ($50) and the expansion ($30) and feel like i've been taken advantage of. I have a brand new MacBook Pro Dual Core 4gb ram. The game will run fine in the early years, but begins to crash every 10min or less in the later years around 1800. awesome. Hey Sid - Thanks for selling me 1/2 a game. After the flop that I think Civilization Revolutions was, i'll seriously stop and think twice about spending my money on a Sid Meyer game again. So sad...

Does not work on macpro, resource hog on MBP
Written by MG from Portland
Jan 26, 2009
This game cannot run on a year old mac pro - it always crashes, perhaps because it does not recognize the ATI video card. It runs on a similar vintage MBP laptop, but consumes enormous resources, making the laptop almost too hot to hold, and taking longer and longer to calculate moves and draw the world. The technical difficulties are so severe that they make the game unpleasant even if it does run.

Great game, but not perfect.
Written by RZ from San Jose

I really love Civ games. I played Civ III a lot, and I love that game so much. But Civ IV made me so disappointed because it didn't improve a lot, Just a little bit graphic improvement and this game takes less time now. I want more units combinations and more strategies. And that will be much better if they make the relationship between countries more complex. This is a good game to play, and I will both III and IV.

Very good but with some definite problems
Written by TL
Oct 20, 2008
I have been a Civ fan from the beginning. This version is great when it works. The biggest problem started when I uploaded the patch. It is possible a security update from Apple caused this to take place too. The game crashes about every 10 turns you take. I read of another problem with black patches later on in the game. This is true. I found by just simply zooming out and then zooming in, it will permanently solve this little problem. The crashing is just unbearable though. I am calling the company today. I have to say, that even though the game crashes, I still play it. I just swear a lot when it happens!

improved graphics, better unit's and technology and civs. did i mention the outstanding graphics? to every one who hates this game, you don't belong to a world of gamers. the only flaw is it crash's sometimes, but there is an auto save which saves your progress. six stars if i could!

one flaw - addiction
Written by GO from Rishon Le Ziyyon

it takes some time to move from CIV III to this one, and get used to its concept, but once you're there, the only flaw about this game is that its addictive.
its a game that never ends, every game differs from the others.
Highly recommended for strategy and politics gamers.37 of 39 people found this useful

Great Game - 1 Bug - Black Patches
Written by JR from Dallas
Sep 6, 2008
I haven't purchased a game since the 90's, but being a recent Mac user and having a love for strategy type table top games, I thought I'd give this one a try and I love it (even when the game beats me).
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I've encountered a bug where cities and other areas display as black patches after an extended play time (around 5 hrs.). Since this was mentioned in some other reviews, I would have thought they would have come up with a fix by now. When it does this, I save the game and reload it and all works fine again.
No other problems, no crashes occur. Running on a MacBook Pro 4.1, 2.6 GHz, 4GB Mem., GeForce 8600M GT Video25 of 28 people found this useful

Civ 4 Rules!
Written by AJ from Washington

I had CivNet and it was extremely fun but Civ4 blows it away! The graphics are amazing and it runs at blazing speeds on my iMac 2.4 Intel! I definitely would recommend this product for new Civilization players or as an upgrade from an older version.

Very Fun Game -- Runs Great.
Written by DP from Tucson

Runs very well on my 2.16 MacBook Pro w/the small graphics card and 2 Gigs RAM. I have all the Graphics Settings on high and the screen resolution set to 1440 x 900--the highest setting. This game is the very fun to play. Very much worth the price since there are tons of different options on game play. It will provide hours and hours of fun!

because my graphics card was not listed on the back and I didn't know if it would pick it up or not. I have the 3.06 Ghz iMac with 4GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive. Well, it runs perfect and the game is great so I definitely recommend buying this game.

DOES ANYTHING FROM ASPYR EVER WORK?
Written by AD from Norfolk
Jun 9, 2008
Okay, call me stupid. Or, call me faithful. I have now purchased three (3) Aspyr ports (Indiana Jones, SW Battlefront and CIV IV) and neither of them worked without SIGNIFICANT time wasted searching around on the website for patches, or some of them didn't work at all. Why does Apple continue to support this junk (I have owned apples for two years)? It is a good thing that I use this MBP for video editing. At least it does this well. Stay away from Aspyr.
