    Stands the test of time

    Written by DS from Raleigh

I recently loaded Quake 4 back onto my Mac and played through it. It still delivered the visceral thrills that it had back in 2006. It isn't the hardest game and the enemy AI is lacking compared to recent shooters but for a solid, atmospheric FPS it still has teeth. I hope id delivers on Rage. I need a new FPS for my mac.

    Great Game

This is a great FPS. It plays great on my MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz. Even more surprising, it plays well on my new Mac Mini 2.0GHz at low graphics settings. Since the mini is hooked up to my 50" Plasma, makes for quite a gaming platform.

Fantastic game, runs great on older CD Macs!

I was a bit nervous at first buying this game, because I have an older 17" MBP (Core Duo) but with 2 gigs of ram and XI1600, the game runs smoothly on even higher settings. It has a great single player storyline that has a good replay value (i'm currently playing it again for the third time) and the multi-player is basically Q3 with better graphics. Had some sound issues at first, but repairing permissions and updating the software solved that fast. Highly recommended for FPS fans

    Want a challenge?

Written by JS from New Haven

Quake 4 runs on the Doom 3 engine, so the game is a looker of course. It takes a different path ditching closed environments for tons of open levels. With great weapon staples from the series, and some REALLY challenging segments, Quake 4 will challenge your trigger finger, and occasionally your patience. This and some minor slowdown on my machine hold this from absolute greatness.

Quake 4 on my duel 1.8 G5 into my Sony HD TV via DVI with Radeon 800xt !!!!

    Written by LM from Piermont

This game runs great on my duel 1.8 g5 tower and I have it going into my Sony 50 inch HD TV using my Radeon 800xt video card dvi out into the dvi of the tv. The game with the latest update and Tiger provides HD tv resolutions of 1080i and 720p. Playing online has never been easier even with a wireless setup via airport which I could never get to work with unreal tournament. The surround sound has yet to work for me but I have fake surround via the digital audio out of the mac into my surround amp. It is the best fragging experience yet!!!!!!!!

Quake 4 rocks on my Macbook Pro!

Initially I was hesitant to buy Quake 4 for my Macbook Pro not knowing how well the dual-core processors would perform. However after installing the patch program I found the gameplay experience to be awesome! There is a bit of a lag while your progress is being saved, but other than that, I would highly recommend Quake 4 to avid and beginner mac gamers alike. Happy fragging!

    Great Single Player, Lacking Multiplayer

    Written by NK from Seattle

The graphics on this game are awesome. Upgrading from a 1Ghz G4 I had no idea how good games have become. The single player is immersive and fun. Although it can be dark at times, it is done well, not trying to scare you like in Doom 3. The voice actors are great and the animation is supurb.
My only problem is with the multiplayer. It is very much in the style of quake 3 or unreal tournement. If you like those games this will not disapoint. However, based on the single player gameplay I was assuming there would be more of a team based large scale realistic battle. Instead it is a very fast pased shooter with short life spans and no vehicles. An open map with the hover tanks and walkers from the single player campaign would have been very cool.

Great game minus a few flaws

    Written by MP from Dahlgren

    Jul 4, 2006

The game is great, graphics are awesome, game play and store are great as well. The only problem i have is on my 17" 2.16ghz 2G ram Macbook Pro, it crashes at least once a level to where i have to restart the computer. I don't know why it does this but its quite irritating sometimes, other than the crashes the game runs great on the highest graphics settings!

    Great FPS game!!

Written by AT from Los Angeles

Really fun game, even though the action can tend to get a bit repetitive. The SP campaign was fun... the multi-palyer, well, it could be better, if we could be able to play against people on PCs, lets face it, there are a lot more PC gamers than on the Mac =(, and thats too bad since MP seems like it could lots of fun.. just can't find people to play with really. The graphics are beautiful, once you get the SMP patch you'll see a large improvement in perfomance if you have a dual processor. The sound is good, but the music is kinda non-existant, but the voice-acting is superb. This is a must have for any Mac gamer, so buy it!

It's simple really... another great ride and the more you spend on Ram, Video cards etc the better. I've got a dual 2.00 with a 6800ddl (worth it) and it plays fantastically. Buy it.

    Quake 4 great gameplay

While Doom 3 is virtualy not playable on my Powermac dual 1.8G, this game, based on the same engine, really rocks!
Only downside is the realatively long loading times.
Of course, when you put the optiones to the higher levels, it starts to get slow aswell but you get the feeling that the people of ID software also wanted to keep the people on 'older' systems playing.

    Awesomeness

Written by LK from Jewell Ridge

    Apr 17, 2006

This game, like many other id games, is freakin' awesome.
It's artwork, is like none other.
The overall feel of the levels, good.
The graphics, well if you've ever seen Doom 3 in action, wait till you see this game.

The only downside is, its too short, and theres no real mod support, even though the PC version's SDK has GCC 4 support (whats needed to compile mods), but the PC version is at version 1.1, and the Mac version is at 1.0.4.
