    Stands the test of time

    Written by DS from Raleigh

    Aug 20, 2009

I recently loaded Quake 4 back onto my Mac and played through it. It still delivered the visceral thrills that it had back in 2006. It isn't the hardest game and the enemy AI is lacking compared to recent shooters but for a solid, atmospheric FPS it still has teeth. I hope id delivers on Rage. I need a new FPS for my mac.

    Worth buying,

    Written by KJ from Courtenay

    Aug 3, 2009

The games graphics were not COD4 but were still very good. My only real quibble with the game was the sound. If you use the new Intel based Macbook you have to download an update to even get sound witch was no big deal but even after the update it cut out twice on me and trough trial and error I found out I just needed to restart my computer so no big deal. I also think that the game could have used a few check points closer to some of the harder ares but hitting the save button once in awhile is an easy fix, all and all it was definitely worth buying except you are left a bit hanging at the end and Id soft has no plans to make a quake 5 but that does not take away from the game itself.

    Quake 4 is the best

    Written by GL

I run Q4 on my iBook G4 (2006) with 1.5 Gb of memory.
It runs well but sometimes freezes when in video mode such as when descending in an elevator.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to overcome the freezing?

    dumb "anti-piracy measure"

    Written by DC from Toronto

    Jul 21, 2008

In order to play this game, you must have the CD in the drive. I called Aspyr to ask why every time I wanted to play, the software asked me to insert the CD, and I was told it is a way to prevent piracy. This is one of the most useless things I have ever heard of. I would not have bought this game had I known I was chained to a CD in order to use it. Come on, would anyone accept having to insert the installer CD every time one needed to use Photoshop, InDesign or Quark Xpress? I am now stuck with a ridiculous game that defeats the purpose of having a "portable" laptop.

Great! Help fix the widescreen problem

Written by AG from Winter Haven

    Jul 7, 2008

Under the system settings there is a choice next to resolution which is aspect ratio. If you have a MBP like my self. Changing it to 16:10 (make sure it isn't at 16:9) and you will be able to get better res. like 1280x800 or 1440x900.
Plus for those of you that gave it less stars just because you didn't know how to change the aspect ratio doesn't mean you should have rated it any less. Google...Use it, it helps a lot. lol

    Great Game

    Written by WS from Mississauga

This is a great FPS. It plays great on my MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz. Even more surprising, it plays well on my new Mac Mini 2.0GHz at low graphics settings. Since the mini is hooked up to my 50" Plasma, makes for quite a gaming platform.

Fantastic game, runs great on older CD Macs!

    Written by BD from Toronto

    Dec 28, 2007

I was a bit nervous at first buying this game, because I have an older 17" MBP (Core Duo) but with 2 gigs of ram and XI1600, the game runs smoothly on even higher settings. It has a great single player storyline that has a good replay value (i'm currently playing it again for the third time) and the multi-player is basically Q3 with better graphics. Had some sound issues at first, but repairing permissions and updating the software solved that fast. Highly recommended for FPS fans

Great game, great graphics and sound. I've played it on 20" iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.4 and then 10.5. This is one of those games that you will be playing over again every once in a while.

I bought this when I bought my IMAC 23 (April 07). It does not recognize the sound card and I get no sound. Graphics look great, but it missing something without sound. I guess I will have to box my MAC up and see a genious. I already tried this once before and didn't have much luck.

    Great.....until

    Written by EK from Coronado

    Oct 23, 2007

I bought this after reading all the great reviews. I am running it on my 2.4MBP. Graphics are amazing, game play is smooth and flawless.........until late in play it lockups for no aparent reason, and the only way to get anything to respond is to do a hard shutdown. I have used every setting possible with my MBP, extremely high, to extremely low. The game doesn't even give any signs of it performing poorly, I will be blasting strogs all over the place with every weapon available and then I will go around a corner where there is nothing but a wall.....and bam...locked up. Does it completely randomly, at different places and after different amounts of game play. Other wise this is a great game. Hopefully this is just a one case incident and not a production problem..........testers!!!!

Running it on my 2.2MBP. No stability issues and the graphics are great on high settings; no lag issues at all. Game play is very fun; it's the type of fps that doesn't require a lot of thought.

    Superb game

This game is the best game I have ever played. I personaly think it is better than Rome total war, King Kong, Halo, Diablo, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, and all those other games. I played this game on my new MacBook Pro and it runs smoothly as silk. In conclusion, this game kicks butt. I recomend this game to all those people with a mac.

TERRIBLY CHOPPY, not a good game for Macs

    Written by NW from Cambridge

    Jun 13, 2007

I played this game on my brand new MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz, 256MB nVidia Video RAM, with settings at medium resolution and no shadow, and the game was still very choppy. This is what it felt like playing the game: I-fe-lt-lik-e-I-was-wa-tc-hing-a-s-trea-m-i-n-g-v-id-e-o-w-ith-a-l-o-w-s-p-eed-in-t-e-r-ne-t-c-on-n-e-c-ti-o-n.

    Runs on my iBook!

    Written by CM from Adelaide

    Apr 11, 2007

Good game, even runs on my 12 inch iBook G4 (2006), though on minimal gfx. Unfortunately, it looks like multiplay with bots (featured in Quake 3) is going to have to be done with a mod of some sort.
Anyhow, the game has the only strong story line an Id game has ever had, and is designed to have a sequel (leaves the plot open for more).

Just for info my iBook stats:
    1.33 GHz
    512 RAM
32 MB ATI Radeon 9550 mobility
Mac OS X 10.4.9, but works with 10.4.5 and others

So, if you do have a slightly slower mac, don't worry, it'll run, but dont expect it to rival your mate's Mac Pro

    Want a challenge?

Written by JS from New Haven

    Apr 5, 2007

Quake 4 runs on the Doom 3 engine, so the game is a looker of course. It takes a different path ditching closed environments for tons of open levels. With great weapon staples from the series, and some REALLY challenging segments, Quake 4 will challenge your trigger finger, and occasionally your patience. This and some minor slowdown on my machine hold this from absolute greatness.

Not as good as Doom III on every level

    Written by RG

    Mar 16, 2007

I Like this game but the trouble is I had Doom 3 before hand and Doom 3 is better on game play, graphics on Doom 3 are loads better and weapons are loads better to every point Doom 3 is a better game. Doom 3 is tricky with multiplayer over the internet as its own server is not great but other than that buy Doom 3 over Quake 4.
    happy gaming

on my imac G5this game runs perfectly smoothly... when you're looking at a wall. With the slightest action or movement the framerater drops to about .5 fps. DON'T GET THIS GAME FOR IMAC G5. GET IT FOR XBOX 360.
