    Beware!

Written by JB from San Rafael

    Mar 14, 2007

I'm a pro musician and hoped to use this product to record live music sometimes, as well as spoken word. I was so excited when the sales person at Apple said it would record in CD quality.
The problem is that the mics are so sensitive that they pick up the sound of the hard drive spinning inside my Ipod! That is so anoying and makes the recording useless for me.
I also own a 4th generation 60 GB Ipod and the mic is attached to the top of the ipod rather than the bottom and I don't hear the hard drive spinning and clicking away.

    Love/Hate

    Written by BM from Chesterfield

Great sound quality and you can use external power while recording. However you cannot monitor with headphones while you are recording! How anyone could overlook this simple necessity is beyond me. So I called both manufacturers. Apple claims it's part of Belkin's software that prohibits this. Belkin claims it's Apple's software that prohibits it. So in the end I really don't use this to record music on the spot as much as I used my minidisc. Simply because it's such a hassle to record and listen back over and over to find good mic placement. Fix that one thing and I'd love it!

    Broken!

    Written by CP from Clawson

This product worked great, really. My previous experience with recorders for the iPod weren't all that great, and this was way better. Then it just stopped working. I didn't drop it, or throw it, or bang it. It just stopped working. My iPod Video doesn't even recognize when it's plugged in. It's like it stopped existing.

    Compact and Powerful

    Written by WB from Rolla

I use the TuneTalk for live interviews in the field and find that it works very well for this purpose. I especially like its wireless design and it is easy to carry in the slimmest of attaches or folders. The included stand is flimsy and of poor design...Belkin should re-design the stand and recall the old ones! Otherwise, I would have given it a five-star rating.

    Didn't work for me!

    Written by SR from Watertown

    Jan 29, 2007

I just got a new iPod Nano the same time I bought this because I wanted to record my Economics class. My Professor has really bad handwriting and if you don't keep up with him while he is talking and writing notes, you can't go back to re-read what he wrote! So I thought this would be pretty cool. I used it just at home to try it out and the sound was not good, it had a lot of hissing noise and after I messed around with it for a while I decided to take it back for a refund. Then later that evening I wanted to listen to music on my iPod and it was all jammed up. I had to restore the iPod and I only had the thing for one day! I don’t know if it matters that I used my MacBook Pro to sync my music onto the iPod, but all I know is this didn’t work for me. I’m going to try the other one and see if that one works better.

Very impressive - with a Nano even!

    Written by EM from Brampton

    Jan 20, 2007

After researching, I ordered from the online Apple store - had it two days later. Plugged the TuneTalk into my Nano and the Nano screen asked me if I wanted to record now. Away I went. (Yes - a Nano - no hard disc noise!)
As a bass player in a band I was shocked to be able to hear the lowest notes on my 5 string during a band practice I recorded - I had read the frequency response didn't go very low. It sounded surprisingly good. The stereo separation is minimal, and the band caused the autogain feature to do a lot of compression, but there was minimal distortion and there was good clarity of the instruments.
I have also gone out of good phantom powered mics into an audio interface and directly into the stereo-in of the TuneTalk - brilliant!
Given the price - this is a fantastic portable recording solution!

    Incompatible

    Written by CL from Memphis

    Jan 18, 2007

I was very disappointed with this product. I have an Apple-formated iPod. When I attempted to use this product, it recorded nothing. Not static, not white-noise, not the hum of the hard-drive. It recorded silence for however many seconds I attempted to record. The product was sufficiently connected and my iPod plays my music just fine. When I tried the TuneTalk with my rommate's Windows-formatted iPod, it worked perfectly. We both have the 30 GB iPod video. I called the Belkin tech support, but they were of no help, whatsoever. If anyone has any tips or ideas as to why this happened, please let me know. I'm 2 hours away from the nearest Apple Store, so it looks like I'll be taking a road trip this weekend to replace it.

    Great Product For Musicians

I`m a Grade 10 flute student and I recnetly bought this in hope it would record myself with an accompanist. I was very pleased with the sound quality, but I could hear a bit of hum from the hard drive. To allieviate this i bought a Yamaha flute microphone. Thisworked wondersfor this prroduct. The sound is better and the hum is gone. I have bought and returned may digital recorders for iPods and ones that are their own unit. I had the same problem with all of them.... the flute sounded like a whistle and the top range of the flute sounded awful. This recorder is the only one that has sounded superb thoughtt my entire range on the flute. Well done BELKIN!

    THE BEST VOICE RECORDER

    Written by MD

    Jan 8, 2007

I have bought Extrememac MICROMEMO and BELKIN tune talk, and I have choised Belkin because:

-I can use Belkin with my case, Micromemo needs special case.

-Charge while recording :"The most important!"
The Belkin has a USB connector, I use my IPOD USB charge to record my classes. Without charger the battery dies in 2 hours and you will need wait more 1 hour to charge your ipod.

    -Micromemo has a useless button;
Why do you need a button to stop the sound while recording?
If you press the button(on the Micromemo logo), you will stop the sound ( only the sound), Ipod dont stop the recording and you will know after when you listen your record.
Belkin has a button but it is a shortcut to record.

    -Auto gain to external microphone;
Belkin and MIcromemo record the HD´s noise, if you need record your music, buy an external stereomic 3,5mm. The Belkin advantage is anadjust to external microphone.

    Prices:
Belkin is more expensive but if you buy in England buy in Currys for 39 pounds.

    Disappointed.

Written by DP from Crystal City

    Jan 3, 2007

I was really disappointed by this product. My wife bought it for me as a Christmas present because I wanted to record sound effects and being a musician I wanted to record song ideas with it. The first thing that I noticed was that it picks up the sound of the hard drive running when recording in high quality mode. You can hear the Ipod hard drive start and stop while you're recording. I didn't really mind this but did recording in low quality mode to cut down on the hard drive noise.

I also only had this microphone for three days and I was extremely careful with it due to knowing it's price. It suddenly just stopped working. I pressed record today and nothing was recorded but static. I did this several times to try to get it to work but there was still nothing recorded. My wife and I ended up taking it back to the store and got our money back because I can't see spending money on something that breaks so easily. I enjoyed using it while it was working but it quit working.

So, I had high expectations but I was disappointed by this product.

    Works Great, Clear Sound Quality

    Written by JL from Calgary

I'm a journalism student and we had to write a story on a presentation being held in a theater hall. I was a good 20 feet away from the presenter, and the TuneTalk picked up absolutely everything. The sound quality was crystal clear. I've also had to use it in really close up situations with a lot of background noise, and it's still worked brilliantly. Amazing product.

Tune talk works. iPod recording suffers half second dropouts every 2 min.

Written by GC from New City

    Dec 20, 2006

In all fairness the Belkin works fine. It is the iPod 30Gb, however that lets me down. While recording, everytime the hard drive spins up (to write record buffer) there is a gap of half a second. It eats words and for live music it is unusable. I read on forums that reformatting might help. I tried another suggestion which was to use a defragmenting utility to leave the iPod with a 2,5 Gbyte contiguous free block. This didn't help as my test recordings still skip. Apple need to update firmware to compensate for disk spinups and dropouts.Until then, I would hold off on buying any recording device.

    What's Everyones Problem? Lasts Long...

Written by AM from Los Angeles

I sing and have been waiting with baited breath for this product so I can record jam sessions, lessons etc. But I almost didn't buy it after reading the negative reviews about battery life. I was also worried about gobbling up storage space. So yesterday I ran an experiment. I charged up my 60 gig iPod and just ran the recorder until the battery ran out. It ran for almost 5 hours and recorded 3/4 of a gig of material Yeah! That's much more battery life and much less space than I feared.

Yes, there it does pick up the distinct hum of the hard drive as part of its room tone. But I can live with that for the convenience of a mic I'm sure to have with me all the time.

Sound quality is ok, but bad design!!

    Written by SR from Edison

    Dec 6, 2006

How can one design a product without the ability to charge it using the the mains? The least they could have done is put the ipod charging interface instead of a regular USB port, considering the microphone uses so much of battery power.
I guess a third party needs to make a charger for IPod using the USB interface as apple won't make it and looks like belkin is incapable of making it.

    Unbelievably Horrible Product!

    Written by SD from Potomac

    Nov 26, 2006

I bought this product from the local Apple Store but unfortunately I did not use it within the 14 days. So now I cannot return it to Apple. The product has all the problems listed in other reviews: heavy battery consumption, hissing sound of the drive etc. But what I experienced was even more serious. After I used this device on my 60GB iPod only once, my iPod started to freeze. My iTunes library started to malfunction. A second iPod that is linked to the same library started to freeze too. I could not update both these iPods. So I had to do the unthinkable. Both iPods were brought to the original factory setting. Voice Memos recorded with TuneTalk had to be removed from the library. I have never used the product again and both my iPods are working great once again. This product has a serious software issue and unless that is fixed it should not be sold.

The battery last three hours on a full charge. Have never hear the harddrive while recording and I use it with my iPod all the time.
