Do not buy
Written by LG from Heidelberg

Wow, I just wrote a review for this the other day saying how great the sound quality was (which it still is). BUT, it skips non stop. I tried to record a 3 hour lecture and i'm missing half of what my prof is saying. I'm so frustrated.
What a waste of time, effort and money.

Great Sound
Written by NS from Salt Lake City

I am really pleased with this product. I bought it at my campus bookstore. It is more expensive than some of the other ones, but the quality is wonderful for recording lectures. The file sizes are rather big, but I set the recording to highest quality.
I have only one complaint - why didn't they make it in white? That would have been cool, but as far as the product goes - 5 stars!15 of 20 people found this useful

Tried to use this for lectures. It drains the battery so badly I am unable to tape 3 hour class. Voice quality is fine, just doesn't last.

better than expect
Written by HI from aaa

I was hesitated between this and Olympus WS-300 voice recorder. I worried about consumption of battery. I don't need to record a lecture with stereo. Actually, this mono is 16bit, 22mhz which is much better than general voice recorder(8bit/12Mhz). Recording was very clear and sensitive. It works well in my backpack with 3 feet distance. Most of all, 3 1/2 hours continuous recording in Mono mode with no error!!

Constant audio clipping, Nano locks up
Written by BA from Austin
Aug 4, 2007
I get some audio clipping (distortion) on recordings using the built in mic with autogain on. Even when recording something very quiet, there's clipping.
The TuneTalk Stereo has also caused my Nano to lock up and act very strangely a few times after taking it off. A soft reset fixes the problem, but it's a nuisance.16 of 24 people found this useful

I want it in white!!! Listen to Ipod engine noise too!
Written by DC from CALGARY

Great product with excellent recording quality and recording sensitivity on a good external microphone. Because TuneTalk plugs into the ipod it will pick up all the hard drive noise (they should have included a flexible extension cable to isolate the microphone from the ipod drive).
On high quality setting expect the drive noise to be a frequent issue with reduced battery life. The adapter may fall off if knocked. Its an expensive lesson!
Expect the ipod to jump to the record menu all the time, even when powering up. Seriously aggrivating unless you like plugging/unplugging it.!22 of 24 people found this useful

Great Hypnosis recording
Written by LC

My client brought this to his session and showed me how to use it in a second and it was so easy it didn't distract from the concentration at all. Also has a timer that recorded the exact length - never knew exactly before! Now he has it to travel with and can miss his next two sessions. What a great device! I am giving one to my son-in-law for his grad classes.

Great Quality but skips.
Written by SH from Los Gatos

TuneTalk works much better than most around its price point. The recording quality is very good; however it skips. I would have recorded 15 minutes of audio and when I listen back the audio would have skipped/cut off about five seconds for every two to three minutes.

I am a voice teacher and song-writer and I bought this device to record spur-of-the-moment song ideas whenever a pen and pad was not accessible. This thing is sooo awesome especially for recording my lessons and converting them to mp3's. I love it and I highly recommend it to teachers, students, songwriters, anyone really. Great product!!!

Great Recorder, Not -so-great external power access
Written by DA from Lahaina
May 15, 2007
I think this is an awesome recording accessory. But for some reason when I plug in to the external USB power supply, it doesn't charge.
I plug it in to the power supply, when it says battery running low. Then I get a message that says "not supported" or " unable to record...no power" etc.
Not sure what the deal is. It usually records about 80 minutes before the ipod power runs out. Other than that if I can get the external supply to function this would be a (5) star product.
Any suggestions21 of 25 people found this useful

Thank You!
Written by KF from Redding

Thank you for sending me the educational email update highlighting a teacher who uses the Belkin TuneTalk Stereo to record her students' reading. I love it! My Kindergarten students have gone crazy over who gets to be recorded next! I insert their recording into the PowerPoint of a scanned reader. Everyone can hear the student read as the pages of the book are displayed on a large screen. The Belkin is so easy to use with my iMac. I excitedly ran around school talking about how innovative it is. Everyone thought it was a terrific concept. Thank you, Apple, for making me a better teacher. Keep those ideas and products coming!

I can't figure out how long it will record!
Written by BT from New York
Apr 11, 2007
I use the Belkin recorder with iPod and quality-wise, it definitely delivers. However I call the Belkin customer service number, I examine the user manual, I look all over Apple's web page, and all to no avail! Nowhere can I seem to find any information how long this thing will record. Am I going to be in in the middle of conducting a 60-minute interview and it just shuts off even though I have the memory space available on my iPod? We were recording a live musical performance the other night and it just shut off after 49 minutes of recording....! Does this mean 49 minutes is my limit?? Why is this something Belkin wouldn't publish in their user manual?

Highly Recommended - Sounds Good
Written by DM from Calgary

I've had this mic for more than 5 months now - the recording quality is very good - even for music. I use it to record rehearsals all the time, and even gigs now and then. For a sample recording visit danielmenjivar. com and click on "Chica de Ipanema" in the audio section - the band was quite loud (especially the drummer) but the recording still sounds good. The 5G video ipod and mic were on a table about 10 feet away from the stage... ;-)

Troubleshooting and a small review (nano G2)
Written by DS from Stockport
Apr 8, 2007
In my experience this microphone appeared to be recording absolute silence at the high quality setting. I realised that on my nano, while I could listen back to recordings I made at the lower quality setting just fine, those at the higher setting seemed completely blank. However, as I discovered while on the cusp of sending the thing back, upon syncing with iTunes the files can be played back fine from your library, just not from the iPod itself.
So, if your microphone doesn't seem to be working, have a listen to things in iTunes before you try returning it. I would be interested to know whether this is the same for all nano users.
And in brief, a review: this is alright as microphones go. Signal to noise ain't dazzling, stereo separation isn't the best with the built in microphone, and it looks awkward plugged into the bottom of a nano. Despite all that, it does the job for taking notes, recording lectures, bits of field recording and so on, and has a very simple interface. If I could listen back to my recordings on the iPod itself I'd be a happier man, but as it stands I think this is the best microphone available for the nano.25 of 31 people found this useful

Great portable solution for a band - finally !
Written by KJ
Mar 30, 2007
I recently received the TuneTalk as a gift from my brother and have used it a few times with my Nano to record my band during rehearsal. First off, I should point out that our band is GODAWFUL LOUD with two fuzzed out basses as the core of our sound .. and the TuneTalk does overload a bit when Dave and I both hit the low E's. We are experimenting with also moving the Nano a little further away and maybe actually turning down a little. What I have not tried yet is turning on the "auto-gain" feature, which sounds like it may be the way to go (based on a prior post) - I will try and repost the results.
All this being said - the Nano with the TuneTalk is exactly what we have been looking for - a simple, reliable push the button and play recorder. After rehearsal, its a simple process to download the recordings into Itunes and then import them into Garageband in AIFF or mp3 format for editing - if Apple could add a function to Garageband to bring the tracks directly in from the Nano that would really tighten up the process.
I do plan on trying the Tunetalk with a pair of external mics also - while this blows the whole ultraportable concept, it could yield very high quality recordings I think.26 of 30 people found this useful

OK with 8G Nano
Written by DA from Oakland
Mar 26, 2007
almost got 4 stars...
-Good sound for the size of the mic
-Super easy interface
-Nice shortcut button on mic
-low quality recording setting stores ~30 min of sound in ~80mb (better than I thought)
-Stereo function works well
Nitpicky Issues:
-No Dock connector on bottom of mic to power while recording. ( yes, it has the USB connection for power, but now I gotta have ANOTHER cable?!)
-Autogain button clunks around a bit when you turn mic side to side. (The mic DOES pick up that sound)
-Can't monitor recording quality while recording (no feature to do this, and, it blocks the headphone jack on the Nano anyway)
Why did I not give it 4 stars?
-Froze my nano after plugging and unplugging a few times. There was another review reporting a similar problem. doing the reboot thing (Holding down menu and select button for 6 sec) 'fixed' it, but I'm a little frustrated that this happened. Hey Belkin! Give the people a firmware fix for this thing to keep it from freezing. (and allow monitoring)
I'm going to keep it, because it performs a valuable function, but I'm warning my friends before they buy.24 of 27 people found this useful

Worked for me (attached external mic, using for podcast recording)
Written by HS from Newburyport
Mar 17, 2007
So far, so good. I've attached mine to an 2nd gen 8g nano. (No hard drive noise!) Further, I've attached an cheapo 'Shack mic (dynamic, non-powered) to the 1/8th" stereo input (took a few audio adapters) on it for recording interviews for podcasts. I'm conscious of potential battery issues, so I've only tried to use the rig for about an hour or so, but that's been fine - seems like I could have pushed it further. (knock on laptop) And, I could charge it off my laptop via the USB port while recording, theoretically (haven't actually tried that.)
The recordings do take up space (esp. on a nano), so if you're doing a lot of recording, it's helpful to have a laptop (with lots of battery power or a power source) nearby for frequent off-loading and re-charging. Oh - and the recordings show up in iTunes as .wav files - which I import into Audacity (I'm sure you could use Garage Band or something else, too) for editing. The recordings aren't ultra-high studio quality or anything (and no, you can't monitor with headphones while recording), but the setup is fine for my basic, vocal interview purposes.
Everything has worked pretty well for me - plug in the tunetalk and the "record now" screen comes right up. Sometimes I have to plug and unplug components of this whole setup (nano, tunetalk, mic) to get everything to communicate correctly (do your test runs before the big interview!)...but nothing unusual for gadgetry-inclined types. The TuneTalk also seems pretty durable to me, too. I'm admittedly a little tough on components - this has survived being banged around in my bag, stuffed in pockets and being scrutinized by airport security. In short, I like it so far!18 of 23 people found this useful
