I've had this game for a while now and do enjoy it. I'm a big fan of this era and there are so few games that this one by default rises to the top. The graphics during battles are outstanding and the multilingual audio is nice perk. Regrettably it doesn't get high marks from me based on 3 main reasons.
1) The AI is a little predictable. Generally he goes all in once the battle begins. Takes a bit of the strategy out of it.
2) The game positions the armies across a battlefield at a fair distance. You set up your army position as you choose then begin. The problem is there is a considerable amount of time watching and waiting while the armies approach each other. A speed control would be great to help here.
3) Occasional crashes are a nuisance.
But if you like the musket era this game is good enough.

Pretty Good Turn-Based Strategy Game

As a long time fan of the Total War series available for PC, I expected this game to be fairly similar to "Rome". It's nice to be able to do sea battles, and the land battles play out nicely as well.
As another user commented, I too experience frequent crashes at later stages in the game when there's a lot of content on the general map screen.
Compared to other current, excellent, turn-based strategy games I was expecting a little more from this one, but wasn't too disappointed.

A Warning For Macbook Users

I am not aware if this is common knowledge, but I was not aware. If you have a regular MacBook (and probably MacBook Air) this game will not work as the graphics card is not supported. I am told the MacBook Pro is adequate. I just purchased this game to go along with my new MacBook (purchased in May '08) and was disappointed to learn directly from the publisher's (Feral Interactive) tech support that it will not work. Though I had a new copy of the game the computer would simply spit the disk out after making unusual noises, and the one time it did accept the disk and I was able to install the game it would always freeze the computer on startup and leave me with a black screen that I made me force quit to the desktop or shut down via the power button. Apparently many Mac games are not compatible with the MacBook, and careful research is necessary as I have not seen it stated clearly for any game that entry level MacBooks are not compatible. I do find that the Age of Empires III demo works smoothly on my machine, and will probably buy it as a substitute. Based on the PC demo I played before I bought my MacBook I can confirm that the game is fun and worth the buy if you're in to this type of game play and history.

I had high hopes when I purchased this game. I was not pleased. The game crashes frequently and there isn't any patches at this time. If you do buy it be prepared to save and restart the game often.

A Best Buy for Mac Strategy Gamers

I don't normally write reviews but I had to for this game. I had been waiting for years to give this a try, as it came out on PC quite some time ago and long before the Mac version was released. it was worth the wait.

This game received mixed reviews from the PC crowd when it was released and so I was a little uncertain whether the game would be a good one or not (some of the reviews were quite scathing as a matter of fact). While it is not possible for a game to be all things to all people, it would seem that if you are making a game about Napoleonic warfare you have to also contend with the myriad of people who seem to get very bent out of shape by minor details.

Instead of re-hashing old news (and reviews), let me just give you the breakdown.

Plenty of options for warfare and diplomacy. you research and conquer just like many other games as well as build provincial improvements.

Plenty of units to choose from. Playing as one of 5 european powers, you will get a variety of ships and land units to choose from to build an unstoppable force. European powers have unique uniforms depending on the country selected (and in some cases units). What is very cool is that when you conquer a nation and recruit units from your new territory, they will not all of a sudden become your culture as in many other games. If you win in Egypt for example, you will be able to recruit a variety of units that were previously unavailable, such as camel cavalry. This creates a very unique feel to your armies as they will likely need to recruit more units after large engagements, so your army will start to reflect where it is stationed after a while.

Far too many options for 300 words or less, but with a fansite providing many high quality mods, this game is definitely a title worth checking out.

This game is absolutely amazing. You are controlling your whole empire, and also fighting and controling each of the individual battles. If you like strategic and tactical games, this is the game for you...MUST HAVE!!

This is a great table-top strategy war game. Even down to the sound effects of pieces being moved across the board! There are two levels; strategic and tactical. You control your whole empire and its armies but you can also play each individual battle in real-time, including naval battles. There is also enough complexity beyond warfare to include economic and political competition. There is also a nod to Civilization with a research/technology tree function which allows to build different buildings inside your empire. The software worked well on my Mac though sometimes I needed to restart my computer after I had shut down the game. The graphics are excellent and the game mechanics are easy to pick up. I give it a strong 8 out of 10.
