Good sound but really, really bad control knob

    Written by JB from Austin

    Nov 11, 2008

Sound is very good for the money but the designers made a big mistake with the slick, bullet-shaped control knob. It is so slippery that you will have to wrap it with tape or put a rubber band around it in order to use it.

    speakers not of equal volume

    Written by SB from NEWNAN

    Sep 16, 2008

received my nifty speakers today. easy set up and I think will be really surprisingly good !

only problem I'm having is that the speaker that has the vol control silver button - main speaker is so much louder than the other one. anyone found that to be the case ?
I thought at first that the silver button was a right left speaker balancer , but didn't seem to be that.

the main speaker is really good ! wish I could get the other speaker to have equalized volume.

    cell phone interference

    Written by EC from Amesbury

These speakers are very nice for the cost. I use them at school during the school year and then bring them home for the summers. The nice thing is that they are very durable (even in dorm room situations) and if you keep the box they're easy to transport. The sound is OKAY but better than I expected for 50 bucks. Volume goes up pretty far, also nice in a dorm. My only real complaint is that there's a lot of static when they're on. Sometimes even when the power is on but I'm not playing music. This seems especially bad if my cell phone is ANYWHERE near the speakers and I get a text message. Overall I think they are great for the price but if you have a lot of wireless devices in the room where you will be using them (TV remotes, cell phones, wireless internet...) be warned that it may cause some static.

You get what you pay for

they produce good sound; crisp, loud, enough bass. my only complaint is the constant static. if the speakers aren't on, they produce a very audible static that never stops. I've tried taking the cord out and putting it back in, or turning them off, but the only thing that stops it is to have music flying through them. so, good speakers, not the best. so if you have the money i would say its wiser to go for nicer ones.

    Good speakers, but..

    Written by LM from topanga

I bought my first pair of these and one of the speakers did not work the second week. So, i returned them and just plugged in the new ones and the sound is great, using it on my powerbook. But we bought a set for our new desk top computer and they sound terrible. Could be a short or something. Now i have to deal with Apple to return one set. I guess you get what you pay for. If you want speakers that give you good loud sound, it is not these. But, if you want a medium volume and don't mind the knob issue ,they are good for their money.

    !tiny !slippery !volume !knob

Written by JM from San Francisco

For the price, these are fine speakers--but out of the box a moderate-volume bass line breaks up (distortion), and what's with the tiny volume knob? you literally cannot turn the power on or off with one hand. placed behind my monitor, i have to reach around, pick the speaker up with one hand, and turn the slippery little knob with the other to turn it off. a great example of concept design trumping usability. applying some rubber cement to your fingers does help though. And since when did it become hip to provide no visual idea of what volume a speaker is at? Provides for many an opportunity to blast the neighbors out of their beds by accident.

    I wouldn't "Duet" if I were you....

Too high of a volume and they become fuzzy. The knob to turn the speakers on and to increase the volume requires either tiny tiny hands or high dexterity in the very tips of your fingers. I used it for my iPod several times but it's just not as good. It works pretty fair for my iBook, but that's about it. The electrical plug is pretty bulky and the cords tangle up a bit. But it can have pretty fair sound.

One speaker dead on arrival but still worth it

    Written by SR from Cambridge

    Aug 29, 2006

Despite being disappointed with the malfunctioning of one of the speakers upon arrival, I'm definitely impressed with the sound of the other *only* working speaker. I will have to return them to the nearest apple store which stinks, but I think the trip should be worth it... it beats listening to music with my laptop speakers.

I give 3 stars only b/c of the imperfect product and the hassle of going back to the store.

    They HISS!!!!

    Written by IF from Charlotte

    Mar 29, 2006

They sound great for the price. However, they hiss and are really irritating if you dont have music playing to drown the hiss out. I have to switch them off if I'm not listening to music otherwise they drive me crazy. I've read a few reviews where some people have the same problem - not sure if it's the case with all of them.

Not great, but a good value

For the price, these speakers will definitely do the job. The highs and lows aren't close to the more expensive options, but you will definitely get what you pay for.

    Alright for the money

Written by TM from Palm Coast

    May 11, 2005

Well they are o.k. for the price but when you have speakers out there that can produce much better sound quality for like $20 more you shouldn't buy these ones because you can't hear the music when you get up in the high volume levels but when your'e sitting right there next to them they are perfect!
