Rise of Nations - Gold Edition
Wonderful Culmination of the Civilization series
Written by AS from Chapel Hill
Dec 23, 2004
I've been a player of the Civ series since it first came out on the Mac. So, after the slight disappointment of Civ III and my dabbles in other, similar games (Alpha Centauri), I was thrilled to find RoN out for the Mac. It has not disappointed me. The graphics are quite stunning (and smooth on an iMac G4), the sound effects realistic enough, and the gameplay a challenge. The pace of RoN seems faster than the original Civs, mainly because it's now 'Real Time' - no 'End of Turn' buttons here. Something I also noticed is the slightly confusing game type selection - a result of the huge amount of different types of games one can play (there really are a load).
But, after a time to adapt, I can feel how incredibly addictive this game is..... there really is nothing in games, as fun as watching a band of your commados run rampage through a bunch of your enemy's archers.
Definitely worth buying, and you'll replay over and over and over....237 of 341 people found this useful

Not for new aluminum imac

Do not buy this game thinking it will work with the new imac. I bought this for the new 24" 2.8 ghz machine and according to the game's publisher, the new video card is not compatable. Might run on the white imacs, though....

Just great!!

As an experienced player of strategy and tactic games I have to say that I am stunned with RoN. It is close to Civ, but better. The nations have more distinguished traits and the interface is simple, even though the actions the units can make can be complex. The strategy part is outstanding. From a world map the player has to conquer the other empires, which happen in turns. The conquest itself, however, is real time. Different missions and different bonuses effect the outcome and every tactics buff will love the possibilities. To make it short: its great!

Not for new Mac
Written by EN from Groton

I am echoing comments from others. I wish I would have read their reviews before my purchase. This DOES NOT work on the newer iMacs as of January 2008. Please Apple! Introduce an update that will fix this - I understand this is currently affecting a number of games written for the pre-intel macs. It's too bad because this really is a great game .

Rise of Nations - Gold Edition
The most realistic Strategy out there (a kid's review)

This game is breathtaking! You will never be bored of it it is worth every penny. It spans about 10'000 years of human history from the ancient age to the information age, it has loads of diverse civilizations with unique units and benefits such as industry for the germans and empire for the british. The graphics are stunning and to examine in detail you can zoom in/ zoom out. Combat is also as reaistic as possible, calculating supply, number and position; rivers for example slow units down providing tactical advantages for the defender on the other side, and staying on the top of a hill gives you also more advantage. This game has so many features that you have to experience it for yourself.

If you enjoy strategy games you'll love this game. You will be entertained for hours and hours controlling different civilizations in history. From early basic times to current and even the future you control the destiny of your people. Chose dominance through military, economic or alliance. From sling shots to machine guns, to stealth bombers, to nuclear bombs and beyond you call all the shots. Worth the money!

I love playing games like this and I have to admit it was the first time I played this brand. I was amazed at how much detail went into the game. This game beats Command & Conquer out by a mile. I hope another will come out soon.
Playing on moderate can be hard, and I haven't graduated to a harder level yet. This game is a must have for anyone that likes to build nations and rule the world or kick computer butt. A+++++ in my book (or laptop).47 of 58 people found this useful

I love real time strategy games. I remember when Red Alert came out and I obsessed over that game for hours. Then came all the follow ups to it. The entire command and conquer series, and then the whole new generations as I like to call it. Starcraft, Warcraft, and the new Civilizations. It was all too much to handle. Then I read about this game after I bought my new PowerBook G4 for college. I noticed this game seemed to beat out the competion and so far it has. It's absolultey spectacular. The detail in graphics is awesome. It's so similar to civ and age of empires and combines that with the type of RTS games I use to love. It's awesome watchihng your options change as the times change and new types of units that are available to you as you go from Ancient Times to the Information Age. It's so good and I've been having a great time with this game. Hopefully more like this will come out soon. A must buy.

Does not work with new Aluminum iMac
Written by SJ from New York
Nov 19, 2007
I have a new 24" iMac aluminum 2.8 Ghz, 2GB RAM 500HD
Running latest OSX, Leopard.
This game does not work. It has a flickering effect on-screen making all interface and animations unplayable. You can't see the buttons, or anything else! Sent email to Destineer about problem. This is their reply:
"This is a known bug with the graphic drivers for your video card. We're currently working with Apple to get this resolved. The latest software update for your iMac addresses the graphics card specifically and may fix this issue, but at this time I can't guarantee that it does. You may need to wait for Apple to release an updated driver for Rise of Nations to work properly."
Buyer beware. Perhaps if enough people complain, this will be finally fixed. As of now, I cannot play the game.58 of 82 people found this useful

A GREAT GAME
Written by TM from Studio City

After playing all of the Civ and Age of Empire games, I hadn't bought Rise of Nations till last week because I thought the genre was done. I was so wrong. This game is very clever and spectacular in the graphics and game play. I just started playing and can't wait to get home tonight from work to continue leading my Romans to total conquest!

Fun Game
Written by LV from Fall River

It's a really fun game, and I've spent countless hours playing it, but I never really thought that there was too much of a difference between civilizations. By the end, everyone is just spitting out advanced infantry. Anyways, it was fun enough for me, but I never really got hooked on its scenario creator, since you would have to save what you had done, and then open it up from the main menu. (A simple "test" button would have helped). Age of Empires will treat beginner strategy gamers better, but it won't give you the same sense of kicking butt on a large scale like Rise of Nations does.

My Favorite

This game is by far my favorite for the Macintosh platform. Although, it does have some audio issues, and it isn't Universal, it works pretty well. If you don't like the technical game play of Civilization, then check this one out for sure. This is a four year old game.. so it's a little ridiculous to have the same pricing but it's worth every penny!!!

This game is a ton of fun. It can be quite challenging at the higher levels. It is very similar to the Age of Empires series, except that it takes the concept of strategic battle to a whole new level.

macsoft strikes again
Written by TC from Raleigh
Jan 3, 2008
Rise of Nations is a truly great game. Sadly, the porting work is sloppy. I've had it cause kernel panics on 2 different computers (1 Intel, 1 G5), and it heats up the gpu in my laptop (8600) over 80 degrees C. (And this is with all 4 corners propped up independently to maximize airflow) Pushing the limits is fine, but this game runs entirely in 2D. Windows machines with half the processing power of any mac on the market today ran it flawlessly while maxed out when the game hit the market. I love the game, but please don't support MacSoft's terrible porting work by buying it.

I love this game. I can't stop playing it! I have a 2 ghz MacBook Pro and this game has never crashed on me. It also has really unique features such as how every nation actually has official borders that enable you to do a lot of interesting things all centered around where the borders officially lay. Really fun game.
