Rise of Nations - Gold Edition
Truly great game!!
Written by TI from College Place

This is a great all around strategy game. There are hours and hours of fun with this game. I played this game for years on pc and when I made the smart move to Mac I was trilled to see it on this platform. I enjoy the way this game moves better than the Civilization or Age of Empires Series (taking turns- waiting). Lots of choices: from simple early era age (horses, spears, bow and arrow) all the way to Stealth Bombers, nuclear weapons, nuclear shields etc.
I have a Intel iMac and a PowerBook Pro with Snow Leopard and the game runs great on both. The game ran fine on Leopard OS also. Remember to load this game using the Administrator login or you might have trouble getting it to work! Once you figure out the easy to learn gameplay you will love it!2 of 2 people found this useful

Lost forever, maybe

Played RoN for years on pc's. When I moved the disc got lost. Can no longer get it in a pc version (have VMWarefusion on my mac) so since the mac version of the game won't play on the new IMacs, I can't play my favorite game ever. Very sad.

If you enjoy strategy games you'll love this game. You will be entertained for hours and hours controlling different civilizations in history. From early basic times to current and even the future you control the destiny of your people. Chose dominance through military, economic or alliance. From sling shots to machine guns, to stealth bombers, to nuclear bombs and beyond you call all the shots. Worth the money!

Not for new Mac
Written by EN from Groton
Jan 12, 2008
I am echoing comments from others. I wish I would have read their reviews before my purchase. This DOES NOT work on the newer iMacs as of January 2008. Please Apple! Introduce an update that will fix this - I understand this is currently affecting a number of games written for the pre-intel macs. It's too bad because this really is a great game .

macsoft strikes again
Written by TC from Raleigh
Jan 3, 2008
Rise of Nations is a truly great game. Sadly, the porting work is sloppy. I've had it cause kernel panics on 2 different computers (1 Intel, 1 G5), and it heats up the gpu in my laptop (8600) over 80 degrees C. (And this is with all 4 corners propped up independently to maximize airflow) Pushing the limits is fine, but this game runs entirely in 2D. Windows machines with half the processing power of any mac on the market today ran it flawlessly while maxed out when the game hit the market. I love the game, but please don't support MacSoft's terrible porting work by buying it.

Does not work with new Aluminum iMac
Written by SJ from New York
Nov 19, 2007
I have a new 24" iMac aluminum 2.8 Ghz, 2GB RAM 500HD
Running latest OSX, Leopard.
This game does not work. It has a flickering effect on-screen making all interface and animations unplayable. You can't see the buttons, or anything else! Sent email to Destineer about problem. This is their reply:
"This is a known bug with the graphic drivers for your video card. We're currently working with Apple to get this resolved. The latest software update for your iMac addresses the graphics card specifically and may fix this issue, but at this time I can't guarantee that it does. You may need to wait for Apple to release an updated driver for Rise of Nations to work properly."
Buyer beware. Perhaps if enough people complain, this will be finally fixed. As of now, I cannot play the game.58 of 82 people found this useful

Not for new aluminum imac

Do not buy this game thinking it will work with the new imac. I bought this for the new 24" 2.8 ghz machine and according to the game's publisher, the new video card is not compatable. Might run on the white imacs, though....

Great game, no issues
Written by JF from St. Andrews

Game play is like almost exactly like the Age of Empires series but from the player starts at the dawn of civilization and ends in the modern era. Game options are highly customizable and the campaigns are a lot of fun. No stability issues on a 2.2MBP; graphics never lag even with a lot of action and no crashes or sound issues. My only complaint is that it's expensive for an older game but it's still worth it.

My Favorite
Written by MT from Brighton

This game is by far my favorite for the Macintosh platform. Although, it does have some audio issues, and it isn't Universal, it works pretty well. If you don't like the technical game play of Civilization, then check this one out for sure. This is a four year old game.. so it's a little ridiculous to have the same pricing but it's worth every penny!!!

I love this game. I can't stop playing it! I have a 2 ghz MacBook Pro and this game has never crashed on me. It also has really unique features such as how every nation actually has official borders that enable you to do a lot of interesting things all centered around where the borders officially lay. Really fun game.

Great Game, But...

This is alot of fun. A combination of Civilization and Age of Empires. You can even play Napoleon, Alexander the Great, and so on. However, it tends to crash often, so just make sure you save often, or you can loose alot of work. All in all, it is very fun to play and can be a bit addictive.

The Rise of a Great Game
Written by DR from Canonsburg

I truly enjoyed this game, with its combination of turn-based single player to its extremely intense battles online, it does a good job and helps keep that one foot in the door for all the RTS games out there. The only complaint that I do have, is that the game sometimes will shut off, or on a rare occasion freeze but for the most part the game is a good solid RTS and if anyone enjoys sitting down, and trying to stratiegically take over the world, its a good buy

Unfortunately, besides being an overall good game it does crash very often. At least once every two to three times you play. Make sure you save repeatedly or maintain active the autosave cause you will be spending a lot of time loading back up...

Excellent RTS for Mac
Written by JH from Holland
Oct 16, 2006
This game is a happy middle ground between strategy games like Age of Empires and the Civilization franchise. The game offers plenty, with quick battles that can last as little as a half an hour, or much longer Conquer the World games that can take several days to complete. The game comes with built in support for mods, which is a huge bonus, because you can download mods and install them without having to worry about backing up the game or ruining core files.
RoN runs fine on both my iBook G4 and my Core Duo iMac. Interestingly enough, I have not noticed much of a boost in performance between the 1.33GHz G4 and the 2.0GHz Core Duo. Rosetta seems to have no problem translating the software. My only gripes with the game are that it has a rather long load time, low population caps (200 maximum in an un-modified game), and the sound became severely garbled during intense battles and did not improve afterwards.
All around, a very good purchase for the Mac gamer.62 of 116 people found this useful
