Runs fine on Snow Leopard 10.6; Install Rosetta and Quicktime 7
Written by SM from San Francisco
Sep 5, 2009
Just tested on my early 2008 MacPro, 10.6 Leopard, Nvidia 8800GT graphics card. Game seems to run fine, all functionality intact, no issues observed (and I checked pretty much every menu option and in-game functionality there is). I suspect older games like this may not work correctly, as previous poster described, if you don't install Rosetta and Quicktime 7 along with Snow Leopard (they're options in the Snow Leopard Installer). If you forget to install them, view the Read Me on the Snow Leopard DVD for how to go back and install these "Optional" items as one-offs.

Graphics broken on Snow Leopard
Written by HE from Sunderland

The resource map is unreadable and trying to display the readme causes the game to become unresponsive--you have to use a Apple-Q to exit.

Works Great!

I switched from a Window XP computer to a iMac OS X and the graphics are way better!! The only time when the graphics start to get bad is when you zoom in really really close. It only stutters we when you have about 100 trains and you are in a crowed area up close to a train. We you zoom out sometimes the ground turn's gray but only a split second. Another thing is the tracks are 2-D instead of 3-D but it does not really bother me, and most of the time i am looking at the trains and not the tracks. Over all if your looking to by this game i would recommend it.

Great Game

I am running this great game on a MacBook 2.2GHz intel Core 2 Duo. OS 10.5.x and it runs great. I love the dynamics of the economy and the progress of technology as the years go by. I recommend this game who likes Sim City. Although you are not building a city, you are still balancing budgets and supporting many cities with the services your locomotive company offers them.

Great Fun all around
Written by EJ from Tulsa

I have to admit, while this game seemed a bit odd right out of the gates (I've never played a RR tycoon game), I caught on rather quickly and found this to be enormously fun! The mechanics are great, the economy is a bit tricky to figure out but you can get the hang of it, and so far the game is without any snags! The only minor thing is where the terrain will flash grey at some levels of zooming, but a quick menu change or zooming in to another level will fix it immediately!
My favorite part of the game so far is working the stock market. Maybe it's the financial side of the game I enjoy so much! The much HARDER part however, is figuring out just how to get the right goods to the right place without them walking their way there on their own (land convoys run by AI), or getting it sent to the wrong station (happens if you have "any freight" selected on trains). While that seems like quite a pain, that is the kind of railroad mastery you need to be able to pull off to get the gold medals, leaving you with plenty of replay value!
(I haven't played the multiplayer yet, so I can't comment on that.)9 of 10 people found this useful

I loved this game. Our New iMac is so much better at graphics than our old Windows 98 computer and it really brings out the best in Railroad Tycoon 3.

Well, this is my first exposure to any off-the-shelf software for Mac and I can't say I'm pleased. The game won't install at all. I've read the other reviews/tips with no success. Perhaps I'm just not installing it correctly as this is my first Mac install. but it sure makes me think twice about the two grand I dumped into this MacBook Pro after switching from PC... Can't say I've ever had a piece of software that failed to load on my Gateway.

i bought the game seeing how it had great comments. i even read the one negative comment. well i have to agree with him. i load the game, watch the preview movie, and then the screen goes gray. i can hear the music but dont know why i'm clicking or viewing. i've emailed the MacSoft game support, but they're useless. They replied once, and sent them my system information, and now a month later i've yet to hear from them. i've been let down.

i am very excited! i got a new imac for holidays (2.8 intel) and my railroad tycoon works like a charm. i ran out of space on hard drive and old imac (17" imac) was too slow. very stable. only very infrequently have i had a crash or a glitch. beautiful graphics. i have not tried the multi player feature.

LIke GG, I bought the game and it won't install. Support is useless. Game is useless. At least the box is nice. One star is too much. Apple says avoid comments about support. Why? Because it's true? Garbage.

I can't stop playing it.
Written by MM from Dayton

I wasn't expecting much for an under $20 game. But how wrong I was.
In this sim you are a railroad Tycoon starting your own railroad from scratch. You have your business to keep track of which consists of laying tracks, buying trains, setting up routes, maintenance, buying other businesses, your companies stock price, issuing bonds and more. But you also have your personal finances and stock purchases to keep track of. The goal of the game is to create a successful railroad company and get yourself rich in the process.
I’m usually not into simulation type games, but this one is fun and addictive! Great graphics too.89 of 163 people found this useful

This is the best game at the best price! It's very addictive; I'm hooked. The one thing is that I can't figure out how to edit the trains color, looks, etc. and place cities in map editor, but I STILL give it a 5-star!

Disappointed
Written by GG from Dulles

I bought this to play with my train-crazy son. Unfortunately, the game won't install, but rather shows an error when reading the install disc. The customer support site (for the PC version -- Mac version online support is practically nonexistant) indicated this is a common problem. I tried copying the files to the hard drive and installing from there, same error. My guess is the disc's bad. I know these things happen, but it's not a sign of good quality control. Now I get to send it back.

This was my first "real" game for my MacG4. WOW!! Once I figured it out, I was hooked. It is very addicting and challenges me every time I play it. The graphics are superb and it has a fine soundtrack also. You do need a good amount of ram, (i have 1gig and 450Prossesor) so close down other apps, before starting, because as you build up amount of trains, businesses, people etc. It does suck up ram. Surprising amount of fun for such a low price.!!
