Not as good as they used to make it

    • Written by from Honolulu

I just upgraded from my iPad 2 to the iPad air and wanted to get the Smart Cover since I loved my old one. I was really disappointed to find out they got cheap on the magnetic spine part of the cover. The iPad 2 Smart Cover had a metal spine with a swiveling hinge and now the magnetic part is only held on by a thin piece of polyurethane that kind of looks like it's glued on. I am worried about it peeling off so I am going to return it right away. Also, like the other review it is more of a coral color than pink so keep that in mind before ordering.

    Don't work anymore

    • Written by from Colorado Springs

They changed the 4 panel design to 3 panels, so the magnets have trouble sticking together. My iPad Air has taken a few slams to the table as I try to use it in the upright position, and the keyboard position is also very unstable. They need a redesign, quick! My advice is not to buy one.

The cover fits nicely, however, the color is more of a coral, than a pink. I wanted a pink similar to the iPad 2 cover, and this is definitely not!

Not as Good as the Old Smart Cover

    • Written by from Powell

This is my third iPad and third iPad Smart Cover. I was a serious fan of the last two because I live how it protects my iPad without bulking up the device. That said, the new iteration is a disappointment.

First, the metal hinge that attached the cover to the iPad has been replaced by a plastic one, and it's less sturdy. Second -- and this is a real problem -- the case is must less secure when propping up the iPad for portrait reading. I'm always worried it's going to collapse, which is distracting.

This is a real disappointment. My iPad is my go-to device for work and media use, and now it's less functional. I've been disappointed with third-party cases and covers -- too bulky -- but the functionality of the new Smart Cover is a problem -- and I hate that because I love the iPad Air. Apple, we expect better from you.

    Poor design

    • Written by from Macon

The three panel design does not work as well the older four panel Smart Cover. The fourth fold/panel held things together. This design collapses with slightest pressure. If there was an alternative cover I would buy it. This cover is too expensive for such a poor design. I wonder if the designers ever used the thing on an iPad Air?

    I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up!

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I'm an avid Apple fan who has been consistently drawn to the company's products because of their quality and ease of use. My first of more than 30 computers was the original MacPlus, and my most recent is an iPad Air. The leather case I purchased with my iPad Air is a great cover. However, as a stand it is the worst product Apple product I've ever owned. Heck, my original iPad came with a case that was a far superior stand device than this overpriced horrible excuse for a stand I'm using now. I use an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and still the iPad won't stay up. Ugh! I miss Steve Jobs.

Bad fit: cover does not lie flat on the screen!

    • Written by from Mayfield Heights

The magnets must be misaligned or something: poor design.

When closed, the cover "tents up" several millimeters. It looks ugly/cheap, fails to keep dust/grit out, and catches easily on things like a little bit of a needless corner.

If it actually snapped shut and lay flat like previous Smart Covers, I'd like it a lot better.

Be warned: the fit is poor, like a cheap third-party knock-off cover. Only this isn't cheap.

Not as good as the original. It doesn't fold and hold up like the original, doesn't come in leather and feels cheap for an Apple product.

Doesn't lay flat on iPad screen!

    • Written by from Auburn Hills

I agree with the others that this smart cover is not of the same quality as the previous one (for me the iPad 2 smart cover). It just doesn't lay flat onto the screen. Bad design. I'll use it for now, but I also agree this item is way too expensive for the loss in quality.

Excellent Leather Case for the iPad Air!!

    • Written by from Euless

I absolutely love the new Smart Case for the iPad Air...as it fits my tablet perfectly - and is soft to the touch. I've not experienced any of the problems mentioned by the other reviewers, as my case supports my iPad Air in the 2 primary positions it was designed for without any possibility of collapsing. I've personally used numerous other tablets and mobile devices with various types of covers/cases...and I believe this leather case is by far the best tablet case I've ever owned. I guess it's all in ones perspective. I would highly recommend buying this leather case for the iPad Air, as it is a very high quality case for protecting and repositioning your iPad Air. By the way...I don't work for Apple.

Disappointed first, but it end up pretty good.

    • Written by from Toronto

I was disappinted when I first got it. It doesn't have the metal magnet in the outside like before. It has three panels instead of four. It doesn't have the leather touch like the iPad 2 version. After a few weeks of use, I actually quite like it. My new iPad Air doesn't get scratch from the metal magnets like before. I'm getting better on how to handle it using the three panels. And the screen is much clear than before because of the new material they use. Give it time, it works.

    Very pleased

    • Written by from Helsinki

I almost did not buy the smart cover for my ipad air after reading the reviews here. I have to say I'm glad that I decided to take my changes and buy the product after all.

I disagree with the reviews saying that this is far worse product that the smart cover for the earlier ipads. For my experience with the product, I have found that this model holds at place better than the previous ones. The magnet is actually quite strong and it fits nicely.

Of course, it's not ideal that the cover only folds to 3 pieces instead of 4, like the previous models but considering all it works really well.

I am horrible surprise with the cover

    • Written by from Hollywood

The cover stretch too much over itself due to the lack of support, remember is only three slacks, while the iPad 2 has four. it is weak, expensive and I do not recommend this product

I've never owned an iPad before and I'm reading the bad reviews, but I like it. Stands up nicely while typing, have no problem with it falling over and I'm not really a light typer. Love the coral color, unlike some I would not have bought a straight pink. First day I've used it, so will repost if I change my mind. I read you need to get a Belkin cover for the back because this one has no back cover. Any comments on this?

    Works just fine

    • Written by from Montebello

I purchased the Smart Cover for my new iPad Air to compliment my tech 21 mesh case and it works just fine. You have to fold it so the microfiber is exposed. There are no problems with the item. I originally purchased the smart case but after 5 days it aged terribly. It looked like I had it for years. The dyed leather is not a good option. The Smart Cover is a much better choice.

    Poor design

    • Written by from Moorhead

Purchased the smart cover along with the iPad Air because I was very pleased with the earlier versions of this cover. I am replacing it with a different style of cover. The 3 section fold back is not as comfortable in my hand as the 4 section. Also the fold back next to the magnet that holds the cover to the iPad is floppy, not secure as in the smart cover for the previous iPads. Not surprised to see the comments of others concerning this product. I have not made a decision on a replacement cover, but I think that I will try the smart case.

Same Price, Lower Quality - Don't Buy It

    • Written by from Apple valley

The older iPad cases were much better. The new one for the iPad Air is cheaper in quality. The "stand" for use when key-boarding or to prop the iPad up for watching movies, etc, DOES NOT WORK. The cheap plastic composit used will not hold it's form or place. I fold up the sections to prop up my iPad and is immediately unfolds and will NOT hold up the iPad. This one is going in the trash in favor of a knock-off or other resolution. Don't buy it!

A bit pricey, but does the trick. Doesn't scratch your iPad Air

    • Written by from SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO

If you're gonna use this often, I suggest getting the black one. The bright orange/red one gets dirty so quickly. Also, the inside flap is hard to clean. Therefore, I returned it and settled for the black one. It's nothing fancy. It does the trick. It's a feeble stand at best. I paired this up with a 3rd party hard case backing. I would choose this paired up with a 3rd party alternative for a protective backing over the full smart cover case (which adds bulk and weight). HOWEVER, the same issue with the smart covers for the iPad 4 remain with this one for the iPad Air. The cover leaves lines where it folds onto your screen. Why wasn't this addressed of fixed by altering the inside lining of the flap? Oh well.

    Absolutely Love it!

    • Written by from Henderson

I received my first IPad for X-mas: the Air. I bought this cover because I liked the light, barely there design and because I'm waiting to buy the Tech21 impact case that works with this cover. I have not been disappointed at all. This cover is amazing! The magnets that attach this cover to the iPad work perfectly and seamlessly. I love the color because it is very different. I also love the way my iPad goes to sleep and wakes up each time I close or open the cover. I'm thrilled with this product. I can't wait until the Tech21 impact case is made for the iPad Air so I can buy it. Last, I love that I can fold this cover to the back of my iPad and hold it flat if I want to or I can position the cover so my iPad stands vertical or horizontal. Thank you for a great product!

I think the cover is fantastic for the iPad Air. No troubles. Looks good. Magnets are strong and hold in place. I like the fact that the cover is not thick and bulky feeling. It's thin yet strong.
