Lower quality should have lower price

The Smart Cover for my iPad 2 was a great product. The Smart Cover for my new iPad Air is a a step down in materials and performance. How about a step down in price to reflect that?

    It's Just Barely OK

    • Written by from Portland

I read some of the other reviews and was hesitant but went to the store to try it out anyway. Turns out the demo they gave me was actually an older generation and now that I'm home I don't think the iPad air cover is quite as good. The older generation had 4 folds which seemed to inherently stay in the triangle better. The magnet on the newer one does also seem to be weaker, as commented by others. It's barely strong enough to even keep the cover closed. These two things mean that it's a borderline failure on functionality.

I will say that I'm happy with the materials and quality. I also like how it attaches to the iPad better than previous generations.

Overall, it seems quite overpriced for something that is just barely ok. There's a good chance this one is heading back to the store.

Not as good as the old one

    • Written by from Lake Forest

I bought smart cover for the ipad 3 and ipad 4 and loved it. So naturally bought it for the air as well. This one the cover slides around a lot and it's easy to slide it and then accidentally open it and exposing the screen. The 3 section is also not as useful as the 4 section. I returned it since I don't trust it to protect my screen it's extra weight.

    Collects dirt

    • Written by from Cleveland

I bout the black cover, after having the dark get on my iPad 3 and loved it. But the new cover is brushed finished which means it collects dirt. It appears that apple did not learn anything from the original iPad cover... it needs constant cleaning. The cover should either have been pure vinyl or leather. This the only product that apple produces that I am unhappy with.

Worse than iPad 2 Smart Cover

Does not lie flush on the screen when closed. I will return it and search for a third party alternative.

Much worse than original Smart Cover

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air. The new covers are worse in every way. The three panels instead of four causes the cover to be less stable when in its stand position, and the cover did not stay on the iPad very well and shifted back and forth, leaving parts of the screen exposed. I was also disappointed at the lack of a leather option. I returned the new Smart Cover and will be looking for a different option.

The previous iPad Smart Cover was perfectly fine. This one not so much. Seems like since they completely covered up the magnet that connects it to the iPad its not as stable. I falls off all the time and I certainly can't use it on my lap because it always folds out. They really didn't think this one thru. Will probably return it and look for alternatives. Especially at a $39 price point. Not good. Feels very cheap

A big step back as a keyboard stand

    • Written by from Portland

Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo and video but the connection part is so unstable now that typing experience just got much much worse, it's considerably more unstable that I find it annoying typing on a constantly shaking surface.
