    Poor design, a step back

    • Written by from New York

Yeah, this is a sadly cheap-feeling product. As many others have noticed, it doesn't fit snugly, it doesn't work well as a stand, and the material itself feels much cheaper than the earlier models. Partly, this is because the iPad Air is just a bit a narrower, so they were presumably forced to eliminate one of the four original folding panels. But it's hard to see how they could have gone so badly wrong here. You want this thing to protect your iPad, but it's almost more of a hazard than a help. The first time I used it as a stand, it nearly fell off the table three times! That never happened with the older ones.

    Huge disappointment

    • Written by from Los angeles

Don't waste your money. This piece of junk doesn't work. The stand is constantly falling down. The 3 vs 4 panel is sleeker, but so flimsy don't bother using the stand. If I move the stand at all when in use it completely falls down. The 3 panel doesn't snap solidly into place, it merely rests on a seam...and is only slightly magnetized. It doesn't work. Piece of junk.

It has issues standing up on its own. Apple just continues to go downhill, it is like, they never even tested this after they created it.

    Leaves marks on screen

    • Written by from Stoney Creek

I bought this cover to protect my screen, but because of it's three fold design, it leaves two long vertical marks on my screen. Not happy with this at all.

Not flimsy, but could be better

    • Written by from Philadelphia

First of all, it is unfair to claim the new tri-fold design to be unstable: fold it with the inner (the side that is in contact with your screen) out and it works just fine.

Secondly, it is quite a pity to no longer have leather version of smart case available for iPad Air :(

Last but not least, speaking from an engineering perspective, iPad Air's smart case cannot be four-fold for the simple reason that given its reduced width, a four-fold case won't be providing support at a proper height as the old one - think about it yourself. But honestly, apple should have thought of a better solution than just turning it tri-fold.

    3 stars.

Perfect compliment to your iPad Air !!!! From very critical user...

    • Written by from Mesa

This is an apple cover made for an apple product.
    Written by JB from Mesa
Being very critical about what to put on my iPads , this cover is perfect for what it's designed to do..... Cover the iPad. It's lightweight compliments the air perfectly. It's not meant to be bullet proof, waterproof or anything else. If you want that buy otter box or whatever bulky case is popular. Do it. This is simplistic for a reason. The reason you bought an "air" in the first place. I rock a clear skin on the back. Not a back case but a cheap clear skin I got online. And this cover isn't going to stand upright, laid down or whatever like a bulky, heavy aftermarket cover. All the layouts it is designed for meets all expectations. Don't let over critical or overprotection ruin the simplistic experience.... Will it get dirty.. Yeah.. So wash your hands. Treat your device the way you want to. Bulky and weighed down so you can throw it off your balcony ! Or in your home or workplace where this product is meant for ,where you're not spilling beer or your dog chews on it.... AND WHEN I FOLD MINE TO THE BACK, the magnets DO HOLD IT FLUSH TO THE BACK. Again, very critical, but very happy with cover..... And by the way, I don't put some POS case on my iPhone. These products are designed to look and feel very premier.. And they are.... Happy with cover. Happy not over cluttering and letting what Apple does best. Design and usability. P.s.
Not a super fanboy... Just someone who understands quality. You get what you pay for.. And I don't work for free. Oh, and my cover is BLACK.

    iPad Air Smart Cover

    • Written by from highlands ranch

What happened to quality, not sure what Apple was thinking. I had an iPad 2 with the leather smart cover, great quality and a feel that it was worthy of my $700 iPad, great to drag into a business meeting. Bought an iPad air, wanted to buy another leather cover, looks more professional, but ah the feeling of cheap flimsy polyurethane. Don't waist your money.

Um folks, you do realize that you have to fold the Smart Cover with the microfiber side out, right? Those who are criticizing the design because it collapses too easily when used as a stand are obviously folding it the opposite (wrong) way. I also noticed mention of the cover not lining up correctly, exposing part of the screen when closed. That would be because it has been attached upside-down, with the microfiber side away from the screen (when closed). The magnets don't line up correctly when you try to attach it the wrong way which causes the cover to shift to one side.

Used as intended, this version of the Smart Cover is really pretty much perfect. Folded correctly, it is actually just as strong as the covers for previous generation iPads, and its magnetic attachment to the iPad itself is even stronger than before. I have used it as a typing stand and as a vertical stand for watching video and it is extremely solid in both orientations.

So don't be put off by the "user-error"-induced negative reviews. Buy with confidence assured that this cover is just as sturdy (and then some) as previous versions.

The old four fold Smart Cover was very good and the new three fold iPad air cover is rubbish. I expect Apple to improve product not make them worse!

The Smart Cover for my iPad 2 was a great product. The Smart Cover for my new iPad Air is a a step down in materials and performance. How about a step down in price to reflect that?

It's ok but nothing compared to iPad 2 leather cover.

    • Written by from Idaho Falls

I love my leather iPad 2 cover. The poly air cover just doesn't live up to the stylish leather iPad 2 cover. Why would they change such a beautiful design for something so cheap feeling. The functionality of the new cover does not work as good either. I just don't understand why the new cover would be made worse than the old model.

Very nice cover for iPad Air

    • Written by from Risskov

The three fold design makes it easier to fold the cover and it snaps easily together with the magnets inside the cover. I have used it for several weeks now and I find it at least as good as the previous iPad Smart Cover.

    Unacceptable design

    • Written by from Colorado Springs

Was using my iPad Air this morning, and it fell over flat on the table (again) because the cover can't support the iPad. It does this all the time, except this time, my iPad knocked over a full glass of OJ onto my iPhone and all over the floor. Sometimes I hear my iPad fall over in when it's alone in a room, I don't even need to be using the thing for this cover to fail. This design is unacceptable. I don't just expect better from Apple, I demand it. Do better.

Cover collapses often - very dissatisfied

    • Written by from Saskatoon

Normally a huge Apple fan, I find myself very disappointed with their design of this cover. I used to own an ipad2 with the 4 segment smart cover and it was fantastic. This new cover, designed for the iPad air, being only three segments, cannot be used the same way as the old cover - in that it fails to offer any real support when folded into a stand, and often collapses during use. When folded into a stand, either the main magnet releases from the iPad air or, more commonly, the magnet in the end of the far segment releases from the main magnet that connects to the iPad air, causing the whole assembly to collapse. It gets frustrating after a while, and I'm now going to purchase a cover or case from another company to handle the duty this cover was supposed to look after. While in many other respects this is a good cover, this one design fault is so substantial that I would not recommend that anyone purchase this product.

    Not worth the money!

    • Written by from roswell

I bought the new iPad air, top of the line, and automatically bought the new smart case also. The magnets are not strong enough, it is forever falling over when in view mode. It's fallen off my table many times, luckily it has not broken.

I'll be looking for a new sturdier case.

    Tragic mistake!

    • Written by from Provincetown

Don't buy this cover! I received a new Ipad for Christmas. I needed to buy the cover so I bought this one from Apple. In less than three weeks, the magnetic seal broke four times as I was holding the Ipad. In the worst and most recent case, the IPad fell to the floor and now I have two tong cracks running through the screen. Buy something else, somewhere else....anything that keeps it more secure while in your hands. VERY unhappy.

    Okay, but certainly not outstanding.

    • Written by from Gähwil

The 3-panel design is worse than before, but given the smaller width of the device it seems like a reasonable choice. With 4 panels, each one would be too small for a good angle. I found that it is much more stable, if you fold it with the linen-surface outwards. This way, the edge is burried under the connecting part and it hardly unfolds. It can get more dirty but you'll probably use it on a desk or on your lap. However, there should be a leather option and it should be a little stiffer for this price. When sliding in and out a bag the cover can easily move.

    Great Product

    • Written by from Houston

I'm not sure why other people are complaining about this cover. I had the original Smart Cover for an iPad 2 and after getting this one yesterday, have to say that this new one is superior. It works better as a stand and for typing (very solid for each). It fits perfectly onto the iPad and is very light, which is a must for the iPad Air. I looked into other covers, and while there a lot of cheaper ones out there, they are cheap for a reason. For a great cover that keeps the lightness of the iPad air, you can't beat the Smart Cover.
