    Doesn't come with screen protector

    • Written by from College Place

Don't be fooled by the product description. Yes the case fully closes and protects the screen while not in use but it does not have a screen protector. You'll have to buy one of those separately.

Its really nice and I recommend

    • Written by from CHICAGO

I really do like it. Although it is magnetized and doesn't cover the back, I paired it with a clear plastic back cover and it worked out super well. Iike the fact that it does double as a stand for the Ipad and does really work well. It does show stains on front when you don't have super clean hands but they wipe off after a good cleaning. Not a bad magnetized cover, and it shuts your ipad down when you close it up. I would recommend it vs getting an imitation.

    Nice case but....

    • Written by from Charlotte

The case fits very well on my iPad Air. But like the other reviews the trifold design could be better. Also not sure that the case is real leather; but it could be. I expected more for $79.99.

Almost but came up a little short.....

    • Written by from Beaver Dam

When looking at cases for my iPad Air, I first checked out the 3rd party. From what I have seen, nothing seems to fit or look decent. So I went for the red smart case. I have the black iPad, so the red case looks nice. It fits very well and looks very much part of the iPad. Unlike some of the 3rd party cases that has that bulky look. I noticed you have to be careful when having your iPad upright with the cover folded. It is possible to have it sturdy but you have to take your time on double checking the folds as it takes some practice. One of the two things I don't like about the case is the texture. It's a little bit on the slippery side while holding. If apple made it with a softer leather like texture, that would be perfect! My other major gripe is the price! $79.99 seems way too much. It was hard taking this out of the box and using this case right after forking over that kind of money!! I would say this case is worth $39.99. But after having it for a week, it looks nice laying on my coffee table in my living room. Not only it offers good protection, it looks good for a decorative piece.

    Can be good

    • Written by from Anahola

I returned my first two smart cases after having issues with vertical stand instability (folding cover kept collapsing) and the cover not folding flat behind the case. I thought I would try one more smart case because I liked the light weight. The case I have now is stable in the vertical position (the magnet holds the folding cover in place in the vertical stand position, it did not on my first cover) and the cover easily folds flat behind the case. The light weight and fit of this case are fantastic. I can recommend this case if you can find one that is not defective.

Lovely material, some minor but irritating flaws

    • Written by from Flanders

It's a nice enough case with pros and cons. Overall, I like it.

    On the down side:
Audio hole is too small (this is really a problem with several headphones).
Difficult or impossible to use the stand in portrait orientation.
Magnets not always strong enough to hold it in the rolled up configuration.
Flap tries hard to block the camera.

    On the plus side:
Smooth grippy lovely material. Doesn't quite feel like just leather, seems a little technical, a little engineered, but it feels great. I've had the black for 5 months now, and use it every day. It picks up some debris on occasion, but is easily cleaned by brushing. Finger oils haven't had much effect, if perhaps improved the character a little (mostly no change). There has been no color loss.
    It's thin and light.
It protects the iPad well on all sides. It's not an Otter Box, but few need that. It has enough of a lip to protect the screen when laid face down on a smooth surface, but small enough to not get in the way of typing or interfering with any other touch activities.

In the end, though, it's the size of the headphone hole that I find most annoying, fitting less than half of the headphones I've tried. But this isn't enough affect the overall goodness of the nice feeling protector of the iPad.

    Great Case

    • Written by from Eagle Mountain

As others have mentioned the movie stand function is flawed either because the magnets are too weak or because three folding sections don't work as well as four (that previous Apple cases had).

If you're purchasing it primarily for protection however, I doubt you'll find anything with a superior fit/finish for the same price point. I had a Speck FitFolio case (which I liked) for my iPad mini and this case is far better. The speck case is half the price but it's also made of vegan (synthetic) leather. Apple's case is made of aniline (real) leather. You get what you pay for. Overall a great case.

    Great Case for iPad Air

    • Written by from Gahanna

In spite of a lot of negative reviews, I decided to get the smart case. Something redesigned for the iPad Air and not appropriated from what a third party sold on the previous iPads. I couldn't be happier. Searching around, I can honestly say that as of January 10, I could not find a substantive alternative that provided what the Smartcase does:

    Magnet Closure
Full coverage - front and back (and edge) protection
    Slim form factor
    Elegant fit and finish

I knock it down a star because I think 80 dollars is a lot to drop after getting an iPad, and a little much for a case, but I think the product stands on it's own. I have not had the same issue others have had getting the cover to support the iPad correctly. People must have trouble making triangles ;).

If you appreciate what Apple provides and like the Kool-Aid, you'll be happy you bought this case.

Great ergonomics, basic functionality, high price

    • Written by from Alamo

I've had an Ipad since they came out in 2010 and after much research bought the original Apple case. Three years later, that case has a lot of mileage on it and despite my initial concerns about the longevity of the mystery material its made of and the seams/edge design, it literally looks like new.

Now we just purchased an Ipad Air and again after looking at the alternatives went with the leather version of the Apple Smart Case. While there are other nice cover options, they are not as sleek and basically just bulk up this beautiful design, like putting a puffy raincoat on a supermodel.

The Smart Case leather feels great in your hands and the cover operates smoothly.

One concern is that the cover material does not provide as much dampening as the original cover because of its sleeker design. Don't know if anything but an obnoxious rubber raincoat (e.g.otterbox) could really protect the Air from a common fall. Definitely think worth augmenting with the AppleCare+ warranty upgrade.

After reading other reviews I was worried about the top cover not laying flat but it stays closed and really lays down pretty good--I can't notice any issue with it.

The only lifecycle issue I could possible see is the hinge seam sticks out about 1/4 inch from the case and the unsupported material in this area may wear or be subject to damage.

The downside is price: $79 is pretty steep considering where its made. You could go with the non-leather case for less $$ and get the same functionality. If the material is the same mystery material as the original Ipad case it has great wearability.

    Pretty good!

    • Written by

This black leather case is a great addition to my new silver iPad Air.

Looking at this case, it seems durable... For light wear and tear. It's slim, and lightweight. Although, when standing the case upright, the magnetic power for holding the cover/stand in place is quite weak. As well as the magnet holding the cover to the case itself. I also noticed a little something about the case, unlike the smart case for the older generation iPad, little things like the silver details around the volume buttons and the switch are gone.

I do like the dual functionality of the whole case itself, I just wish that the stand wouldn't collapse with just one tap of your finger.

    Thank you!

Case is nice and stable if you use it correctly

    • Written by from Lake Worth

I understand all of the comments about the stability, but the truth is if you fold the cover properly so that the magnet engages, it is much more stable than previous Smart Covers. Try it!

I agree that black is the only practical color although I love the looks of the tan natural leather.

Simply, good protective casing for daily use and travel

    • Written by from Utrecht

I first bought the cover - only covering the screen. See my review of that (1 star) - cover fell of when I was walking with the iPad, ipad slipped out of my hands onto the hardwood floor, screen cracked.

The cover of course is a tiny bit thicker, but only just. You can easily travel with it (back protected as well) and I can't imagine the iPad Air falling out by accident.

    Feels great fit okay?

    • Written by from Long beach

I love the look a feel of the smart case. The black smart case over the black/gray ipad air looks great as well. The cases fit is where I have an issue. When I close the case I have a gap of space on the left side from top to bottom, which leaves a space between the screen and the smart cover. I will return it to apple to see if it is only this case or just how the case fits? Is it enough of an issue to return it and go with different case... No, it works and I love the feel and I will keep it. However; apple is about perfection and it is disappointing to a degree. Apple could have made the same back with a space on the left side to fit the smart cover and could have sold it as a set or just back or front cover... It would fit better this way. It is the non-apple type hinge that is the issue at least on my cover. Again I still love the look, fit and function and will keep the smart case as it is the best option on the market.

    Not terribly impressed.

    • Written by from Omaha

I ordered the case because I wanted total coverage for my iPad air. It was anticipated the cover would serve as a stand. Unfortunately, the stand collapses easily. As a cover and case, this is lovely. As a stand, not so much.

    Premium price, but exceptional quality.

    • Written by from DALTON

Full disclosure: I am writing this review having used the iPad Air Smart Case(Black) for one week.

The case is made out of a quality aniline dyed leather and feels considerably solid. The iPad snaps into place VERY firmly, to the point that it is initially somewhat difficult to remove the iPad from the case. After inserting and removing the iPad a few times, you'll get a feel for the best method of removal. Time will tell if the leather holds up or gets discolored with use. I assume the black model will probably last longer in this respect. The front folds up exactly like a Smart Cover, although compared to the previous Smart Cover (which had 4 sections compared to 3 on the current cover) it provides less support. The price is rather steep, but this case will please anyone looking for an professional or elegant solution to protecting their iPad Air.

    Good case

    • Written by from Poughkeepsie

This is a terrific looking case, bought the black one for my black iPad air.
The only reason I am giving this 4 vs 5 stars is due to the fact, when using the cover to prop the iPad up on a table, I find the angle a bit to low. But everything else about this cases, is so much better then the after market cases, makes that a minor issue
If you spend lots of time without an external KB, typing documents, this case may not be for you, the majority of the time, my device is in my lap and not a table,
Smart Cover works better then any after market I owned for the prior iPad
Worth the cost in my opinion, a bit over priced, but you get what you pay for.
The feel is buttery and rich, and the iPad just drops in, a PERFECT fit, unlike some other
cases I have used in the past for prior models

    Nice case with one issue.

    • Written by from Brooklyn

Beautiful case with integrated smart cover. Fits iPad Air nicely and allows easy access to all control buttons and ports. I have one issue with it: with the iPad Air in the case, the lightning connector does not attach securely, it slips off. I have to remove the iPad Air from the case in order to securely attach it to the lightning connector for syncing and charging. Surprised that this was not checked before the product was released. This was not an issue for prior Apple iPad cases.

    Very Good Case

    • Written by from DYER

This is a beautiful, well designed case that works as advertised. It's very sleek, fits way better than the older generation smart case, feels great in-hand, and is discreet. What's not to like? The price is a bit too high. (At $59 I'd give it 5 Stars)
On any desk, table or flat surface it holds the device admirably. The typing position is very rock solid once you learn how to engage the magnets. For those wanting to prop up the device in bed, get a bulkier case designed for that purpose. Just realize you'll lose a lot of the thin, light design of the air. The device is light enough to use without propping up in many settings.
Every case involves trade-offs. Those who use the iPad for work, reading, and presenting will like this case.

Decent case, but awkward to use the iPad for long periods

    • Written by from Albuquerque

This smart case is a little thicker than the smart cover I was used to with my iPad3. The old poly smart cover folded back easily. This smart case, while relatively low profile, fold back awkwardly and results in the iPad being bulky to use for long periods. You either have to hold on to three layers of folded cover, or you can hold onto two layers and let the third dangle. Not an ideal case if you like your iPad to be as close to naked as possible. But it is a good case if you absolutely must have a cover. The leather doe snot feel top grade and the iPad does not stand as well as the poly iPad cover, but it is overall functional, good-looking, and fairly thin. As a reference, the iPad air w/smart case is just a little thicker than my old iPad 3 setup with ghost armor on the back and a poly smart case on top. If I get up enough nerve, I may go with ghost armor top and bottom, no case. :o

    Very Pleased

    • Written by from ELK GROVE

The fit is great and it appears that it will protect very well when traveling. What I like most is that it is very slim and light. Aesthetically the leather seams flat or dull however, it feels fine but if it looked a little richer I would have given it five stars. It does prop up better than my Targus for my iPad 3 and not nearly as bulky. For the reviews that state that the magnet is too week in landscape, rotate the iPad 180.
