    Great case!

    • Written by from Antwerpen

Brought a black smart case for my iPad air at the apple store. I like it a lot and I don't get what people are complaining about. It works great as a stand, protects the iPad... It just does what it needs to do. Maybe the complainers don't know how to use the stand/case? Or do they have the wrong case?

There is one thing though: $79 is pretty expensive for paper board and a little leather. But hey, if the product does what it does and there is nothing else that's better at it...

Not what I expect from Apple

    • Written by from Victoria

I bought a Red smartcase at the same time I ordered my iPad Air. Firstly it is more orange than red, not a huge problem but still. Secondly the case is almost impossible to remove which can be a good thing but not when the case will not allow my headphones to fit into the jack, the case must be partially removed. Also the front of the case will not lay flat against the iPad air so the lock feature does not work unless you push it down. However it still will not lay flat. Will be returning the case. Fairly poor design for $90 Cdn.

    Beware of Bad Reviews

    • Written by from Lake Orion

First off, this product is an amazing one at least. The leather is quality, the magnets are strong, the feel is amazing, and there is just enough wiggle room so it fits securely but not too tight.

BEWARE OF BAD REVIEWERS!!!! This product works EXACTLY how it is supposed to. Those giving it bad reviews don't like the product because it is not for them and they give it a bad review. The magnets hold up in both positions and anyone who says otherwise isn't using it right. It fits snug, good viewing angles, and 3 panel system makes for quicker easier set-up. The cover moves around a little, but how else are you supposed to get it off if there is no lip hanging off. We'll designed and thought out. Simply amazing.

    Nice Looking but terrible function

    • Written by from Charlotte

The top cover doesn't lay flat but more importantly the triangle doesn't support the weight of the iPad. It seems as if the magnets are way to weak so any pressure on the iPad causes the triangle to come apart and the iPad to fall over. It almost seems as if Apple didn't test the functionality of the case before deciding to sell it. Don't buy this case!

Two flaws, one of them major

    • Written by from Bellevue

Beautiful case, but two flaws that really make it useless.

First, the big flaw that makes the case useless. It won't stand by itself. Fold up the cover, stand the iPad Air up, and the "wedge" folds in on itself, causing the iPad to fall. If it does stand by itself, if you try to use the iPad at all, it falls. You must still hold the iPad.

Second, when closed, the cover part doesn't lay flat. The hinge edge stands about 1/8 inch above the screen, not completely sealing off the screen, and making it very easy to accidentally open the cover. Things may barely catch the edge, and the cover open up from the hinge side.

    Useless case. $80 gone.

Great Case/Cover...if you use it right

    • Written by from Austin

There are a few reviews here and elsewhere that say the iPad will fall over when using the stand in either the Keyboard Stand or the Movie Stand.
This is true only if you put the finished leather facing down (touching the table/desk), this is much more slick than the microfiber inner lining and it will fall very easy.
If you make the stand with the microfiber facing down (touching the table/desk) it will have a much tougher time falling if it ever does since its not as slick as the leather.
Try this way out and you will see that the stand is much more stable and you also will not scratch your nice leather.

I'm very satisfied with the Smart case now and its looks quite nice as well.

Covers and protects well. Does stand well.

    • Written by from CHICO

I'm less than impressed with this cover. It supplies ample protection and has a nice soft interior but the cover (near the hinge) doesn't close flat and the tri-fold style of screen cover doesn't hold the ipad as well. It will often collapse while I have it on my lap or even on a table. It seems the fourth fold that was removed on the smart cover redesign really added some stability. I also noticed that when holding the ipad with the cover in a triangle shape (portrait) it is a little too large to hold comfortably.

    Pro- Covers well. Soft interior.

Cons- Does not work as a stand. Holding ipad in portrait with smart cover in a triangle isn't comfortable.

I will continue to use this cover until I can find one better.

    Poor Design

    • Written by from Washington

The case feels solid and yet soft, just like the Smart Cases for previous generation iPads. While it may not provide much impact protection, I have no doubt that it will protect the iPad from scuffs and scratches.

I noticed immediately that the front cover doesn't lay flat across the screen of the iPad when closed. The fabric hinge is too stiff, and without the folding metal origami of the previous Smart Covers, which I am sure added weight, the cover doesn't seem to fit quite as it should.

This is odd considering Apple's typical attention to detail, but when the cover folds into a stand the situation gets worse. It appears that while the previous generation cases and covers used two sets of flat magnets to hold the the folding pieces together, the newest case only has a set of small magnets in the very tip of the cover.

The larger flat magnets in the previous cover held the whole surface of the cover against itself when you folded it back, increasing friction between them. This elegant design held a heavier iPad steady while the user pushed and swiped at the screen using the weight of the device as a further means to push the case onto itself and holding everything fast.

The new case only has weak magnets at the very tip of the cover flap, and if you don't align them very carefully, the iPad will fall flat. Also, the weight of the iPad no longer helps to anchor the cover because of the steep angle, so when you push or swipe at the screen it rocks backwards, sometimes collapsing the cover and causing the device to fall again.

When you consider the simple, brilliant design of the previous Smart Cover/ Case this newest case is designed in a shoddy manner inconsistent with its $90 price tag.

What we have here is a case where Apple is selling an accessory unworthy of their own product.

Excellent Case for the iPad Air

    • Written by from Murphysboro

While I think the iPad Air feels sturdy enough to withstand some abuse without a case, I carry mine in a bag to work, and take it out frequently to access PDF's, take photos, and send short emails. For my use the Smart Case is perfect.

The case was easy to put on and has a great appearance that will get better with use. The cover folds up nicely, accordion style, when I have it open. The additional weight it adds is barely noticeable to me. I don't use it as a stand too often, but when I do it works as advertised. Some users have complained about the small gap near the left edge of the case and the face of the iPad. It is noticeable, but hardly a problem for me. I expect that it will go away as the hinge gets more broken in.

My only small gripe would be that the cover could be slightly stiffer. Although the magnets are strong enough, it tends to slide around a bit while carrying the iPad. Otherwise, it is a great looking, high-quality case.

    Highly recommended.

Can't use headphones without removing case

    • Written by from Fort Wayne

The case is very sturdy and looks like it would provide great protection for the iPad. However the case is so thick that it's difficult to make the controls such as volume work. You have to push as hard as you can to make the buttons work. I have the Bose noise canceling headphones which are great but I have to remove the iPad from the case (not easy) in order to insert the headphone plug. Poor design,

Nice texture, looks great on white iPad

    • Written by from Atlanta

The brown case looks great on the white iPad air. I agree with the previous reviews about the stand not being as sturdy as possible. I also get irritated when I'm holding the iPad air vertically because the case does not lay flat against the back.

Poor reading angle in both positions

    • Written by from Ottawa

In both orientations this case fails to provide good angles for reading / web browsing. It's either too steep in the upright position, or too shallow in the low typing position. Does apple even test using their cases? I don't understand how they could release something so unintuitive given their design ethic.

    Try again...

    • Written by from White Plains

Like many here, my initial impressions were not great due to the stand being flimsy, but after reading one reviewer try taking it out and putting it back into the case, I did the same. It worked for me as well and I have no idea why. Give it shot and report back.

    Color and material

    • Written by from Alexandria

3/5 durability and color not what I had hoped for

I wish there was a non leather option (as is the cover offering) for those of us who would prefer not to use leather or would like something more durable - and I wish that there was a bright green offered (as there is in the cover offering).

    - wasn't there a synthetic case in green for the last iPad?

    Stay away

    • Written by from San Francisco

The case is worthless. Look at 3rd party covers. I say this as an Apple fan. It is a waste of money. I travel weekly and this case is not functional for airplanes or working remotely. The ipad is not stable.

    Great concept but....

    • Written by from Knoxville

I bought the black smart case looks and feels amazing, but for the $80 price tag this case lacks so much, a magnet in the back would be idea, and the case is utterly useless as a landscape stand the ipad falls over constantly. The front cover also isn't very secure apple needs to work out the bugs on this one

    Change of Original Review

    • Written by from Avon

In my initial review I complained about the instability of the case when using the iPad Air in the upright position ... the case would collapse if touched (even lightly) in the upper half of the screen.

Well, I took the iPad out of the case and then put it back in.. Although I could not see any physical difference before or after this ... BUT NOW THE CASE IS VERY STABLE IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION. I do not know what changed, but now it works as described. (Putting the iPad into the case is a simple pop into the cavity, so I don't know what changed ... the iPad was secure both initially and now).

So now I give it four stars (I would have preferred a less slick texture. It feel like it could easily slip out of my hand).

    Trying hard to love it

    • Written by from East Rockaway

The look and feel of this case is great. I have one in black, it's sleek, it feels amazing in the hand.

The functionality of the case when closed is awesome. It fully protects the iPad Air.

When open it's a different story, the front cover just doesn't lay flat against against the back of the iPad, It's not the end of the world but it really is kind of annoying. I'll probably keep this around but if a better back that's compatible with a smart cover comes along I'm going to try it out.

For $80, they should have added a magnet in the case itself to hold it nice and sturdy.

    Form > Function... Sort of...

    • Written by from Mountain View

Overall, a sharp case that works OK. The case can be a little unstable in landscape mode as it has a tendency to fall backwards. It takes a little fidgeting, but you'll get it!

The leather is very soft and looks great. I'm excited to see how it ages with use. Since it is made from a natural material, there will be surface defects. As such, I had to go through the whole stack to find one that met my picky requirements.

    As good as it gets

    • Written by from ORLEANS

Great product. Honestly. The feel and functionality meet a great product. I was a bit hesitant to spend $89 for it but once I wrapped it around the iPAD, it just felt good. The flap gets nicely closed to the back of the case when its opened. The smooth and soft feel of the suede or Microfiber protects the screen and cleans the screen from constant touching.
