    Don't recommend

    • Written by from Scottsdale

The smart case for the last iPad model was fantastic. This one is a big disappointment. It has a very weak magnet and doesn't stand up well at all. I am very surprised that Apple would release this case. I will say it looks great, but I would not recommend.

    A step backward

    • Written by from BOSTON

I have the 3rd gen ipad Smart Cover, and it's an impressively simple design that works very, very well. The new case for the Air is loaded with issues that are unacceptable for something coming out of Cupertino:
    1. The case protrudes further over the edge than the cover, making it difficult to grasp the cover to open it.
    2. The three-section stand design is absolutely useless compared to the robust four-section design. The new one falls flat, literally. I'm actually surprised. It's like the designers never actually used one.
    3. The cover doesn't lie flush and looks sloppy
    4. The hinge is just a flap of leather and is too stiff to let the ipad stand upright properly. The hinge (an actual hinge) on the 3rd gen cover moves much better. The new one might break in if I weren't returning it tomorrow.

Two stars because the materials are nice and it looks good.

    Weak magnets = Bad stand

    • Written by from Los Alamos

Nice feel, but useless as a stand. The magnets are simply too weak to hold it in position. After trying a paper clamp to keep it from falling over, I've decided that I will be returning it. Hopefully they increase the strength of the magnets in a later version.

    Most frustrating Apple product ever

    • Written by from BAINBRIDGE ISLAND

Suffice it to repeat - This product would never have graced Apple's shelves when Steve Jobs was in control. It is beautiful, protects well, but that's it. Used as a stand, it collapses if you bump, breathe on, or even just walk near your iPad. (Watch someone try to use it on an airplane). It's just too lightweight to hold the iPad for more than a few minutes if you're trying to actually use the iPad. But there is a fix! Grab two medium size Paper Clamps and clamp the Smart Case in the "Stand" position. It works perfectly to make the stand rigid and won't scratch or harm your iPad because the clamp squeezes the raised ridge on the front of the Smart Case and clamps the cover to the back of your iPad. Quick and it's free if you have the clamps available. A wonderful, beautiful case that requires a clunky fix to be useful. Apple should be ashamed.

Steve Jobs would not be proud.

    • Written by from Grand Rapids

The previous version of the Smart Case was much better. The Air Smart Case has a poor color selection. The magnets are not strong enough to keep the cover in place when using the iPad. For $79 Apple should be ashamed. Do not buy. I'll be returning mine.

    Everything looks perfect to me....

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

I bought this brown Smart case on December 5, 2013 from Apple store. To be honest, I was kinda worried about some comments about the the cover ... can't stay flat or the stand can't stand still …etc.. But guess what, I don't see those problems... Everything looks or works perfectly fine to me when I put my iPad Air into the case. No hassle at all. The buttons on the side work fine too.

Not sure if Apple has already redesigned the case based on people's complaint or I am just lucky ? I did notice the color and the texture of the leather are slightly different so I’d suggest that you go to Apple store to pick the best one. If you don’t like it, you can return it in 14 days anyway… Take it easy ;)

    why oh why?

    • Written by from Aberdeen

I LOVED my smart cover for my iPad 2 with the three folds. This one isn't nearly as stable and I just don't see the reason for changing. I'm sure the narrower sides are why which also make the iPad itself less convenient to hold in some respects too. Different doesn't make something better. Let's improve things as we go.

    Just ok

    • Written by from Missouri ciy

The stand provides good protection, but the stand is weak. Furthermore, placing in a position to type, is difficult to maintain. The slightest pressure while typing causes it to collapse. I just purchased 4 days ago, and I travel extensively, often typing out emails and other correspondence during flights. Although I spent nearly $ 80 including tax, it will have to be a loss, because I must get another case. Looks nice, but I would not recommend.

Apple can do better for 80 bucks

    • Written by from BURLINGTON

I read the tepid reviews but went ahead and bought one. The reviews were accurate.
PRO's - clean fit, light, easy turn on off

CON's - 1. the charger doesn't fit! if you force it it 'might' stay now and then
    2. the headphone jack - other than the apple headset does not fit at all.

So i thought do i cut the case to make it work? For 80 dollars i returned the case.
The pad is amazing, it needs a light, smart case, but this is not it.

Not as good as previous cases...

    • Written by from Toa Alta

It feels great. It is very light, and looks good. I think they need to improve the front cover, it does not lay flat when it's closed. Also is not good when is used as a stand. I don't use it because it does not feel secure. Overall, looks good, feels great, not as good as previous models.

    Ipad doesn't sleep when close

    • Written by from LAS VEGAS

I bought this cover to match my new IPhone 5s. It did sleep when I closed it during the first week but after a month of use, (I'm right here in New Zealand using this as my camera since I left my nikon in the airport), it doesn't automatically turns off anymore??? I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. I may have to go back to the store and ask them. Really love it though except for that part. I love the feel of the cover and protection, but the same cover of my IPhone got cut when my phone accidentally dropped, it did protect my phone from the scratch though! I read about the reviews where it doesn't fold flat but no one mentioned this concern I have. I'm just wondering why???

    not worth it.

    • Written by from Burlingame

Feels cheap and it doesn't want to stand on its side.
The quality feels very flimsy for a 80 buck "Premium" Apple product. I bought the 70 dollar leather smart cover for my iPad2 when it came out. A slimy marketing plan on Apple's part, but I went with it cause I needed something and it was a gift (The "cool" colors were leather, puke green, baby blue were not). The cover at least had a rugged quality feel to it, this new one feels like the cheap leather you find on cheap leather furniture or clothes.

Its almost Apple is laughing at us to show how we will buy anything they put their name on and "believe" it to be worth it.

I'm guessing they will come out with their neoprene versions after the holidays.

    Good, not great

    • Written by from Long Beach

I got the case and was impressed by the feel, quality, and fit of it for my iPad air. However, the typing position isn't great - it's a little too low and doesn't feel super secure. The movie position is more secure but only good for viewing applications. I also didn't like that I was forced to buy a leather case for almost $100 when previous generations have offered the polyurethane option for the wrap around case. Also, in the closed position it leaves "fingerprints" on the screen.

    Great case!

    • Written by from Albuquerque

It fits perfectly without adding much weight. I like the feel (and the smell) of it. Besides I don't have any problems standing the iPad in position. This case does exactly what it is supposed to do as it is explained on the back of the box. It is a little expensive but I'm really glad I bought it!

    Provides Good (Not Great) Protection.

    • Written by from McKinney

Case is handsome and provides good exterior protection from scratches but questionable (at best) drop protection. Additionally, if you plan on using other than Apple earbuds for private listening, check that your earphone plug will fit through hole in case. My Etymotic ER-4P earphones do not.

    Very disappointing

    • Written by from Jericho

You would think, considering the relatively high price, that this would be a really nice case for the iPad Air. It's not. Although the case is said to be made of leather, it actually looks and feels more like rubber or vinyl. It attaches snugly to the the outside edge of the iPad, similar to the way a bumper case attaches to an iPhone. While the case is very light weight, which is a plus, it covers over both the on/off and the volume buttons on the iPad with its own built-in buttons, again similar to the way plastic bumpers cover the buttons on an iPhone. This makes the buttons less responsive to the touch and a bit more difficult to use. But what's worse is the very small opening for the lock rotation/mute switch, which makes accessing the switch quite difficult. Bottom line: there are much better designed cases out there for the iPad Air at a fraction of the cost of this one.

    I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up!

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I'm an avid Apple fan who has been consistently drawn to the company's products because of their quality and ease of use. My first of more than 30 computers was the original MacPlus, and my most recent is an iPad Air. The leather case I purchased with my iPad Air is a great cover. However, as a stand it is the worst product Apple product I've ever owned. Heck, my original iPad came with a case that was a far superior stand device than this overpriced horrible excuse for a stand I'm using now. I use an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and still the iPad won't stay up. Ugh! I miss Steve Jobs.

    Nice case, bad stand

    • Written by from Sarver

$80 and does not function very well as a stand in any position. 3 stars because I love the case itself, thin, light, nice! for $40 it is a great case, for $80 as a case and a stand, forget about it!
