Will not work with any case

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

I was pleased to see that Apple has finally provided a dock for the 5 series iPhones, but was very disappointed in this product. It will not work with any case on the phone, even that provided by Apple. I am sending it back.

Must have accessory for the home and office

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

Works great for sync and charging. High quality product with a stable base.

My only complaint would be that because the headphone jack is at the bottom of the phone, listening to music using headphones can only be done by plugging in the Line Out port in the back. Doing this results in a set audio volume level. I tried to adjust the volume using the Apple earpod volume control, the volume buttons on the side of the iphone and the volume scroll bar on iTunes app and none of them did anything. Not that big of an issue because the Lightning charger doesn't take long to fully charge my phone anyway.

Other than that, it is a clean, polished accessory that looks great on my work desk and at home.

    Cool Looking, less Function

    • Written by from Springfield

It looks great! It has a nice grip patch on the bottom to keep it from sliding around. It has an audio out port for your speaker system. It is nice to have your phone sitting up on your desk so you can see alerts quickly. It is also a fairly good angle for FaceTime.

However, it takes a good amount of force to get the two together/apart. It isn't enough by any means to be damaging, but it just feels really snug. You have to be sure to line up the connector exactly. It takes two hands to put it together/apart, and i frequently just pick it up. It isn't the drop it in / grab and go solution I was expecting. However, it is about the same difficulty as plugging in the regular charger.

Finally, you can't adjust the audio out level for the back port, and the headphone port is on the bottom. Really, you can't use this dock with headphones.

    Overall, fancy looking, no function.

Design flaw? Is there a fix?

    • Written by

Apple has designed stunning new cases and accessories to be used with the 5c and 5s but surely we cannot be expected to take the case off the phone every time we put it in the dock?
I can't use this dock because the Apple 5 c case fits so snugly that it is too time consuming to remove it and to put the phone it in the dock. I also have a lightening to 30 pin Apple adapter in my car to pair to Bluetooth and it does not work with the case on.
This seems to be a major design flaw. Apple has come up with a complete solution of attractive accessories and they should all work seamlessly together. These docks and adapters were designed for people that do not use cases. I wish there was a fix.

Don't buy if you have a case!

    • Written by from San Francisco

Purchased the lovely yellow case for the iPhone 5s and low and behold, it doesn't fit into the dock. Shish! Returning it now. Hope they make a dock that fits that nice leather case. Darn engineers.

Does not charge when you need it most.

    • Written by from San Francisco

Does not charge the phone when using this dock with a 30-pin to lightning adapter connected to a third-party speaker (Yamaha), HOWEVER one CAN charge the phone eliminating the dock and using the 30-pin to lightning adapter directly between the phone and speaker?! What gives apple? Why make this so difficult for consumers?!?

Not to mention... I mean, NOT TO MENTION, why would you not include a cable that costs less than $1 to make with the docking station? Are you trying to upset consumers? What marketing genius got promoted from this idea?

Lastly, I was also disturbed with the design requiring that I remove the case to fit the phone in the dock. It would have been useful to add flexibility by making the space wider and including a spacing adapter in the docking kit. Not that hard to figure out...

    Returning mine tomorrow.

    Horrible design but fits 5-5S

    • Written by from columbus

OK, first I took the plunge and purchased the 5C dock to go with my new 5S, reason being because I knew it was a little larger than the actual 5S dock, obviously wanted to see if the 5S with a slim case would fit. However like all previous reviews for both docs, NO CASE can be on the phone for it to fit in the dock.

Second the dock is quite cheap, like a piece of thin plastic and very un-apple like, not worth $29.99 so I returned it.

Although Apple makes great hardware and IOS, their accessory line is not so great. I am not quite sure who is designing these docs or accessories but they need to take a few tips from Twelvesouth.

Not usable if you have any sort of case on your phone

    • Written by from Toronto

It's a nice, solid docking station. But I can't use it since it doesn't work with even the official, Apple case. Personally, I'd rather have a case in case I drop the phone.

Great try... but needs a redesign

    • Written by from Andover

So Apple hasn't had a doc that they cell for any of their phones since the iPhone 4. So when I saw this I thought it would be perfect for the desk next to the computer because it will be upright and a lot easier to use / read the phone. It is in fact great for that but Apple this time got the design wrong. With the new functionality of the home key on the 5s this dock is no good. Even without a case the doc covers up some of the home button making it a lot more difficult to use and awkward to unlock it with a finger print. Unfortunately I will be returning this Apple product which I can honestly say I don't think I have ever done. Better luck next time Apple, I am going to try out a couple of other companies doc's because it seems that with those the phone sits flush with them and doesn't cover up the home key.

    Expected More

    • Written by from Farmingdale

    The Pros:
    - Well made
    - Sexy looking
    - Simple design

    The Cons:
    - Can't control audio from line out. Not designed to be used with headphones, designed for hooking up to a receiver or pre-amp.
    - Can't work with your Apple made iPhone case.

    Conclusion:
    - If you are using your iPhone 5 (or 5S) naked (i.e. no case) and don't care about plugging in your headphones then this is for you otherwise save your $29

If you have an Apple Skin (I am sure same with a non-apple skin) this dock will not work. Which is amazing in itself in a really really bad way.

    Looks great, works great.

    • Written by from Houston

By this point everyone should know that these docks only work with the phone "naked", without a case. If you're the type that keeps your phone in a sleeve/pouch (i.e. Colcasac), then this dock works great. I only wish Apple would go back to the 3G/3GS style docks. Those looked better.

    Too skimpy

    • Written by from Brooklyn

5C Dock is not what I expected. Have one for my Gen. 4 iPod and its great.
This one partially covers home button. Also the base is too shallow (only 1.5 inches) so phone easily tips over. iPod dock is 2.75 inches deep so can't be tipped over.
Cannot remove phone from dock without using two hands.

The iPhone 5c Dock does not allow the phone to be charged with case attached. Also, if the case is removed, you have to constantly adjust in order for it to begin to charge. This is not a good product!

    Who is this possibly for?

    • Written by from San Carlos

It doesn't work if any case is in place, even the Apple made 5c case. Requires 2 hands to remove it from the stand. If you're one of the 73 people who use their phone without a case, then I suppose this is marginally useful as an desk sync or external audio device connection.

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

Had the dock with my iPhone 4 and loved it. Just upgraded to a 5c and got the dock for it and love it as well. I don't have and nor have I used cases so it works great for me. It does what it says. Charges your phone and has an audio output for stereos etc.

    Will damage your iPhone

    • Written by from Saddle Brook

First I was so happy when apple came out with a dock for the iPhone 5/5S. I used the dock only a few times. Not that the home button is partially covered so it's a little difficult to operate the phone while docked but this dock have also scratch my phone while using the dock. The back and the bottom. When I went to the apple store they told me I dropped my iPhone and that's why is damaged. It is impossible to happened form the dock. I never dropped my phone in my life.
