    Didn't Last

    • Written by from KENSINGTON

I bought this and within a few months it got hard to get my iPhone 5 to sit properly in the cradle so that it would charge. I had had a dock for the original iPod which lasted for years. This was a big disappointment. I went back to just using the original cable and threw this dock into the trash.

I bought this at the same time as my 5S from the Irvine Apple Store on the day the 5S went on sale. I loved my Apple dock while I had my 4S, so I had to get it for my 5S. It worked fine - as I do not use a case (thanks to AppleCare+), until last night. Inserted my phone and nope tone. I made sure it was seated all the way, and the cable on the back was connected. Still no charging. I changed the lightning cable and that did not change anything. Looks like I'll have to take it back to the Apple Store. The only thing I would change about the dock, is there should be a cut out for the home button. Once its in and charging, you can not do a finger scan due to the dock blocking the home button. Other than that it works as its supposed to...

    Apple could have done better

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

Good dock overall but any surprises are probably on the negative side.
    - The Home button is somewhat covered (bottom 5% of the bottom only, yet still not super easy to use)
    - The accessory only works with "powered" speakers... so it won't work with the default apple headphones for example if you want to have the iphone docked on your desk and listen to music/take calls through the "line out" connection.

    Works Great!

    • Written by from Lawton

It's unfortunate that Apple doesn't have two review categories: one for people who purchased the product after reading the specifications and one for those who purchased a product HOPING that it works the way they want it to.

With that said, if you keep your phone in a case and you do not want to remove the case to dock your phone, then DO NOT purchase this product, it is incompatible with any case, Apple designed or third party. Consider other solutions. My iHome which sits on my nightstand, for example, is designed in such a way that it would work with many cases.

If you are one of those brave souls who does not use a case, and you want a dock to keep you phone on your desk or nightstand, with the ability to charge it or play music out of it, then this is an elegant solution for you.

I am giving this 5 stars in an attempt to balance out the negative reviews, however, all said and done this is a 4 star product to me. There are two downsides that I've encountered so far which have been noted by many other reviewers: first, the audio port does not support a microphone, meaning that this dock will not work for phone calls with wired headphones or any other means. Secondly, it is more difficult to use the Touch ID while it is in the dock. It is possible, but I find myself just punching in my pin versus bothering with it.

Good for charging or sync....if no case. Don't expect to use headphones.

    • Written by from Needham

Looks good. However, I heartily wish I hadn't bought it.

Pro: holds a iPhone 5s to charge it....[con]: if it has no case (or if it is a split case where bottom folds away to give access).

Other cons: once it is plugged in:
    1) TouchID is awkward (though not impossible). But so clearly a design fail it is annoying.

    2) The audio controls are suddenly lost if you plug in headphone Specifically: a) the line-out volume is at a fixed volume and CANNOT BE CHANGED---either by the phone sliders, the phone volume buttons, or control built into headphones. Clearly, this is meant for situations where you are plugging it into an amplifier at some point (though others have noted line out signal can be too strong). But it makes using the phone with headphones impossible. In addition, you can no longer use the controls on the headphones to advance/pause etc: you need to work the phone, which is teetery.

Overall: Fail. Would have been better if it were just a dumb stand that extended the ports--at least then it would. This bit where it removes functionality when you plug it in bewilders me. (Others say remote control no longer works also). To add insult to injury, it doesn't even come with a cord. I end up plugging the USB/Lightning adapter straight into my phone, where it works find, and leave the $$$$ dock sits in a desk.

    Utterly disappointed

    • Written by from Peoria

I was very excited to purchase this dock for my phone in the store. The rep at the store didn't have much knowledge about the product and wasn't able to adequately answer my questions. Regardless, I still purchased it with hopes of absolute bliss. First and foremost, this product does not work with a phone that is in any case. I had to continually remove the case just to set my phone in the dock. That got old VERY quick. Secondly, the dock is very light weight and any time I tried to remove the phone from the dock, I had to actually pick up the dock to and pull it off. Lastly, the dock sits perfectly to interfere with the Touch ID functionality. Overall, this is not worth purchasing and I returned mine to the store. Frankly, I'm disappointed that Apple would have such a product. This is not the norm for Apple, and I hope they revisit this product soon.

Like others stated, this is flawed. What the )(*&)* was Apple thinking? The dock blocks the touch ID. Nothing more to say.

Everyone at Apple should be embarrassed.

    • Written by from Fargo

This is the worst Apple product I have ever used.

    1. It is too light. You can't simply lift the iPhone up, you have to hold the dock down with one hand and wiggle out the iPhone with the other.

    2. The front of the dock blocks the home button. Because of this it is difficult to use Touch ID to unlock the device. It is also more difficult to use the home button in regular use of the phone.

    3. There is no support behind the phone, just the cutout at the very bottom (that causes point 2.). In combination with point 1., the dock and phone tend to slip and totter all over the place when you push the home button or tap the screen. It does not inspire confidence.

    4. Speaking of the cutout, it only fits an unsleeved or uncased phone. No matter how thin your case, no matter if you are using Apple's own cases, the phone will not fit unless it is bare.

    5. It loses support for the Apple Remote compared to previous Apple iPhone docks.

    6. It disables the audio controls on the iPhone. This, combined with point 5. means I have to stand up and walk across the office to adjust volume since I have this plugged directly into a pair of powered bookshelf speakers & sub instead of a receiver.

    7. And not only does it disable the audio controls, it pumps audio out of the 3.5mm "Line Out" connector at 100% volume. Make sure you have speakers or a receiver that can handle this ridiculous signal. My THX-certified Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system in my office cannot handle it. Turning its volume knob more than a fraction of a degree from mute results in ear bleed-inducing volume.

This poorly-designed product fails at every single thing a dock needs to be good. It is simply terrible. Shockingly terrible. The iPhone 5s is a masterpiece of design. It is one of the best things I have ever owned, it's one of my favorite things to use. To have one of its accessories be this bad is a tragedy, an embarrassment. Shame on Apple for letting this product be sold under its name.

    Miss the remote control!

    • Written by from Campbell

I like the new doc for its sleekness and simplicity...but with my 4S, that doc would work with a remote control for easy remote on/off and volume control etc. Why reduce functionality but keep the cost up? To use my older models I had to buy an adaptor at the same cost of the doc, essentially doubling the cost of a doc. However, this adaptor did raise the iPhone up to eliminate the cumbersome access to the thumb print button mentioned by another reviewer. If it would have come with the remote, I would have given it a 5 star...but without, it only gets a 3 star.

I really don't know why this is getting less that 4 stars?

    • Written by from London

This dock is one of the nicest docks I have used, it has a 3.5mm headphone line out for your speakers or headphones which is nice. A lot of people and I mean a lot of people are complaining about using touch id with the 5s, I have had no problems with my 5s touch id; the button is covered up a tiny bit but everything works fine with it for me and there is no problems at all. It is very easy to get your iPhone 5 or 5s in and out even with one hand only. ABOUT THE CASE PROBLEM: As you can see in all of the apple pictures no case is on the phone, and the opening is small enough to just fit an iPhone, so I'm not sure why it is so surprising and disappointing for everyone to find out because it seems like people purchased the dock without even looking at it.

Doesn't work with earphones and with original leather case

    • Written by from Downingtown

C'mon Apple!!! What happened here? I use the dock at work, like I did with iPhone 4S and the old dock. Now, I cannot put the iPhone in with the original leather case - and getting the iPhone out of the leather case is very very hard! Additionally, you cannot use earphones with this iPhone any more - you cannot control the volume AT ALL! You nead loudspeakers with active volume control... The (passive) volume control of the original earphones is not working, it's just so loud, my ears still hurt :( I should have read the reviews before :-( I'd like to throw this thing away, pretty as it may be!

Incredible. So annoying. I ordered it online, and no doubt it will be a hassle to return it (I'll have to return to the store, no doubt). And all because I trusted Apple to be compatible with their own products...especially at a price like this. I'm pretty disappointed.

Don't buy this; you can have mine. Because I put an Apple leather case on my iPhone and so this base isn't usable. Does Apple really expect us to take the case off every time we want to put the phone in the base? Or use the iPhone without a case? Dumb dumb dumb.
