Don't buy dock and case together

    • Written by from Orange

Purchased 5s, case, dock - all together, in store, same order. Did they mention that the dock is completely useless to me because the case won't fit in it? No. They did, however, advise that there is no easy way to take the case off the phone, and that once it is on you are best just to leave it on... So again, why sell me a useless piece of plastic as well?

    Too Tight

    • Written by from Flanders

I got this dock to use on my desk while working so I could easily see and control my music. There are issues with the home button being partly blocked making it difficult to get a fingerprint but I could live with that.

The issue I am having is that this dock is so precisely molded to the iPhone 5s that even a screen protector on the back won't fit. There is plenty of room for a screen protector on the front but if use a full body protector (Zagg Invisible Shield) you will encounter issues.

    don't bother

    • Written by from Chicago

Unless you just want to dock a phone without a case, don't bother. I cannot take the case off every time I want to charge/dock my phone. So, it's pretty useless for me. Will be returning. Clearly, lacks creativity in design. I would prefer to give it zero stars.

    Great to Have

    • Written by from Boynton Beach

First thing to know is that this will NOT work with iPhones which have a case on them. This is only to be used with naked iPhones. I deducted one star for this reason as I know many like to have their iPhones wrapped up in a case.
I do not like to use cases on my iPhone, preferring to hold and appreciate the iPhone in its pure form. Yes, it gets a little scratch or nick here and there but I hate covering it up (as I did with a few previous iPhones. The iPhone sits snuggly in place when docked and gets its charge. The dock is a clean and small device with enough heft to it in order to hold the phone firmly in place on your desk. Having the dock instead of just the wire sitting on my desk looks so much better and I am much more apt to charge my iPhone by placing it in the dock so I have yet to run out of power due to typical use.
If you don't use an iPhone case and want to have a clean look to your desk, get one of these.

    Lack of Foresight and Vision

    • Written by from Chattanooga

Home run for the 5s but...please tell me that the team that designed the dock is now working for another company. I was in shock to know that you must remove the very nice leather case to charge your beautiful phone. Come on, the "Apple manufactured and designed dock" should accommodate the "Apple designed and manufactured phone" shouldn't it? Call me crazy or maybe I need to just adapt to a lower standard. Wow! Very disappointed. Im now stuck with a nice paper weight.

Should've read reviews before I bought it!

    • Written by from Fort Myers

Bought the iPhone 5s leather case and dock today. Put my case on the phone and opened the dock, just to realize that the opening is very small and the phone would not fit with the case on. I'm not going to take the case off every time I want to put the phone on the dock so I will have to return it. I wish the gentleman at the Apple store who sold me the 2 accessories would have let me know it wouldn't fit in the dock prior to purchasing, though!! I am surprised that Apple wouldn't design the dock to be compatible with their own case.

    Returning to Apple

    • Written by from Seattle

I will be returning this dock to Apple. As other reviewers have indicated, this does not work well with the new iPhone 5s. The main reasons I'm returning are:
    1. When docked, the front edge of the dock covers the bottom edge of the fingerprint sensor making it impossible or at the very least, challenging to unlock the phone using your fingerprint.
    2. When docked, the volume controls are disabled. I listen to music at work, so typically will dock the phone and plug the earpods into the audio jack on the back of the dock. At that point the volume control on the iphone screen as well as the volume control on the earpods do not work.

Will consider buying in the future if Apple can get the volume control issue resolved.

Nice & simple, but only if you don't use a case.

    • Written by from DALTON

This dock is essentially the same as the iPhone 4 dock, with the exception of the lightning connector. It is completely solid white, excepting of the non-slip gray footing on the underside. It feels solid and substantial, but does not weigh enough that you can simply pull your phone out of it without holding the dock itself down. The dock requires a lightning cable, (not included) which will plug into the back. There is also a 3.5mm port on the back for connecting the dock to a speaker, stereo, etc. If you are one to use your iPhone without a case and would like a dock, you should consider this dock. If you use a case, but don't mind removing it to dock your iPhone, you may still consider it, but this dock is probably not for you.

**In order to clear confusion let me restate the two most important facts:
-You can only use this dock if your iPhone 5 or 5S does not have a case on!
-You will have to place your hand on the back of the dock to hold it down while you remove your phone!

    Someone dropped the ball

    • Written by from Oxnard

    To echo other reviews:

Pros: Simple design, exact fit to iPhone 5s

Cons: does not support use of a case whatsoever (Apple or third party), does not include spare lightning>USB connector.

After a few hours with this item, I took the dock back immediately. The associate at the Apple store was aware of the frustration, as this was not the first dock return he had received.

    Disappointing

    • Written by from Pasadena

Bummer product. Apple not thinking clearly in offering this dock for the iPhone 5 and 5S. Cannot use headphones - blocked when docked. Therefore, can only make Speakerphone calls (not good with people around, etc). Might have worked if we could plug in our headphones in the audio out on the back to use for personal audio or for personal making calls.

Apple should have made an insert for the Universal Dock using the Lightning to 30-pin adapter and a plastic back to support the iPhone 5. I will continue to use my Universal Dock with the Lightning to 30-pin adapter (and a make shift plastic back for support). I'll figure out a better plastic support for myself (maybe steal a couple of the plastic extensions used in the Apple story for the iPhone 5S displays). I can still use my Universal Dock - Airplay music to my stereo using the dock, still use my headphones since the adapter lefts the iPhone 5 almost a full inch above the dock.

    This item does NOT charge...

    • Written by from Salinas

The first stentence that describes this product by Apple....Charge and sync your iPhone 5s or iPhone 5 with the iPhone 5s Dock. LIES... It does not charge unless you purchase the USB Cable & Power Adapter. Marketing is great at Apple....my bad...read everything before you purchase...you'll need more parts to make it actually charge. LOL. what a mess!

    Very un-Apple like.

    • Written by from MOOLOOLABA

Only for those who don't use an iPhone case.

Not even the brand new Apple produced cases will fit in this dock (and they are a pain to take off as they are so snug)

No audio connection either. Bad enough that the iPhone 5's headphone jack is on the bottom to then overlook being able to connect your headphones through this dock.

Back to the store with this one. Belkin has it hands down over this and its $10 cheaper too.

    Limited Function for headphone users

    • Written by from Redwood City

The audio line out does not support volume control from the phone nor from the apple earpods headphones (or 3rd party earbuds I've tried so far). Audio is sent out from the dock at full volume and can't be changed, so this is pretty unusuable for my main purpose - a dedicated set up on my work desk where I can listen while I work and access phone controls when needed.

I understand the technical reasons for this (built to send higher-quality audio to an external stereo) but since the iPhone 5 and beyond have the headphone jack blocked when using a dock, this means there is no work-around for using earbuds and this dock without blowing out your hearing.

That combined with the requirement to not use or remove the case before docking make this nothing more than a vertically positioning power adapter.

I'm returning this dock and hoping some 3rd party eventually develops a worthwhile dock with an audio line out from the dock suitable for headphone use.

    Terrible Implementation

    • Written by from Rocklin

Apple push selling a case with the iPhone 5c, but the case has to be removed every time I dock. Plus i can't dock with the earphones attached.

Someone needs to have a word with the marketing team - what were they thinking?

Not Compatible with iPhone 5S Apple Case

    • Written by from GREELEY

The dock won't let your iPhone 5S fit smoothly, you have to squeeze and push down the device to buckle it. Also, if you have InvisibleShield back protection on your iPhone 5S like me then you are going to damage the film for sure. Didn't thought the whole of this dock is too tight. The biggest disadvantage of this dock it is not compatible with iPhone 5S Apple case or any other cases on the market. You have to take off the case every time you want to connect your phone with this dock.

    Terrible

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

The execution for this product was horrible. It's so hard to unlock your phone with the fingerprint scanner while docked. Which is odd because it's a 5S specific dock and one of the main features is the Touch ID.

Apple made this dock and their own iPhone 5s case. They don't play nice with each other. I really can't believe the oversight.

I would not recommend buying this case.

    Horrible execution.

The dock doesn't work with any case...not even the Apple branded leather case for the 5S! You can barely get the phone to fit in the dock w/o the case. I returned it. This product was a huge miss on Apple's part.
