Don't buy dock and case together

    • Written by from Orange

Purchased 5s, case, dock - all together, in store, same order. Did they mention that the dock is completely useless to me because the case won't fit in it? No. They did, however, advise that there is no easy way to take the case off the phone, and that once it is on you are best just to leave it on... So again, why sell me a useless piece of plastic as well?

    Someone dropped the ball

    • Written by from Oxnard

    To echo other reviews:

Pros: Simple design, exact fit to iPhone 5s

Cons: does not support use of a case whatsoever (Apple or third party), does not include spare lightning>USB connector.

After a few hours with this item, I took the dock back immediately. The associate at the Apple store was aware of the frustration, as this was not the first dock return he had received.

    Disappointing

    • Written by from Pasadena

Bummer product. Apple not thinking clearly in offering this dock for the iPhone 5 and 5S. Cannot use headphones - blocked when docked. Therefore, can only make Speakerphone calls (not good with people around, etc). Might have worked if we could plug in our headphones in the audio out on the back to use for personal audio or for personal making calls.

Apple should have made an insert for the Universal Dock using the Lightning to 30-pin adapter and a plastic back to support the iPhone 5. I will continue to use my Universal Dock with the Lightning to 30-pin adapter (and a make shift plastic back for support). I'll figure out a better plastic support for myself (maybe steal a couple of the plastic extensions used in the Apple story for the iPhone 5S displays). I can still use my Universal Dock - Airplay music to my stereo using the dock, still use my headphones since the adapter lefts the iPhone 5 almost a full inch above the dock.

    Very un-Apple like.

    • Written by from MOOLOOLABA

Only for those who don't use an iPhone case.

Not even the brand new Apple produced cases will fit in this dock (and they are a pain to take off as they are so snug)

No audio connection either. Bad enough that the iPhone 5's headphone jack is on the bottom to then overlook being able to connect your headphones through this dock.

Back to the store with this one. Belkin has it hands down over this and its $10 cheaper too.

Not Compatible with iPhone 5S Apple Case

    • Written by from GREELEY

The dock won't let your iPhone 5S fit smoothly, you have to squeeze and push down the device to buckle it. Also, if you have InvisibleShield back protection on your iPhone 5S like me then you are going to damage the film for sure. Didn't thought the whole of this dock is too tight. The biggest disadvantage of this dock it is not compatible with iPhone 5S Apple case or any other cases on the market. You have to take off the case every time you want to connect your phone with this dock.

    Very un-Apple

    • Written by from Belleville

The only thing Apple-esque about this dock is the price. Please do not buy this dock, simply for the price. It does not come with a lightning cable. You have to buy your own for an additional $19. So you're looking at a total of about $50. Yes, you could use the cable that came with the phone but who sells a dock without a charger?

Also, this dock is not universal like the previous, very nice, Apple-quality dock that Apple branded and sold. Now you have to buy the dock that fits your iDevice rather than the insert (which usu. came with the iDevice). The only redemption for this price gouging would be a bigger iPhone 6, which would make unique docks for each phone a little more understandable (but still not very reasonable).

The base on this dock is not as weighted as the previous dock and when the iPhone is docked, the home button is covered a bit more. Also, this dock does not work with the remote (unless I'm doing something wrong, which is very possible) and it locks out volume control, requiring speakers with their own volume control.

Overall, there is nothing about this dock that I find to be better or even as good as the previous universal dock (30-pin). On Amazon, the universal dock is currently $59 and comes with the dock, remote, dock adapters (iDevice inserts), USB charging adapter, and USB to 30-pin cable. So, basically for $10 more, Apple gives you a remote and various inserts and more importantly, the option for various iDevices.

I am a long time supporter of Apple products (4 iPods, 2 MacBooks, 3 Apple TVs, 5 iPhones, 1 iPad, 1 Time Capsule, a few docks) and have never seen one take such a big step back.

    Poorly Designed

    • Written by from Strathroy

I was excited that Apple had made a new dock for the new iPhone 5c.
However it doesn't appear that much thought went into it.
I purchased the new iPhone 5c along with the Apple designed case for it.
Then I bought the dock... The phone with the case on it will not fit into the dock.

Too bad really. I expect better.

What???! No mini USB cable included?

    • Written by from Naples

What a pain. At this high price you still have to go find and buy a mini USB cable to use it!

Why not let the Lightening cable power it??? The fit is so tight you can forget about using this with a case, even an Apple case.

    Worthless

    • Written by from Alexandria

Don't buy this; you can have mine. Because I put an Apple leather case on my iPhone and so this base isn't usable. Does Apple really expect us to take the case off every time we want to put the phone in the base? Or use the iPhone without a case? Dumb dumb dumb.

Huge Apple fan but this is a dumb product. The fit is so tight that even a skin on the iPhone 5s won't allow the dock to accept the device.

Phone + Case Doesn't Fit In Dock

    • Written by from Sandy

Was very disappointed to learn that, with the Apple-designed case, the phone won't fit in the dock.

    Too Tight

    • Written by from Flanders

I got this dock to use on my desk while working so I could easily see and control my music. There are issues with the home button being partly blocked making it difficult to get a fingerprint but I could live with that.

The issue I am having is that this dock is so precisely molded to the iPhone 5s that even a screen protector on the back won't fit. There is plenty of room for a screen protector on the front but if use a full body protector (Zagg Invisible Shield) you will encounter issues.

Better off with a lightning adapter and the old 30 pin dock

    • Written by from East Molesey

Terribly disappointed at the design. Third party docks fit the 5 better (longer lightning pin I think) with a case on and the iPhone 6 won't fit either. If the groove was cut full width then both the 6 and 6 plus would fit.

With a redesign this would be great, and how about a remote too?

A better alternative would be to use the lightning to 30 pin adapter on an older iPhone 3/4 dock, which even has a remote control, and works with a case too! So long as the case isn't too chunky.

    • Written by from Odenton

Ridiculously expensive, came with no cables, and you cannot fit an iphone with any case whatsoever on this thing. Since I would bet 90 percent of people have a case on their expensive phone, who can use this without a hassle? Awful design.

    Lack of Foresight and Vision

    • Written by from Chattanooga

Home run for the 5s but...please tell me that the team that designed the dock is now working for another company. I was in shock to know that you must remove the very nice leather case to charge your beautiful phone. Come on, the "Apple manufactured and designed dock" should accommodate the "Apple designed and manufactured phone" shouldn't it? Call me crazy or maybe I need to just adapt to a lower standard. Wow! Very disappointed. Im now stuck with a nice paper weight.
