A dock is for convenience and one hand operation. This doesn't.

    • Written by from West Palm Beach

A dock should be for making it easy to plug in and unplug to a charger via the dock. This dock is very difficult to use, though. It is a two handed operation to undock the phone. Also, the dock is too high on the home button, partially covering it, making it difficult to use thumbprint unlock while docked. Huge disappointment.

    USELESS IF PURCHASE APPLE CASE

    • Written by from Falls Church

I should have read reviews. I bought the apple leather case, now phone will not fit in the dock. So disappointed. Apple should make a dock to fit an Apple I phone 5S with Apple case.

how to use dock with Touch ID

    • Written by from Fresno

My 5S was delivered today, and it works great with the dock. I'd read reviews saying the dock doesn't work well with touch ID so I'd been thinking about it while waiting for the 5S to arrive. I figured out how to make it work well:

    1) Run the Settings app
    2) General
    3) Touch ID & Passcode
    4) Touch ID
    5) Add a Fingerprint…

At this point instead of scanning the pad of your finger, scan the tip.

    A dock of no use

    • Written by from Schaumburg

I bought this dock for my new iPhone 5S. I had also purchased the Leather cover from Apple.
to my frustration first the dock cant fit with my iphone 5s if I use my cover. Seriously this is impractical. The iphone 4 and 4s had better cases the glass can break but it was a lot rigid. I had to buy the case as many of my colleagues having iphone 5 complained of dents. So I cant risk the phone using it without the case. And once I use the case the phone wont fit the dock. The other annoyance as with any other dock from Apple, well they never provide extra cable for the dock nor speaker aux cable or earphones. for $29 can give something for the user than just a block with a pin and ports to use whatever came with the phone.
Ideally at office or by the bed stand one would prefer using a dock and giving away just an additional cable wont cost much for Apple. And the logic of not having a additional slot expansion for apples own phone case use is absurd. I returned it, after looking at it for nearly an hour why the beauty wont fit my world, safe and sound.

    Poor Design

    • Written by from Bondurant

It doesn't work with any case on your phone, no matter how thin. They really didn't think this one through. The new lightning design is not long enough to charge with the case on. We had the old ones that worked with any case we had on our 3S or 4S 30 pin plug.

BEWARE: The 5S will not fit this dock if it is in a case

    • Written by from Petersham

    Potential buyers beware:

The iPhone 5S will not fit this dock if it is in a case.

Very poor product development here. Very unlike Apple.

This one is being returned to the store.

    Useless with 30pin-lightning adapter

    • Written by from Atlanta

First thing first, when I open the box, they dock look beautiful. The TouchID is not quite a problem for me because it does work every time I unlock the phone. I rarely use headphone with my phone anywhere because I wear bluetooth headset all the time. But one big bad thing about this dock is I cannot use Apple own 30-pin to lightning to the dock at all. Just by connect the cable adapter to the dock without connecting to anything else yet, my phone show a message say that this accessory is not support by this phone. Apple made this two product, yet they still cannot work together? I find that a pretty bad implementation not usually found in Apple product. This time you guys mess up big time.

Doesn't work with a 30 pin cable and lightening adapter!

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

I have an iPad with a 30 pin connector and the new iPhone with a lightening connector. So I use my iPad charger, put on a 30 pin to lightening adapter and plug it into this dock. At first this worked - sort of. I'd get a message that this accessory is not supported for this device. But it would still charge the phone.

Now - maybe after the latest iOS7 update? - it doesn't work at all. I can still charge the phone with the cable and lightening adapter, but not with the dock attached.

Seriously? This is an Apple charger, an Apple cable, an Apple adapter and an Apple dock charging an Apple phone. And it doesn't work. Seriously?

Other than that it's a sleek little dock that holds the phone firmly.

Apple's iphone 5 dock is perfectly designed...

    • Written by from Diamond Bar

I have come to expect excellent design from Apple. One of the only companies that I have basically accepted and trusted for all of their designs to hit the mark in a consistent group right on the bulls-eye.

The iPhone 5 dock is not different. It is a dock, intended for easily connecting your iPhone without having to fumble with cables, and being able to see the display easily. Connecting with your audio equipment via one connection. And, still looking simplistically classic (Apple style).

For each person who thought it should accommodate a case, I want to say "unreasonable!" because you can't possibly design for all the varying cases and provide the necessary physical support for the phone. duh.

Those who think it is too light, seriously(?), and if it was heavier many would complain. Think! we are going after LIGHTER products... we don't want "MacRocks", we want Mac Air's... light is better... (duh).

And the audio port, might not be convenient for a lot of people, because they expect if they can plug their headphones in, it should work. There are important reasons (which I wont go into) why you will never have a powered audio connection come from the lightning connector on a dock. It is as simple as that. It is like using a fire hydrant to wash your hair... not practical. The audio out is for feeding your audio into a self-powered audio system... not headphones. This is the best design possible.

So, many of the bad reviews for this dock are from people who "JUST DON'T GET IT"... 'nuff said!

The price is typical apple (well designed, not extremely cheap). The shape is classic. The functionality is at maximum capacity (i.e. you can't get any better).

If you want a dock for your iPhone, this is the dock to buy. If you want to plug your headphones into a cheesy piece of plastic, buy a Belkin. (Sorry Belkin.)

    Idiots reviewing this

    • Written by from Smyrna

I am shocked by the amount of ignorance in reviews.

    1. Doesn't support a case. You can't both support a case and no case. Not everyone will buy the apple case. Not everyone will buy a case. The phone is uniform. Support the constant.

    2. Volume won't change. It is a LINE OUT! Do people not know what that means?

    3. It doesn't charge without a cable. REALLY?! Really... Are we seriously going there? Did you think it was magical?

-if you want to take your case off, works fine
    Cons:
-Why do I need to take my Apple case off my Apple iPhone every time I want to charge in my Apple dock?

    Nice dock, but ...

    • Written by from Moorestown

This is a very nice dock but you cannot have your iPhone in any kind of case. The dock fits to the iPhone snugly, there is no wiggle room or anyway to jam your phone in if it's in a case into this dock. I would really love to see Apple solve this problem, especially for those of us who have a bumper case which is not bulky by any stretch. Back in the day, Apple use to offer a set of adapters with their dock for the various shapes of the iPod versions that were available. Why not do the same thing, except for their own cases? I think it's possible and hope Apple takes this as a suggestion, please!

I'm baffled at all the negative reviews about the lack of usability of the phone while docked. The product is mean for you to put the phone in it overnight to charge. Why would anyone expect or want to use their iPhone while in a charging dock?

    Could have been great.

    • Written by from Farmington

This dock is a great idea to purchase, if you keep your iPhone naked. BUT...If you, like most people, prefer to protect you $600+ investment or add a personal touch to your iPhone with a case, then don't waste your time and money. What I'm trying to say is if you have a case of ANY kind on your iPhone 5/5s (Yes this includes the Apple designed case) then your iPhone will NOT fit into the dock without removing the case. I understand that most docks do not work with cases, but the fact that the Apple designed case does not work with a dock THEY also designed frustrates me. This is very UN-Apple like. I am sure Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave. Another thing that worried me was that because of the incredibly tight fit, the dock would have more than likely scratched the bottom back glass after repeated use. I bought this dock and the Apple designed leather case at the same time. I returned the dock the same day it was delivered. Good thing Apple support is so good. The only pro about this case is it feels like it is well built, it has that heavy, quality feeling. Too bad it was designed so poorly. Strike one Apple.

    Not worth it.

    • Written by from Miami Beach

I was looking forward to this product, and bought it with my new iPhone 5S without a blink.
I used an Apple dock for my iPhone 4 at work and loved it, now here is why this new dock is not worth it:

    1. (bad) I used to grab my iPhone 4 single handed, quickly, easily. With this dock and the lightning connector, you need to weight on the dock with one hand and pick your phone with the other

    2. (worse) the previous dock was designed to leave full access to the home button, this one makes it very cumbersome. Specially with Touch ID.

    3. (worst) when docked, the iPhone 5 earphone jack is obstructed (as are the mic and speaker), and although this dock has an Audio output for music and video, it doesn't work with the phone application !!!!! I use my phone at work for long conf calls and need my earphone. It worked great with my previous dock, but now I need to undock, plug my earphone, then unplug my earphone and dock it back.....

In the end this dock "works" but it doesn't deserve the Apple logo, and is definitively not worth the price. Forget about it.

WOW!! I'm amazed at the low score this products recieved.

    • Written by from Orlando

Let me start off by making a few things clear why this is actually a great product and how people should know what they are buying.
1st. People complain the dock does not accommodate an iPhone with a case. Ok, have you ever used a previous version of the iPhone dock and been able to use a case? No, Never!
I have used every single dock since the original iPhone and ALL of them have required that I remove the case. That is a condition of this product.
    2. The line out is just that, a LINE OUT. It is NOT a headphone jack for your headphones. It is a constant analog output to connect to an amplifier or set of powered speakers. This is something you actually want if you knew what you knew what you were buying. The absence of the line out on every other iPhone dock easily justifies this purchase.

Moral of the story? Learn what you are buying before you run off and say it's terrible.
This is actually a great product and I'm happy Apple finally made this available.

As with many products, this will not work with the phone in a case. I bought the new Apple leather case for my iPhone, which is very difficult to remove. I think it would ruin the case if taken off too many times. Looks like another purchase that will never be used.
