Everyone at Apple should be embarrassed.

    • Written by from Fargo

This is the worst Apple product I have ever used.

    1. It is too light. You can't simply lift the iPhone up, you have to hold the dock down with one hand and wiggle out the iPhone with the other.

    2. The front of the dock blocks the home button. Because of this it is difficult to use Touch ID to unlock the device. It is also more difficult to use the home button in regular use of the phone.

    3. There is no support behind the phone, just the cutout at the very bottom (that causes point 2.). In combination with point 1., the dock and phone tend to slip and totter all over the place when you push the home button or tap the screen. It does not inspire confidence.

    4. Speaking of the cutout, it only fits an unsleeved or uncased phone. No matter how thin your case, no matter if you are using Apple's own cases, the phone will not fit unless it is bare.

    5. It loses support for the Apple Remote compared to previous Apple iPhone docks.

    6. It disables the audio controls on the iPhone. This, combined with point 5. means I have to stand up and walk across the office to adjust volume since I have this plugged directly into a pair of powered bookshelf speakers & sub instead of a receiver.

    7. And not only does it disable the audio controls, it pumps audio out of the 3.5mm "Line Out" connector at 100% volume. Make sure you have speakers or a receiver that can handle this ridiculous signal. My THX-certified Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system in my office cannot handle it. Turning its volume knob more than a fraction of a degree from mute results in ear bleed-inducing volume.

This poorly-designed product fails at every single thing a dock needs to be good. It is simply terrible. Shockingly terrible. The iPhone 5s is a masterpiece of design. It is one of the best things I have ever owned, it's one of my favorite things to use. To have one of its accessories be this bad is a tragedy, an embarrassment. Shame on Apple for letting this product be sold under its name.

WOW!! I'm amazed at the low score this products recieved.

    • Written by from Orlando

Let me start off by making a few things clear why this is actually a great product and how people should know what they are buying.
1st. People complain the dock does not accommodate an iPhone with a case. Ok, have you ever used a previous version of the iPhone dock and been able to use a case? No, Never!
I have used every single dock since the original iPhone and ALL of them have required that I remove the case. That is a condition of this product.
    2. The line out is just that, a LINE OUT. It is NOT a headphone jack for your headphones. It is a constant analog output to connect to an amplifier or set of powered speakers. This is something you actually want if you knew what you knew what you were buying. The absence of the line out on every other iPhone dock easily justifies this purchase.

Moral of the story? Learn what you are buying before you run off and say it's terrible.
This is actually a great product and I'm happy Apple finally made this available.

    Works as promised!

    • Written by from Toronto

Rarely write reviews, but was perplexed as to why this was reviewed so low.

It is a phone dock people. You put your phone in it to charge. It isn't built to magically adapt to every case ever made, nor is it meant to be operated while "docked". Hence the word...DOCKED. You don't operate a boat while it is docked either...do you?

It sits on my desk...it charges....I can see it easier when calls come in. Airplay works fantastic...it does what it is supposed to do.

Keep in mind that Apple sells phones, and there are thousands of OPTIONAL accessories you can buy. They are not all going to somehow work with each other, as they are all optional. Don't give a product a "1 star" because your combination of accessories and/or mis-use of the product didn't work out. Apple lists quite simply what the dock can do. Don't try different things and then say it is 1-star, that doesn't help the rest of us who are looking for products.

For those of you who plan to purchase the dock and use it exactly in the manner described by Apple, it works great and delivers as promised. For those looking for more options, i'm sure there are plenty of other docks out there to suit your needs.

    Really??

    • Written by from Albertville

The dock is useless if you have a case. Even if you have the Apple leather case that is made for the phone! The phone only fits in the dock WITHOUT a case on it. How dumb is that?

    Returning to Apple

    • Written by from Seattle

I will be returning this dock to Apple. As other reviewers have indicated, this does not work well with the new iPhone 5s. The main reasons I'm returning are:
    1. When docked, the front edge of the dock covers the bottom edge of the fingerprint sensor making it impossible or at the very least, challenging to unlock the phone using your fingerprint.
    2. When docked, the volume controls are disabled. I listen to music at work, so typically will dock the phone and plug the earpods into the audio jack on the back of the dock. At that point the volume control on the iphone screen as well as the volume control on the earpods do not work.

Will consider buying in the future if Apple can get the volume control issue resolved.

I've expected a speaker and mic port

    • Written by from Statesboro

Pros - It looks as nice as the previous ones

Cons - It doesn't have a grill or vent for iPhone's speaker and mic in and out.
I used to have iPhone 4 dock for my 4s and it sounded decent and worked well when I was talking on speaker phone mode. 5s dock doesn't give me the same experience that I've had with 4 dock and it won't play sound as clear as it used to be on 4 dock.
Also, it's line-out headphone jack is a bypass output so it won't work with any mic-remote and even further, the volume control on your phone won't work if you were using speaker hooked up into your dock's headphone jack.

    USELESS IF PURCHASE APPLE CASE

    • Written by from Falls Church

I should have read reviews. I bought the apple leather case, now phone will not fit in the dock. So disappointed. Apple should make a dock to fit an Apple I phone 5S with Apple case.

how to use dock with Touch ID

    • Written by from Fresno

My 5S was delivered today, and it works great with the dock. I'd read reviews saying the dock doesn't work well with touch ID so I'd been thinking about it while waiting for the 5S to arrive. I figured out how to make it work well:

    1) Run the Settings app
    2) General
    3) Touch ID & Passcode
    4) Touch ID
    5) Add a Fingerprint…

At this point instead of scanning the pad of your finger, scan the tip.

    Not worth it.

    • Written by from Miami Beach

I was looking forward to this product, and bought it with my new iPhone 5S without a blink.
I used an Apple dock for my iPhone 4 at work and loved it, now here is why this new dock is not worth it:

    1. (bad) I used to grab my iPhone 4 single handed, quickly, easily. With this dock and the lightning connector, you need to weight on the dock with one hand and pick your phone with the other

    2. (worse) the previous dock was designed to leave full access to the home button, this one makes it very cumbersome. Specially with Touch ID.

    3. (worst) when docked, the iPhone 5 earphone jack is obstructed (as are the mic and speaker), and although this dock has an Audio output for music and video, it doesn't work with the phone application !!!!! I use my phone at work for long conf calls and need my earphone. It worked great with my previous dock, but now I need to undock, plug my earphone, then unplug my earphone and dock it back.....

In the end this dock "works" but it doesn't deserve the Apple logo, and is definitively not worth the price. Forget about it.

LOLing at some of the reviews for this product. It's like the world is ending because you might have to remove your case before docking your phone. I mean honestly. Great product. Stylish yet functional. A+, Apple.

    Utterly disappointed

    • Written by from Peoria

I was very excited to purchase this dock for my phone in the store. The rep at the store didn't have much knowledge about the product and wasn't able to adequately answer my questions. Regardless, I still purchased it with hopes of absolute bliss. First and foremost, this product does not work with a phone that is in any case. I had to continually remove the case just to set my phone in the dock. That got old VERY quick. Secondly, the dock is very light weight and any time I tried to remove the phone from the dock, I had to actually pick up the dock to and pull it off. Lastly, the dock sits perfectly to interfere with the Touch ID functionality. Overall, this is not worth purchasing and I returned mine to the store. Frankly, I'm disappointed that Apple would have such a product. This is not the norm for Apple, and I hope they revisit this product soon.

Another Sign of Apple Losing Direction

    • Written by from Wellington

This dock for the iPhone 5s loses important functionality over previous docs.
    1.Home Button partially covered.
    2. Cannot control audio on phone when listening to it (unbelievable that apple made that mistake.)
    3. Does not fit with cases.

If we take this dock, and consider what has happened to keynote and pages (the new versions) it appears apple is becoming sub par to it competitors.

Does Not Fit With Any Case Not Even The Ones Sold By Apple

    • Written by from Saint Peters

I liked the idea of this product; finally one that seam like it would be worth having, like the connector for the speakers. The Issue was that the phone would not fit with the Apple case on and with any other case for that matter. GREAT IDEA, big miss. I had to return mine. SO MUCH FOR AN INTEGRATED FUNCTUNAL DESIGN. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME! and yes I returned it.

    Limited Function for headphone users

    • Written by from Redwood City

The audio line out does not support volume control from the phone nor from the apple earpods headphones (or 3rd party earbuds I've tried so far). Audio is sent out from the dock at full volume and can't be changed, so this is pretty unusuable for my main purpose - a dedicated set up on my work desk where I can listen while I work and access phone controls when needed.

I understand the technical reasons for this (built to send higher-quality audio to an external stereo) but since the iPhone 5 and beyond have the headphone jack blocked when using a dock, this means there is no work-around for using earbuds and this dock without blowing out your hearing.

That combined with the requirement to not use or remove the case before docking make this nothing more than a vertically positioning power adapter.

I'm returning this dock and hoping some 3rd party eventually develops a worthwhile dock with an audio line out from the dock suitable for headphone use.

    Are you serious Apple!!!

    • Written by from Plano

This is a really great dock. Your iPhone 5s will fit into it perfectly, and confidently. But!! That is also part of the problem. If you have...oh...let's say, one of Apple's beautiful leather cases for your phone, then everything nice, I've just said, goes out the door. You have to have a naked iPhone 5s, to use this dock.

So in other words, if you prefer your iPhone 5s nude, in it's beautiful self, then this dock is pretty perfect. The audio jack is a nice touch, and will work with any 3.5mm jack. BUT, if you have any kind of case on your phone, forget it.

    Could have been perfect...

    • Written by from Elyria

At first glance, this dock seems perfect. But...

When I plugged my Apple headphones into this dock, I was a little saddened to find that the headphone controls do not function (play/pause, next track, volume). Although, this was disappointing, the real deal-breaker was finding out that when the phone is docked, there is absolutely no way to control the volume level at all.

This makes it practically useless. $29.99 to prop your phone up off the desk. :-(

No good if you have a case on your phone

    • Written by from McKinney

Like most complaints mine is also regarding the sheer stupidity that one must remove a case -- even an apple one -- to fit the phone in the dock. I wish these people would have thought about this before releasing this product, or at least released two versions of the dock - one for using with a case and one without. How can they expect one to remove the case every time someone needs to put the phone in the dock?
