    Great range increase

    • Written by from White Lake

The AE became my base with a 4th gen my extended, and from my deck the average range increased 16% on the 2.4 band and 6-7% on the 5 band. I have a Linksys EA 4500 as the DNS router/server connected to the cable modem because it has UPnP, and the new AE averages 5% better than it on the 2.4 band and incredibly 21% better on the 5 band. I can't wait to get a Mac with ac wifi to test the speeds.

As far as not having 4 ethernet ports, does that really matter anymore? Sure it would be nice to have had a USB 3.0 but for a printer that's not necessary either. Maybe the complainers should look at the ratings for the latest Linksys EA routers with ac... 3-3.5 out of 5 stars, with almost as many 1s as 5s!

    Glad I bought it

    • Written by from DURANGO

While I do not use the new networking protocol, so I can't comment on that part, the strength of signal increase in my two story home is stunning. I get solid bars everywhere now, I used to get 1-2 bars in some parts of the yard and in some rooms. Streaming video from iPads and iMacs to the Appletv is solid. And... Totally easy to set up. I recommend it highly.

I have clients who went with other brands, saved some money, and are spending way more in tech support to fix network issues and drop outs. Plus they suffer and struggle with it constantly. Go with Apple. Pay for quality and excellent design and software. Then just use it. It works. Your peace of mind is worth it.

Best Wireless Router I've Ever Owned

    • Written by from Chicago

I don't even own any 802.11ac devices, but this thing has amazing range and reliability. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could because only putting on three router ports instead of four just seems like another calculated Apple move to arbitrarily tick off their customers. But luckily I just connected an old router to use as a network switch, so It wasn't a big deal. Aside from that, I have zero negative comments about this product. Also, I can get my full internet capacity (25Mbps) inside my car down in my parking garage through concrete, steel, and who knows whatever else is between this thing and the car. I'm sold.

    Incredible improvement

    • Written by from Aldie

I live in a large home with two of these on each end and on 3 acres of land. The signal now is incredibly strong and even covers part of my acreage. I never could do that before. I applaud Apple! Once yet again a superbly designed solution.

    Worth the upgrade!

    • Written by from OZARK

I don't even have any 802.11ac devices (yet) and this made all my current devices have notably better range and speed throughout my entire house from the previous AirPort Extreme. The previous model though very good itself still lost 1 bar of reception at the corners of my home but this one installed in the same position keeps a perfect full signal everywhere, and the speed is better as well. I HIGHLY recommend this!

    Generation 5 Much Better

    • Written by from Media

Don't spend the money to upgrade because it's not an upgrade! I have three Gen 5 Extreme's in my house - 1 base and the other two extend the wireless network., ordered 2 new Extremes - 1 for a base and one to extend the network.

I Set up the new extremes as a new network to test the speed between the two networks and the new extremes provide roughly 1/2 the speed of the older gen 5 based network. The gen 5 based network performs at the limits of the service into my home provided by Verizon FiOS. The new generation extremes produce 1/2 the speed.

Hopefully, there will be a firmware upgrade or something to fix the issue. BTW, I'm accessing the networks with a new macbook air with a/c internal wifi so I would think the new routers would be much faster.

Changed how wi-fi runs in my house-changed my world!

    • Written by from Springfield

Immediate, sharp, big bang difference in Wifi performance from my pre-supplied Verizion Router for FiOS. With the sneakily increasing amount of wifi devices in the house, it was necessary to upgrade, and while I was moaning about the price, it's been worth it. Seamless install of about 5 minutes, Apple TV is happier than ever, the Ipads are screaming fast - well worth it. If you've got an apple house like mine - it's worth the investment.

    Does not do most things

    • Written by from NORTHBROOK

I have a Brother printer that's not wireless. I can print through Airport Extreme. But I can no longer scan because it does not talk back to my computer. ok, then I manually connect the USB back to my computer to scan, but then other printers do not print through Airport Extreme. If I connect my USB from my computer back to Airport Extreme, My computer does not print. I tried using a splitter, that does not help. I have to restart the router and wait!

This is not all. Dell computer loses WiFi connection completely as soon as it goes to sleep. So that the connection has to be deactivated and then reconnected each time you want to use internet.

Not what I expected to do when I got this. Linksys for $60 does a better job.

    Best router out there

    • Written by from BEREA

I have owned the last 4 versions of the Airport Extreme and so far, this is the very best router out of all of them combined, Hands Down!!!! The range is far superior, and my 5Ghz WiFi is consistent throughout the entire house. On top of all that, this unit runs a lot cooler, the previous versions were very warm to the touch. Very highly recommend.

    Upgraded from 1st Generation

    • Written by from Lewisville

I have not tried the 802.11ac only n and g, but this new AirPort Extreme out performs by old first gen in every aspect: better signal strength for all devices in the house, improved performance. I am sure the dual band is much to credit. I like the smaller foot print (height was not an issue where I have it located). I have FIOS and stream movies from vudu, amazon, netflix; very happy so far.

Holding back one star because of $50 price increase and no usb 3.0. Also, agree with others that complained about packaging; I caught it falling from the box when I opened it.

    Best Router I have used!!!

    • Written by from Naperville

This router does it all. The range in a new construction house is about 200ft. I get 5 bars from the second and basement my router is located on the first floor. This also mirrored the modems speed instead of choking it like my previous router, this means my internet is just as fast as if I was connected to the modem and not through the airport extreme. This router also lets you configure it from remote location and the ports for allowing servers and other device chat with the outside world are easy to configure. Also signing static Ip address are awesomely easy. On top of that the external usb is great for storage device and printers. If you want a device that will be reliable then get the airport extreme.

    Tower of Power

    • Written by from Austin

The reviews are true. Switching from an older Airport Extreme to this model instantly provided five bar coverage everywhere in my home. Streaming appears to be faster as well.

The form factor is a little more challenging to camouflage but this certainly has nothing to do with performance. Great product.

    Amazing speed easy setup

    • Written by from Winlock

I had been fighting for weeks trying to get the wireless router portion of my Actiontec C1000a modem to be reliable. If I unplugged it it would work fir maybe a day and then get super slow unless I rebooted it. Once in awhile it would work for couple if days. I tried adding a wifi repeater but still inconsistent.

I was skeptical about investing in AirPort Extreme. Boy am I glad I did! Setup was a breeze and wifi speed have never been this fast, ever! I can travel anywhere on our lot and have wifi reception. Coverage is phenomenal. You can't go wrong with the AirPort Extreme.

    A must buy!!

    • Written by from Cheney

I bought this AirPort along with two MacBook airs because they both use the same 802.11ac wifi. And boy does this thing work! I live in a small apartment, so you can imagine I don't need it for it's wide range of coverage, but rather for it's capabilities. I own quite a number of wifi connected devices, and this thing handles all of them very well. It is making the best of the wifi that my new MacBook Air can handle, and getting me download speeds as high as my ISP will allow. And even my devices that don't use 802.11ac wifi have been shot with adrenaline when they connected to this guy. A must buy if you are buying a 2013 MacBook Air, or plan on buying any Macs in the future.

great wireless range, but falls short in other ways - rats!

    • Written by from Toronto

I really wanted to love this router. Its wireless range is the best I've experienced, but its features fall short in a couple of other respects (confirmed with Apple Support):

    - no support for dynamic DNS
    - no support for external drives formatted as NTFS - so an external drive that a Mac can read/write when connected directly via USB won't be recognized at all when connected to the Airport Extreme's USB port. Even a cheapie Western Digital N750 router will recognize external drives whether formatted for Mac OS or Windows. And the N750 has 2 USB ports vs just the one on the Airport Extreme.

    Perfect!

    • Written by from Hampton

I had my old airport since 2007. This year I noticed that our mobile devices and the speed at which my streaming movies would load had slowed down. The first day I saw that a new airport was available, I ordered it. I hooked it up in 5 minutes and the connectivity throughout our house has been perfect. I love the speed on this new airport extreme. I would hands down recommend that you pick this up and install it into your business or work network.
