Same ease of use, substantially improved product.

    • Written by from Vancouver

Just bought the new airport extreme coming from the 5th gen APE. I used to suffer with signal strength throughout my house but now I always get full bars of wifi in the furthest part. Works great with my iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook Pro, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U. My only complaint is the form factor, it doesn't fit upright as designed where I had my old APE was, but thats a small esthetic nit pick.

    Airport Extreme!

    • Written by from Seminole

I have recently switched over to Apple from the PC world, to a Mac Mini late 2012 handling all my freelance graphic design needs and invested in this Airport Extreme router. I must say I am highly impressed, as the set up was astoundingly easy and recognized straight away and the speeds/range is almost 10 times what I was getting with my expensive Cisco router that cost around the same price range.

The fact this is future proofed to wireless AC is a sure bet, you'll be happy you invested.

    Blazing speed!!

    • Written by from Rocky Hill

I just picked the Extreme up yesterday and I'm amazed on how much faster this is from my old 4th generation Extreme. I also had dead spots out on my deck before and now I am getting full signal. I can't wait to walk my dog this morning and see how far up the street it will work.

Quality is Beautiful and Looks fantastic on my shelve. It took about 5 minutes to set up through airport utility and it would have been three, but there was a update to install.

Apple did it again! Spend the extra money it's well worth it!

    Greatly improved range and reliability

    • Written by from MOUNT KISCO

I live in a large house and was previously using a linksys ea6500 router and netgear range extender to get whole house coverage. This set-up proved extremely unreliable as different devices would regularly lose contact, things would need to be rebooted, repowered and reconnected, generally a nightmare. Enter the new AirPort Extreme, on it's own it covers the entire house and a decent radius outside so we can work wirelessly on our deck and in our backyard. The speed even at the farthest point in our house from the router is excellent. The set-up took two minutes. I had purchased an AirPort Express along with the AirPort Extreme thinking I would need to extend the coverage but the extreme is so powerful I have returned the express. Excellent all around.

We have Verizon FIOS and paying for 75 mbps but
could not get more than 25-35 on wifi and 45-60 on ethernet on PC and iMac.

Now we are getting 75-85 on ethernet PLUS our wifi, thanks to your new Airport Extreme and the AC band, even though the N protocol is on everything else in our home wifi network.

Thanks Apple for this great product.

Awesome router. Seemlessly easy to set up. Did set up with Iphone. Dont understand review from person who said they couldn't connect to old airport express. After firmware update, connected to old airport express without problems. Apple does it again.

I had bought another router that was supposedly one of the fastest out in the market, it was very disappointing, so I decided to buy the Airport Extreme. This thing is really-really fast and very easy to set-up. I have very happy.

    Good-Bye Dead Zones

    • Written by from Davidsonville

After three days with this router I've yet to get an AirPlay dropout on any of my four AirPort Express-connected speakers or while watching my AppleTVs. This is in a 4400 square-foot house that has had several WiFi dead zones. I've struggled with many products to get reliable WiFi throughout, and admittedly I stress the network pretty hard by streaming content and then routing it to other devices. For instance, I'll stream TWiT on my AppleTV and route the audio from the AppleTV to the AirPort Express-connected ceiling speakers. No dropouts, no dead zones. Love this thing!

    Wow!

    • Written by from DURHAM

I just bought two of the new AirPort Extreme AC routers. One is my primary and the other extends my network to the other end of our house. The two routers communicate with each other wirelessly, and that connection speed is consistently greater than 550Mbps. Wow!

These routers replaced two previous generation Airport Extreme routers, and the speed and coverage/range improvements are immediately visible. Nice work, Apple.

    A worthy update.

Looks/Construction: Solidly built, typical minimalist design & packaging. The dimensions make it much more voluminous than the outgoing model, so its physical presence will be a bit more obvious.

Connectivity: The new AirPort Extreme router uses Broadcom's 2nd generation 802.11ac chipset, so it is already at an advantage over similar products from other vendors. Only 3 LAN ports might be an issue for some. I've occupied them all and I'm sure many others will too. USB 2.0 port vs USB 3.0 port even though it is supported by the Broadcom SoC (system on a chip.) I assume USB 3.0 was disabled to create separation between the AEBS and the Time Capsule.

Software: Apple's AirPort Utility 6.x has taken a step back in advanced set-up and monitoring. The older utility cannot be used to set-up or maintain this AEBS. This means that unless you have a Mac with OS X 10.7+ or an iDevice, you will not be able to configure the new AEBS. Other than that, set-up was a breeze. My iPhone recognized the new unit and asked me to configure it. It then asked if I wanted to transfer settings from my existing AEBS. The process was quite painless.

Performance: I bought two of these. The second is used primarily as a wireless ethernet bridge down the hall from the primary AEBS. The distance between the two is roughly 30ft with a couple walls in between. Sustained transfer rates are right at 45MBps (360Mbps.) Compared to my previous set-up of two 802.11n AEBS, it's a 2-3x increase in throughput. The old set-up struggled sometimes to saturate my Comcast broadband connection.

Price: Steep, but in line with other 802.11ac routers + a small Apple premium.

Thoughts: It works, quite well actually. My only major hang-up is the software, which I can't ding the physical product too much for. I might add that this is only rev.1 of the new look router because there will surely be several silent updates. Did you know there were five revisions of the previous model, all with notable differences? Now is as good a time as any to jump in though...802.11ac is that big of an upgrade. I'd also like to see "AirPort Extreme" branding dropped at some point. It should really just be called AirPort AC or something like that.

    Apple AirPort Extreme me918am/a

    • Written by from Kingston

Super fast and easy set up - even faster performance ! Just moved up from the 5th gen to this newest model . Using late 2011 macbook , with a couple apple tv2 , ipad2 , iphone 5 and iphone 4 . Everything that worked very well previously is moving even faster ! Looking forward to 802.11 Macbook air laptop soon ! Excellent range and power - even working backwards on b/g/n - probably 25-30 percent faster and same in increased range . Happy i made this decision ! Well made and looks great , prefer the aesthetic of this new router over the 5th gen . No longer using 5th gen extreme , and airport express -- the new device puts them both into retirement ! or for sale ! lol

    Fast and Powerful

    • Written by from Watkinsville

I bought this to replace my Airport Extreme 2nd Generation (which is still working just wanted to upgrade). The wireless router is located on the 2nd floor of my house and in my downstairs living room I was only getting 4-5 mbps. I have 30mbps service so I used an Airport Express (wired) to extend the range.

I hooked this router up and without any range extender I was getting 25-28mbps everywhere in my house. I used the old router now (since everything I have is N) as the range extender and consistently get 30+mbps in my living. I really didn't need too since the speed with just the new router was excellent but I figured since I have it, I might as well use it. I also hooked up my TV receiver and PS3 with a wire to the old Airport extreme since they do not support N. Now I can stream HD movies very fast.

The Airport express is now just used for AirPlay on my back deck.

    Great product so far!!!

    Great Router! Great Range!

    • Written by from Newark

I previously had a D-Link Router which thru out the years lost its range power, therefore i decided to purchase this item in hopes i could have enough range to use Wi-fi thru out my house. Thankfully this router has a much better range and signal, and now i no longer have Wi-fi signal issues. This router is definitely a great buy and worth every penny.

I replaced the latest gen 2TB Time Capsule and latest gen AirPort Express with two new Airport Extremes and the difference in speed and range are well worth it. We have higher speeds and better range in parts of the house that we didn't have before and the range extends well into our backyard and almost across the street. I am almost certain that our neighbors can easily see our routers now. Apple did a great job with the new Extreme. We are very happy with the results!

    Flawless and fast!

    • Written by from La Plata

Simply stated, this is a genuinely fast upgrade to the previous generation AE, which I replaced with this model two days ago. Much faster home Wi-Fi in all areas of my house. Signal now strong enough to stream outside by the pool where before I barely got any signal at all. Great Apple design and virtually foolproof setup. Took me 7 minutes to be up and running from box opening to surfing the web. Highly recommended.

My old AirPort Extreme got wiped out in an electrical storm the day this new one came out. I had to wait for a new one to be shipped from China but I am glad I waited. This new one can power 5 bars in areas that used to only see 1 or 2 with the previous model. Thanks Apple! I love it and I'm actually glad the old one got fried or I would never have upgraded.

Does what 3 Airport Express stations could not do!

    • Written by from San Mateo

I was struggling with a large estate that has thick walls and no option to run ethernet cables. No matter what I did the coverage and speed was very intermitted. Dramatic fluctuations of coverage with in the same room!
Replaced all 3 (new model) Airport Express stations with one new Airport Extreme. All problems solved!

Going to install some more this friday in an other location.

    Incredible speed

I purchased 2 of these puppies to replace my 2 Gen5 Extremes. I upgraded my TWC to 50 Mbps and now I can get 50 Mbps EVERYWHERE in my house when previously I was getting 50Mbps only close to the router and 20 Mbps everywhere else. These puppies are FAST! setup was a charm as it allowed me to automatically copy the configuration of my old extremes, and cleaned up afterwards ready to sell them on amazon.

I now get 50 Mbps on all my devices, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, 3 iPads, and 2 iPhone 5s, no matter where I am.
