    Fixed my problem!

    • Written by from Norfolk

I was having a lot of wi-fi internet problems. My network would stop working, sometimes I couldn't connect to it, sometimes the speed would decrease considerably for no intelligible reason. I got a new modem and a new router but the problems persisted.

A friend recommended this to me but I was reluctant due to the high cost compared to its competitors. As with all Apple products, you get what you pay for. I haven't explored many of the advanced features but it has completely solved my network issues. And it's super fast. I can consistently get over 50 Mbps (with my last set-up I maxed out at about 20).

Bottom line: it's expensive but you get what you pay for.

I regret buying this router, it has not worked correctly since day 1

    • Written by from Los Altos

I've had to replace this router twice. I really regret buying this router. I've had to reset it and my iMac numerous times just to get a connection and it doesn't want to work with my ATT modem. This router is now assigning wifi addresses that are not even on the network. I'm going to Apple store tomorrow and get my money back and buy anything but an Aport Extreme.

    Solid Router

    • Written by from Scituate

This is a very solid router. I hooked it up to my Comcast service and set it up in about 10 minutes. It works seamlessly. I noticed a strong speed increase across all of my devices - iPhones, iPads, and laptops - and the range was greatly improved. I have coverage on my back deck that I didn't have before with a strong signal. I highly recommend.

    New AirPort Extreme

    • Written by from Dover

I have owned and used a lot of apple products... from 2007 to present and will say my home lives and breaths apple.... so far i have had the router for about a week, and i have had no such issues. My range is a lot better than my current verizon fios router at the same tech specs... i don't have any issues with the air play like i did before... however i will say some things I don't like are that you cannot change channels, and or make a lot of sys changes like a std router...

Solid and reliable but hard to manage

    • Written by from Arlington

I have several generations of Airport Extreme and at three of each of the last three generations of APE and Time Capsules. They are solid performers, standards conformant, and secure. The early time capsules all failed due to overheating issues, but the current batch are great. The biggest problem I have with them is that unless use Airport Utility for Windows, it is very frustrating to manage them. Apple has severely limited their management app for iOS and OS/X. This is enough for me to switch to DD-WRT based hardware.

The OS/X airport utility up until version 5.6 was very good, but when Apple released the very limited iOS management app, they mirrored the new OS/X utility with the same limited feature set. Just as an example - under Windows you can show the DHCP address assignment table, but under OS/X or iOS you cannot. However with the Windows utility you can use the highly useful Back-to-My-Mac remote access feature for remote management.

So if you just want something to set up and forget, the APE is great, if you want to do anything else and you aren't using Windows, look elsewhere.

First Apple product that has frustrated me so much that I returned..

    • Written by from Seattle

    it in a day.

For all the fancy features it claims to have, it simply does not work. If the ethernet LAN connections work then the wireless network does not work while the yellow light on the Airport Extreme(AE) keeps blinking. If I manage to get the green light on AE then there is no internet connection. After shifting through a swath of user forums - interestingly enough Apple support does not even bring up this issue - that discusses this problem at length, I am giving up. I followed the same steps to connect the old AE - turn everything off (modem, AE and laptop), hard reset AE, turn on modem, wait for 10-15 minutes, turn on AE and wait for it to turn green and then turn laptop/PC on - and the old AE worked as usual without any problems.

In coming up with fancy design and big feature set, Apple seemed to have forgotten Steve Jobs mantra "It simply works" while designing the new Airport Extreme. That is a shame.

    Unreliable. Do NOT buy!

    • Written by from SAN RAFAEL

Failed multiple times within 1 year of moderate usage. Lost connection to HP printer; could not re-establish connection after inexplicable severance months after successful setup. Will never buy Apple accessories after this overpriced rip-off. Seeking reliable products elsewhere.

Set this up using my Macbook. Was the easiest router I have ever set up. Easier to set up than apples wireless keyboard and trackpad even, and those were really easy.

    Great wifi performance

    • Written by from Miami

I set one of these up as a wireless access point at work (10,000 sq ft building) and all of our wireless problems went away. Works great with our Double Robot running an iPad air and all other devices windows or PC. Wireless N and AC performance are great in any part of the building with at least 10 users.

Great router for apple wireless devices and external peripherals

    • Written by from Aizkraukle

Bought this router from local reseller in Riga. I've had few problems with previous router, that was working only on 2.4GHz, because of bluetooth interference (apple keyboard and trackpad). Then I decided to buy a new router, that is AC and can go dual band 2.4 / 5 GHz. So, bought this router. The setup was easy with airport utility. Also tried to connect old printer with USB to the back of router, and it worked even better than expected. Also tried to connect my USB flash drive to a router's USB port, and on both MacBooks (late 2013 retina, 13") we have, we could use it as external drive / time machine backup drive. Also the usb drive it can be used for files sharing.
When using 5 GHz, the signal is great and bluetooth isn't interfering any more, because it works on his own 2.4 GHz. Can't tell anything about the range, because our apartment isn't that big to test the range.

    great range, not enough ports

    • Written by from Hastings

We love this router. My husband can stream music while he mows the entire lawn. The signal is stronger and drops out less than either of our previous non-Apple routers.

We also hate this router. It has 3, count 'em, 3 ethernet ports. So, one for the Tivo, one for the Drobo raid array, one for the Tivo stream, one for the Wii, one for the Hue lighting controller, oh, wait, I ran out of ports well before I ran out of home devices needing to all be connected to the same router to communicate properly with each other and our iPhones/iPads. Good thing our printers, computers, and TV set are all wireless.

Apple, are you listening? A Smart Home needs more ports for more controllers, or else wireless capability in those controllers.

Very solid. Uptime for wireless is excellent

    • Written by from Sheboygan

I bought the airport extreme to replace my badly behaving d-link (their top of the line model). The old one required me to power cycle it several times a day, so I knew its days were limited. The airport extreme has been a solid performer for me. I think setup was just about the easiest ever for me in a router. I used the airport utility on my iPhone and I was up and running in under 15 minutes. It just works!

    Stay away!

    • Written by from Patterson

I purchased my unit from Apple Online in January 2014. Worked great for 4 weeks, until it started shutting down for no reason. Returned it to the Apple store in mid February, and they gave me a new one. Now, it is November, and the unit keeps dropping the internet connection. Wifi signal is great on both 5 and 2.4GHz channels, but NO connectivity. Airplay became useless. Pulled it out, and put back my old 4th gen AirPort Extreme. Yeah, signal strength is a bit less, but everything works so much better. Oh, and the Bonjour Share name problem with OS X Yosemite? ...it stopped!!! Everybody futzing around with their Macs, troubleshooting problems? More than likely it is their 6th gen AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule. I am going to try and return my unit. I do not have high expectations of any satisfaction, but hey... I have to try.

    So far so good

    • Written by from Murrieta

Not being computer literate, still on my iphone4, waiting for my new 6, I purchased AppleTV and was talked into the AirPort Extreme which after my son face timing me through the set up of my new tower going through my existing Verizon router, it was a cinche. I am now able to use wifi, on my 60" flat screen in the family room, my 30" f/s in my bedroom, my iPad ,iPhone, AppleTV, Galaxy tablet, my dads of cell phone, and a acre computer plugged into the AirPort Extreme. All using the wifi 24/7, with out any problems. Also had a friend over and he was using my wifi and could not believe how fast it was now compared to my Verizon router. Granted it was a costly $200.00 but Verizon wanted $129. For their upgraded router and an additional $10.00 per month for the upgrade. So I believe it's a win win for myself. I don't have much music on my devices like most but for what I'm using it for, it's perfect for me.

Second Airport Extreme and absolutely love it!!

    • Written by from Phoenix

I replaced an older version of the Airport Extreme, a 2009 version, with a new version today - November 20th, 2014. I have a huge home all on one level so I have a couple of Airport Expresses around the house as well - newer versions that do not plug directly into the wall. It took me about 10 minutes to go from old to new with great signals throughout the house. The newer version seems to be much faster than the older one. Love these guys and would recommend them to everyone that needs to upgrade a home wireless network system no matter if you have Apple products or not. I have an old Windows PC and it also operates faster on the internet with the newer device. Worth the money in my opinion. By the way, the older version may have dropped off the internet once or twice in 5 years?? Been so long since it happened I do not remember. LOL!!

Horrible Product - will not connect to internet

    • Written by from CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP

This was a total disaster of a product. We have a house full of apple products, 2 mac book airs, 2 iphones, 2 ipads and an apple TV. figured this would be a great new router. This device will not connect to our less than 1 year old cable modem. We had reset the cable modem multiple times as well as left it unplugged for a good 15 minutes before plugging it back in. at one point i was able to get access to the internet through the device, but only on my macbook air. the iphones said they were connect to the network, but they had no internet access. Seriously Apple, this is unacceptable.
