    Lousy, will try to return

    • Written by from Golden Valley

Purchased this router less than 2 weeks ago. DSL modem has been placed in bridging and this is handling all of the routing. Wireless signal is good. Worked OK for a couple of days. Then increasingly this thing seems to be rebooting and locking up irregardless of what I do. Unuseable. I reinstalled my old cheapy Netgear N dual signal and configured it the same way. In 24 hours I have not had a single issue. I worked at isolating the issue by power cycles of various devices. I have iPhones, macbook pro, iPad, printer, apple TV, ROKU. They all drop out. I also completed a reset to factory defaults and the thing is rebooting regularly. This is strictly an airport issue and the product is no good.

As I attempted to isolate the issue I was very disappointed in the Airport utility as the only means of pursuing trouble. The utility is extremely limited and is of almost no troubleshooting help. You can configure and check signal strength on devices. Beyond that the utility completely void. I do not recommend this product.

Bad power supply on 3 different routers

    • Written by from Murphy

The router is great except for one major issue. It can power off completely once every few days. I have bought/returned 2 of these already and now the 3rd one did the same and I will be returning for another brand. My power outlet does not seem to be the problem, tried multiple power strips and plugged directly into the wall...same result as the router keeps turning itself off. Plus, I have other devices using the same power strip/outlet and those work fine. It is a pain to continuously unplug and restart the router every time this happens. Apple does not know what the issue is, but obviously this is a major problem, so beware.

Guest Network is MAC-filtered like the primary network

    • Written by from LONDON

If I set up a guest network it's because i want my guests to be able to connect easily. How stupid is it that the primary and guest networks share the same MAC address access list??? It means that in order to connect, guests have to be registered into my AirPort! Imagine the length of the list!
A decent product all in all, but really such a ridiculous oversight on the part of Apple for the most expensive wireless router out there is not acceptable. You can get £15 wireless routers that manage to get this one right!

    Not a fan

    • Written by from Minnetonka

I "upgraded" to this device only to find out that it lacks the ability to monitor usage. Competing products offer an ability to monitor traffic and thus usage of your WIFI/internet connections but this device does not.

In addition, the updated Apple Airport configuration utility (which is used to configure the device) is extremely limited and the user interface is simply awful... one of the worst applications I've ever seen from out of Apple.

So, if you're looking for the best WIFI router with the best features, my recommendation as the owner of one of these is to look elsewhere. (I wish I had).

    Wouldn't work.

    • Written by from Newport

I tried for hours and could not make it work properly. If I got wired internet to the iMac I coudn't get wired internet to the Apple TV and vice versa. I only got wifi to my iPhone once and never to my MacBook Air or iPad. I returned it to B&H for a refund. Whilst travelling I went into an Apple store and had them open, set up, and test an AirPort Time Capsule which, so far, has worked faultlessly.

    HORRIBLE

    • Written by from Portland

HORRIBLE FOR THE PRICE! Expensive router that is NOT worth the MONEY! Router is NOT reliable at all. Like many other routers your internet will decrease dramatically in speed for no reason other than it needs to be reset. Not huge but when you're paying $200 for a router, it would be nice to not have to reset it every other day. Thanks for nothing.

    Spend $199 for a $39 router

    • Written by from fremont

What you won't be able to do with this router:
    1. Use a AT&T microcell. It just won't work.
    2. Use dyndns to match your domain name to your IP
    3. MAP ports to local IP addresses
    4. use guest WiFi in bridge mode because you bought another router and just using this airport-extreme-piece-of-sh for wifi only.

    • Written by from Le Grand

i'm having no luck with the Air Port Utility in the set up process. making changes to settings is not easy. My old Belkin was easier for me to understand. so until i can figure out how to extend my network on my airport extreme with my airport express both purchases are worthless.

    DOES NOT PRINT FROM IPAD

    • Written by from Castro Valley

Don't waste your money. Does not print from iPad. But will print from PC with Bonjour program installed. So it is just another router. Also can't access portable hard drives. Apple advertising is very deceptive to say how this is such a great thing but not specify clearly that the features don't work on the iPad. I wasted $200. Save yours.

speed OK but cannot connect external hard drive for wireless backup

    • Written by from Houston

I purchased the AE to enhance coverage throughout the house and to backup my MacAir wirelessly. I have a modern Seagate external hard drive (HD) with USB 2.0 that I've been using directly on the Mac via Time Capsule. I even reformatted it again when it wasn't recognized by Time Capsule via the AE. I used the "Mac Os Extended (Journaled)" option and confirmed all data being backed up was consistent with this choice via Disk Utility. No luck regardless of resets of everything. Disappointing since the tiny manual for the AE indicates an external HD can be connected for this very purpose.

Read up before you buy folks...too many with the same issue. I'd have purchased the Airport Time Capsule if the reviews were better...

    Will Not Accept Old Configuration

    • Written by from Snoqualmie

I run a small hosting business from my home and have been using a very old but still functional Airport Extreme for many years. Recently, "old faithful" would no longer power on. I thought the fix would be simple-- purchase a new Airport Extreme, make all the physical connections, restore my saved configuration and restart all of my devices. Not so fast...

Unfortunately, the new Airport Extreme finds my saved configuration invalid and will not allow it to be saved on the new router. It makes some very invalid assumptions about IP ranges that are being set and constantly complained about the router address being incompatible with the WAN address. After spending many hours trying to tweak my configuration to get this to work, I called Apple support. Although very friendly and helpful, we reached the conclusion that for my current configuration, the new Airport Extreme could not be used. The new version of the Airport Setup Utility is crippled. Old versions of the setup utility warn that your settings will likely not work since the hardware and software are not compatible. You can no longer manually configure this router using the latest setup utility. It should still have a "trust me, I know what I'm doing" configuration mode.

I have since purchased a competing router and manually loaded THE configuration that the Airport Extreme said is invalid. Installed, configured and tested within 60 minutes. It works like a champ.

I can't recommend the new Airport Extreme to anyone.

Overpriced access point. Great access point poor router...

    • Written by from Binghamton

How can you say this is a router when it doesn't support QoS? With VOIP being more common these days and it requiring QoS especially when gaming is on the same network, how can you have both without QoS? You can't! This is a huge mistake on Apple's part and I want to be a convert but can't for this reason. However what saved this product from being returned is this... If you buy a real router with QoS and put it between your modem and the AirPort Extreme and make the AirPort Extreme Bridge Only (Access point) you get great coverage. That is all this product is good for (i.e. as an access point) if you are using the latest technologies on your network, that is, gaming and VOIP which are most people. Hello Apple wake up! You got billions in the bank spend it on getting your products up-to-date.

    Unreliable

    • Written by from West Covina

I was so excited that my mom bought a new router. Only thing about setting up the router is that you need an apple device in order to set it up. Unfortunately, our home computer is still a PC and the other electronic devices we have are apple. But overall the set up was easy. First day with the new router we had no problems. The days after that were a disaster!!!! Internet kept dropping throughout the day and was never to have a stable internet connection. A weird thing was that the internet was only working on our iphones and ipad and not on our macbook or PC. Because of this, the connection with our printer is also disabled. We would always have to reset it once the internet came back on and when the internet didn't come back on and we needed to print something that becomes a problem! My family consists of two college students so the internet is always needed to do assignments! Overall, do not buy this product!!!

    Airport Extreme - Airport Express

    • Written by from ALAMO

Hi - I initially purchased a airport extreme, and it worked perfectly, but figured if one is good then more is better - NOT. I went out purchased another Extreme, and a airport express to cover my multi level home. After many calls, and software updates, they don't like to play together. Meaning, I hard wired the 2 extremes together and extended my wireless network, and this is when the problems started. I would suggest the product as a single function device, and avoid networking them together,
