    disappointed

I owned an iPad 2 with smart cover for over a year before ordering my iPad Mini. I was very pleased with the smart cover and included one with my iPad Mini order without hesitation.

Unfortunately, it didn't take more than 30 seconds with this new Mini smart cover to decide to return it...

First, it is considerably lighter than the iPad 2's smart cover, which might sound obvious due to the decreased size, but I found it to feel flimsy and thin in comparison to my iPad 2 version.

The real disappointment came when I closed the cover and found that the panels between the hinge and the outer edge magnets just floated above the screen, leaving a floppy 1/4" of space. I confirmed that the placement was correct by ensuring that the edges lined up, and several attempts to resolve by reconnecting the cover were ultimately unsuccessful.

My iPad 2 smart cover never had this issue and all of the iPad Mini photos show it laying perfectly flat, but this seems to be a design oversight.

I don't like how the case doesn't always set flat on the screen. The middle is always popping up.

Just got my new iPad mini and bought this cover with it. I find the cover to be in the way most of the time and the connection to the iPad Mini is weak. First hour I owned it I was showing to a friend who attempted to flip the cover to a stand and in the process the cover detached and the mini fell a short distance to the floor which cracked the screen. Not the cover's fault exactly but it interferes with having a good grip on the device and pulls away from the mini with the slightest pull. The iPad mini is fragile. I've dropped my iPhone a hundred times in the same way with no damage. Spend your money on a cover that will actually provide a good grip and protection in a short fall.

    Incredibly overpriced, doesn't work well.

I must say, I have never been as disappointed in an Apple product as I am with this Smart Cover. Where to begin? Well, when you fold it into the stand position, it frequently comes apart. The magnets just aren't strong enough. Speaking of, the Smart Cover doesn't really stay in place on the screen that well. Hold it upside down, and you'll see what I mean. It comes undone. If this were $10, then it may have been worth it, but they charge so much because they are Apple and they can. Do yourself a favor and buy an off-brand product. You'll get the same thing at a quarter of the price.

I am writing this review, because I think most of the comments here are not accurate. I got my ipad mini a couple weeks ago, and as I was looking for a cover, I read all the bad reviews on the apple smart cover. They almost made me walk away from this product. When I went to the store to pick up my ipad, I asked if they had an open cover so I could try it. They told me that they did not have any open ones, but if I bought one, and did not like it, I had until January to return it. So I decided to try it.
Well, IT WORKS GREAT! It does not move, slip, detach, etc. I have no idea what all the people complaining are doing with theirs, but I have had no issues with mine. Try it, it works very well.

I'm a huge Apple fan and hate to say anything negative about their products, but this cover is horrible. . the cover doesn't stay on well, and that is a huge deal for me because I carry this around in my purse and don't want it to get damaged. I reach in to my purse to get it and the cover has slipped off. NOT good.

    Returned mine

I've been a Smart Cover user for the full-sized iPad since its release and love it.

While this Smart Case may look like that product, it's very different.

My biggest gripes were the following:

    1) the cover is rather loose fitting. When in a bag, it never seemed to stay put and keep my mini locked. When sitting closed on a desk, you could often see a gap under it on the front of the screen. When you open it and put the cover on the back of the device, it slides around/rotates a few degrees, causing it to be awkward in your hands.

    2) It's very weak. For the life of me, I couldn't get it to work well as a stand. On anything other than a flat/hard/steady surface, it fell apart.

I'm currently without a solution for protecting my mini, but I can wholeheartedly say this is not the answer. I've owned nearly everything Apple for a decade now and this is the first return I've made.

Bad, in fact. Please don't buy this thing. It's pretty lousy and you can find better third party options for half the price.

Here are the things that caused me to hate it:
    - Like others have said, when closed it lifts itself up a little in the middle. I understand that not everyone experiences this, but for a first party product costing 40 entire dollars, I expect consistency.
    - It slides around very easily when closed, due to the lack of a hinge on the connecting side and weak magnets on the other.
    - The fabric will soak up all the sweat and grease from your naturally gross hand, and conveniently transfer all that to the mini's screen.
    - Used as a stand, the magnets are not nearly strong enough to maintain integrity when nudged. The full sized version got around this by having an additional flap that would fold under. No such luck here.
    - It is probably the clumsiest possible thing you can attach to this expensive, droppable device.

Don't get me wrong, I love the mini. I just think this is a poorly designed, over-priced magnetized rubber flap we all need to forget. Let's move on together.

Of course it's over-priced, but at least it doesn't protect the Ipad. I find it detaches from the Ipad too easily which has caused a few close calls (dropping) during the first weeks of owning this cover. It is slim, and adds very little to the dimensions of the Ipad, which is nice.

Not a fan of the iPad mini Smart Cover. I find that without the additional fold that the larger iPad Smart Covers have, it is very weak. Using it as a stand often results in the case collapsing and the iPad slapping down to the table. The magnets holding the triangle stand together need to be stronger.

Bought two of these for ipad minis I bought and tested one out and nearly dropped my ipad several times! The magnetic attachment is not strong enough it easily slps out of your hand if you hold it while its folded. They should make the same case for the minis as they do with the regular ipad with the backing attachment and all. I had to return one of mine for another case that apple doesn't sell. Worst item design ever.

Save your money and buy a 3rd-party case that protects the whole iPad. The Smart Cover doesn't even cover the back, sides or corners of the iPad. Not a very good product for the price point.

Dont buy this excuse for an ipad mini case, just go with a dodo or speck those guys are getting better. Got this with my ipad mini, doesnt stand very well, falls when in landscape mode a lot... i take it to class with me a lot of times and the case always tends to fall off. the magnet is very poor and is not like the Ipad smart cover. it doesnt even cover the back. Just buy something from a third party rather than this case.

Great cover for the iPad Mini!

I found the cover to work perfectly - just as designed. It works the same way the smart cover does on the full size iPad . It has a strong magnet on the side for keeping it snug against the edge of the iPad Mini.

I did not find the cover I purchased from the Apple store to separate at all from the surface of the iPad like some others have said. When it's closed, it lays flat against the glass front of the iPad. The cover folds all the way around the back of the iPad Mini if you want to lay it flat.

This is a well designed, well manufactured cover that integrates well with the ultra thin profile of the iPad Mini. It offers great protection without adding any bulk.

    Very Disappointed

I own an iPad 2 and loved the smart cover because of how it protected the iPad screen. I am the type of person where I do not like a lot of accessories, "less is more" type of guy.

So when I bought my iPad mini, I immediately bought the smart cover and it only took a couple of minutes for me to decide that is was a poorly design product. It was very light weight and when I laid the cover flat on the iPad mini, part of the cover stood up. There was no way to keep it down.

Luckily apple has a good return policy. I was just really disappointed because I wanted a smart cover but I ended up going to amazon and buying a leather case for my iPad mini for half the price.

    Works fine, with a quirk

Not sure what others are talking about that this cover doesn't attach very well. Mine works perfectly and I can even dangle the mini from it and it doesn't come loose.

I only wish they hadn't done away with the metal hinge. This material is too flexible so the cover slides around a bit when it's folded back. My wife really hates that, but for me it's just a minor annoyance.

    Otherwise great product as usual!

    Good items but little expensive

I got my mini and also got smart cover. First of all, I was afraid to buy this item(smart cover) because most reviews that i read were negative comment on this. In fact, smart cover looks fine in my opinion, and the price is kind of expensive. However, I give this five stars because there is nothing wrong with this item. Also, it is just a smart cover, and it only protects the screen. So, if you look for the entire protection for your ipad, this one is not working at all. But, if you only look for protecting the screen, then this one works well.

I was disappointed when I received the cover for my daughter's mini iPad. I thought it would serve as protection for her new iPad mini. The cover doesn't stay on and offers little to no protection. Tried to return but was told it was not eligible for return.

For what it's designed to be, I feel like this is perfect. No metal parts means no scuffing your ipad (had that happen with my ipad 2). It attaches easily, detaches easily, and is perfect for keeping your screen from getting scratched. This DOES NOT protect the back of the ipad, but the negative reviews citing this "problem" didn't do their homework first.

Unlike other reviewers, mine lays perfectly flat on my screen when closed. It folds easily, and the magnets help to keep it folded. They also help keep it folded back behind the device. The material, to me, feels identical to that on the big ipad covers.

I own three other cases that provide front and back protection, but this is the one I keep coming back to for daily use. Light, functional, sleek. It's certainly engineered by Apple. Just know what you're buying before you spend your money.

    It is to flimsy
    It pops off to easy.
If it was a front and back cover it would have been a better product.
    My opinion.
    Returning it ASAP.

    The iPad is awesome. :)
