It's value, not price, making this iDevice accessory a must!

    • Written by from Burnaby

By using the Digital AV Adapter with our new iPad Air, my wife was convinced of its value AND usefulness when she was able to almost effortlessly connect it to the HDTV and watch daily Hong Kong soap operas not yet available for another year on Canadian cable TV.

I cheekily only gave this 4 out of 5 stars because now I have to buy an iPad Mini with Retina Display for her so I can get the iPad Air back for my use... ;)

    Simple yet sophisticated

    • Written by from Pasadena

I'm not sure why some users are having difficulties ... as soon as I connected the adaptor, I was able to watch home videos, view photos, and best of all, watch movies. The image quality is perfect on the movies as is the audio quality.

Apple is awesome! Such a small little adaptor ... with such great possibilities!

Used in movie theater and was great!

    • Written by from Sandy Hook

We purchased this to stream a movie from the iPhone 5 onto a movie screen in a local theater for a birthday party. It worked great! The picture and sound were amazing, and you would have never known it was coming from an iPhone. Would highly recommend.

    Works great

Not sure why so many have an issue with this. Yes, it's extremely overpriced but it works fine. I use it at least once a week to watch movies on my 50" plasma with no issues whatsoever. I've used with both my iPhone and my iPad.

    Product works as advertised

    • Written by from Midlothian

I had read reviews of this and another cable of people claiming it did not fit even with the Apple case. Rather than order online I drove to the Apple store and asked them if I could test it there on the spot. Of course, they were offended at the idea that Apple would not make it compatible with their own case I as have on my iPhone 5s and iPad air.

In short, it fit perfectly. I brought it home and it works perfectly on my HDTV.

Do I wish the price were a bit cheaper? Sure, just like everything else I own with the Apple logo, so get over it. It's supply and demand. As more third party knock offs are made, perhaps you can take your chance with their junk. For now, I and others will pay the price and it works.

    Awesome!

    • Written by from Knoxville

I do not understand the comments about this product not working? I also do not understand how people can purchase this product without reading the tech specs about it, and then coming on here and complaining about things that it won't do or why it's incompatible with their equipment, etc… when all they have to do is take a minute and read the tech specs. All the answers are there and they would save time and money to find out whether it would work or not with their current setup. This thing is awesome and has saved us from having to purchase another external device to play movies, TV shows, etc… since it produces HD quality for such things!
Just do the research and enjoy, and/or save! Great product Apple…As usual!

Airplay Audio broken by iOS 7?

    • Written by from Abergavenny

A quick search of the Apple forums will lead you to conclude that iOS 7 has stopped this accessory from functioning as expected. Previously (and also with the 30 pin connector) it was of course possible to plug HDMI in for video and stream audio to an Airplay speaker. You'd have the "Content is playing on the TV" blank screen on your device, your moving image up on the screen, and the audio coming out of your Airplay speakers.

Now, however, I find that when you try this, the video freezes on the projected screen, and will play only on the device itself (while the audio plays out of the Airplay speaker).

Alternatively, you can watch your video up on the screen… but in complete silence! Way to go, Apple!

Good product but pricey & satisfaction depends on a few factors

    • Written by from Kendall Park

All the questions I had were not answered in one place for this product, so here is my summary from reviews, my local Apple store and my first experience with it.

I bought this adapter for use with my iPad Air. It was a success with minor caveats. Overall I was satisfied because the video apps I wanted to display worked and were shown at 1080p resolution I expected. Your results may vary.

HDMI cable: It does not come with one. Have a spare one ready.

Resolution. You will get 1080p with an iPad Air only, 720p with earlier iPad models.

Premium video services: Some allow HDTV display, some do not. Do not blame your iPad or this adapter. You can watch all video apps on your iPad, BUT each video app decides HDTV display support individually. Apparently the iPad and the apps know when you are connected to a TV, just like a laptop knows with a projector for proper presentation formatting. HBO GO supports displaying on an HDTV connected with the adapter, but Amazon Instant Prime and Showtime Anytime do not. According to other reports I read, Netflix also works (but I don’t have it and could not test it).

Non-premium video apps: All I tested worked well, including movies downloaded to my iPad Air and YouTube.

Video quality: I had 1080p resolution with all video with my iPad Air. There was slight video noise with HBO Go on one of my Samsung HDTVs, but none on my second one.

Non-video apps: All non-video apps I tried displayed fine with 1080p clarity and no video noise.

So in summary, your satisfaction will depend on which apps you want to display on your HDTV, at what resolution and with the high price charged for this adapter.

Not as good as the 30 Pin Digital AV Adapter

    • Written by from Keenesburg

Works well for driving a signal to an HDMI or DVI (with HDMI to DVI converter). I was a little disappointed because the older 30 pin version allowed me to drive a video signal to a monitor AND connect to my Mac Air simultaneously.... I was fond of loading new movies onto my iPad while I watched a show.

This new adapter only supports charging your iPad ... not as good. If you are like me and used the older 30 pin adapter this subtle difference in functionality may not be apparent (although it is clear in the product description). Not one of the on-line reviews I read mentioned this difference in functionality.

Videos in landscape mode shrink to portrait mode on TV

    • Written by from Willich

I bought a Lightning Digital AV Adapter to watch my camera app videos on TV. The videos were taken in landscape mode. Unfortunately just the preview appears in landscape mode on TV for a second. Then they shrink to portrait mode. But not every video. Some of them have the correct display mode. This makes me angry!

Photos or videos from the video app are displayed correctly too. These issues are just with the photo app. I tried this with two different iPhone 5 (iOS7) and three different TV's.

Because of this and the extremely high price I just can give two stars :-(

Enables me to stream Netflix to HD TV without WiFi!

    • Written by from Portland

I bought this product to use at a vacation cabin - I get cellular data but there's no WiFi. This adapter allows me to stream movies from my iPhone 5's Netflix app directly to our HDTV. This method has been very reliable, the installation is simple, and the picture/sound quality has been comparable to streaming Netflix through my TIVO via WiFi at home. I'm completely satisfied, and now I don't have to rent DVD's when we go to the cabin. It's like magic!

CAUTION: Pay attention to your data usage if you don't have an unlimited cellular data plan. Movies use up a lot of MBytes!

    Works great!

    • Written by from Houston

I was a bit skeptical about this product after reading through the reviews but decided to give it a try. I went into the Apple store this afternoon and had them hook up my iPad to one of their televisions using the adapter BEFORE I made the purchase. Worked exactly as I wanted in the store and also when I got it home.

Not sure what the folks having problems are doing (or not doing) but for me, it was definitely worth the trip to the store. And, because it's working so well, I can overlook the price though would have been great if it cost about $20 less (smile ... I hope you're listening Apple Marketing since price is a recurring theme in these reviews).

Bad design—does not fit Apple 5s cases!

    • Written by from Las Vegas

This adapter is the complete opposite of Apple's "Forward thinking" slogan. Why would Apple design an adapter that has a different size head than the cables that comes with the 5s phones? The Apple leather cases have holes cut just for these smaller OEM cables thus making the adapter useless since it won't fit through the hole. What the heck were they thinking?! I was willing to swallow the premium asking price just to make some of my cables usable again (especially that pricey Composite AV cable), of course it's never a simple and cheap solution. Whoever designed these adapters and cases should be sacked for having tunnel-design-vision. Forward thinking my a**.

Setup: Samsung Smart TV, iPad mini with IOs7, this cable and a HDMI cable (which works by the way)
Connected all devices, switched TV source to HDMI input and ... nothing. £39 wasted.

    Overpriced but works great.

    • Written by from Turlock

Bought for use with iPhone 5 movies and TV shows from iTunes. It did not want to work with my old Toshiba TV/DVD combo. It does work with my 1080p monitor after I set the input signal on the monitor ( menu shows: analog/digital/HDMI ). Since the monitor does not have sound I plugged an external speaker into the iPhone and it works great.
