Lightning connector still too short to work even w/ a slim case, June 2014

    • Written by from Greenwood Village

Needed so that iPod Touch 5th generation (lightning connector) will dock with a CD/alarm/radio (30-pin).

With a super-super-slim case on the iTouch, the iTouch appears to attach, but the lightning connector does not actually go in all the way, so its presence will not register at all, even to charge. But without a case the iTouch connected, synced and transferred the correct time to the clock, at first attempt and subsequently works well - it both charges and also plays through the clock's speakers.

My concern is that since the jerry-rigged contraption now pokes up almost 8 inches vertically out of the dock, the lightning connector protrusion in the adapter is going to bend itself out of commission before too long due to the weight of the iTouch and the inevitable wear and tear of removing and replacing it.

But we have shopped for three months locally, online and even on tv and could not find a CD/alarm/radio/iPlayer with a lightning connector in the dock or that came with a built-in adapter. And as my daughter has a ton of CDs and we don't want to spend hours putting them onto her iTouch, this is the best answer. The one we got came from HSN, btw, in case anyone else is looking for something similar.

I am rather shocked that it's been years now that reviews have been posted here saying that the lightning connector is too short to work when an iProduct has a cover, and yet Apple still hasn't apparently lengthened it. It probably needs about 2-3mm to make it work. Don't they read? Don't they care? Shame on you, Apple.

Works for iPod Nano 7/MBZ. 30-pin

    • Written by from Orange

Just purchased new iPOD Nano 7. I have a 2008 MBZ 350ML that came with iPod 30-pin cable connector. So, had to purchase this adapter in hopes it would work. I even called MBZ to inquire if MBZ makes this device and was told NO, but was advised to buy this device directly from APPLE. Called APPLE and inquired if they knew for sure it would work with my situation and was told "it should", but if not I could definitely return. So far, so good. Seems to work perfectly fine. Have NOT, however, determined if it charges the iPod when connected. Gave 4 stars because I feel it is overpriced.

    Awesome product!

    • Written by from Pompano Beach

I bought this for my iphone 5c. I have all the accessories for the iphone 4. The item is smaller then I expected but I actually like that more. It fits snugly. It works with the cords I have, and with my logitech speakers. It's secure on the speakers so I do not have to worry about it falling out. The sound quality is great, I do not notice any difference. The best part is it works with my otterbox defender case. I do not have to take the case off like many other reviewers have said. I am very satisfied with this product. I would definately recommend it.

Not sure why, but it doesn't charge consistently...

    • Written by from Arabi

I still have my iPhone 4s and love it. But last year I bought the 128GB iPad 4th Gen... I have the charger that came with it. But other lightening chargers don't seem to work. So, I bought the adapter to use my 30-pin chargers if ever in a pinch. I have gone through a few of these... ultimately it worked great when I first bought it. But over time, if I try to charge my iPad 4th gen, it won't charge! For data purposes it works great! But charging... nope. Oh well... should've bought an additional charger. I must admit, I bought 2 chargers on ebay. Not "apple" and they are the same, won't charge but for data purposes they work. I haven't bought anything else from the apple store; worry I'll waste more money... what to do? what to do?????

    30pin adapter

    • Written by from Spring

I brought to use with my Bose player, since it was recommended to me and I was told it would work with my iPhone 5. No such luck. Plays the music, but not very loud and does not charge the phone. Unfortunately I had already thrown the receipt away.

Important to know, DON'T GO CHEAP!

    • Written by from Nashville

This is my third adapter but first one by Apple. DO NO BUY THE CHEAPER ONE! They may or may not work with docking stations. With Apple one, make sure the surface on the docking station is flat ( many are rounded) so it connects properly. If not, it will charge but you can't get audio. For my Bose and Sony docking station, it works great! Also connects to RCA cable adapter for older Bose Radio.

    works great!

This works great with my iPhone case, on my car charger, and electric wall plug in chargers. Works best on authentic Apple brand chargers. My only complaint is that I think it is overpriced.

    Third broken adapter

    • Written by from Webster

I have bought and managed to break three lightning to 30 pin adapters. The lightening pin plug has come loose from the housing and plugging it back in does not reconnect. I am very cautious with all things electronic but feel that after $90 for three of these things i am at a loss and ready to give up on apple all together. What happened to this company anyway? And don't get me started on the "new" iTunes.

Doesnt work for video - how stupid is this, Apple?

    • Written by from BROOKLYN

Wish I'd checked the reviews before spending $30 for this adapter but I assumed Apple adapters would work with Apple products. What a silly assumption apparently! Bought this specifically to connect my iPad Air and iPhone 5 to my TV via a 30-pin AV cable (Apple of course) which i've used to connect my previous iPads and iPhones to my TV. All i can get is audio - no video. Not very entertaining to watch a blank TV screen while listening to my downloaded movies and TV shows. Thanks Apple!

    Works fine for me

    • Written by from Nampa

I have had the iPhone 5, now have the 5s and have used this adapter on both phones. I have the Otterbox Defender case and the adapter works just fine with the case on the phone. No need to remove the case to charge the phone.
Not really a big fan of adapters due to the extra connection requirement as that can and sometimes does lead to some problems...the more connections, the more problems one may encounter. Would be better to just use an extra charging/sync cable...and it would be cheaper too, by about $10-$20, depending on length of cable used. And there's little or not problem of using a charging/sync cable with most protective covers being left on the phone to charge.
Each individual situation has its own 'problems' and a little 'common sense' will work them out. All one has to do is use it (common sense).

    Very Good

    • Written by from Sherman Oaks

People giving this one star are obviously un-educated. Many are giving one star because it won't fit a case or cover. In reality Apple can't just extend the lightning cable end like that. So first get your facts straight and realize that you are wrong. Third party cords will be the same. And matters on each case you have. So check yourself as well.

    Works great

    • Written by from Derry

Although it was a pain to have to buy the adapter in the first place when I bought my new Ipod nano 7th generation, it works great. It connects to all of my 30bit devices with no sound difficulties. I use it for my Hyundai Ipod adapter in my car and my IHome. No complaints.

Doesn't Work With Apple Iphone Case

    • Written by from Oakland

They sold this to me at the Apple Store and I asked if it would work with the Apple Iphone case on the phone. They said it would and it does not. I would recommend Apple try to make Apple products compatible with one another.

    Incompatible with Apple's own products

    • Written by from London

I've just spent a ridiculous $100 + taxes on three cables, a lightning to 30 pin adapter at $30, a USB adapter at $30 and a 30 pin HDMI adapter at $40, assuming the combination would allow me to connect an iPhone 5, an ipad 4 and a 30 pin ipad to a variety of peripherals. As soon as you connect two Apple cables together you get an "incompatible" message, which is frankly a disgrace. This means you have to buy multiple, separate cables at huge expense for each device to even stand a chance of getting them to work with the same peripherals. Judging from other posts, even this won't provide full functionality on many of them. Sort it out quickly Apple, the competition are catching up and overtaking fast.

    Perfect

    • Written by from Aurora

The ridiculous Apple price aside, it's a perfect product. I just purchased a 7 generation iPod Nano and I have owned a Bose series II sound dock for just over a year. The Bose accommodates a 30 pin, not a lightning. The adapter is tiny and it works well. It also charges my Nano 7 gen while docked. The audio is perfect. I can only speak for the Nano...I don't own/want an iPhone. Also, problems with a bulky case dates back almost a decade so please, enough with the complaints about this product not working with your bulky case. I would give this product 5 stars if the price was closer to $10.00.

Will not work with the iPhone 5c case

    • Written by from Conyers

I bought the lighting adapter and the Apple iPhone case (made specifically for the iPhone 5C) for my iPhone 5C. I assumed there would be no problem, since I bought an Apple product directly from Apple. However, when you put the adapter on your 30pin cable and then plug it into the iPhone 5c with the case on, the connector is not long enough and will not charge the phone. You must take the case off the iPhone for the adapter to fit. This is crazy, so I will be returning the adapters and maybe the case as well.

    Rubbish

    • Written by from London

I bought this so I could still use my 10 year old (but perfectly functioning) Bose sound dock with the Nano I had to buy when my 10 year old classic iPod was stolen from my house as I slept.
Although it plays the music OK, it no longer charges the iPod while it's on the dock, so that's an end to music at parties after a couple of hours then.
I don't care what Apple says, they don't have the right to remove functionality in this way.

    Apple oversight...

    • Written by from Monterey

You'd think that Apple would have at least thought to make this adaptor work with devices in cases of their own design and manufacture. Sadly, that's not the case. I have the new iPad Air, with Apple's own leather cover, and the lightning end of this adaptor is not long enough to go through the opening in the cover to reach the device. This adaptor is useless, unless you don't mind removing your device from its cover every time you need to charge or sync. Is this kind of inattention to detail what we'll be seeing from Apple in the future? SJ would roll over...
