    Everyone else is correct

There's a lot of reviews about how annoying the need to take off your iPod/iPhone case/cover/whatever is. Totally agree. I wouldn't have posted, but my annoyance is just that great and I needed to vent somewhere. Really Apple? Really. How hard would this have been? How was this not anticipated.

    Almost completely useless.

    • Written by from Petaling Jaya

This has got to be the most useless adapter ever made by Apple. It will NOT fit any Lightning device that has a case/sleeve/cover fitted as this adapter's Lightning end is too broad (like the old 30-pin iPod connector). This means that it is incompatible even with Apple's own Smart cases for the iPads and iPhone 5S/5C cases.

Only useful for totally naked/caseless/sleeveless Lightning based iDevices.

Terrible Product- doesn't deserve one star

    • Written by from New Orleans

The adapter DOES NOT work consistently AT ALL. When I plug it into my iPhone 5s, I get the message, "this accessory is not supported by this device," even though the Lightning was bought from the Apple Store and it is connected to my old 4s charger from the Apple Store. When I remove my Speck case the Lightning works sometimes but not all the time. If Apple insist on charging $39.00 for an adapter it should be at minimum effective and reliable. I'm returning it.

    No problems

I have an iPhone 5 that has an Incase cover. I've never had a problem connecting the adapter with the case in place. In fact, I've never had a problem with any iPhone case made by Incase or "bumper" made by Apple. I believe that the second simplest solution to issues of adapter connectivity with a case is to buy better-designed case - The simplest is just to go without.

    Exactly what I needed

    • Written by from Fairway

This adapter does exactly what the description says it will do. My car is wired for the old 30 pin iPhone and iPod. When I got the iPhone 5 this small adapter perfectly converted my 30 pin so I can now play music through my iPhone 5 in my car.

    Destroyed my lightning port

    • Written by from New York

While this worked with my bose soundock, it eventually wore down the iphone lightning port since the weight of the phone standing up put continuous stress on the port pins. Over only 1-2 months, it started to wear down the port so that now it is very loose when connecting to any USB cable for charging, syncing, etc. Basically in less 2 months of use it has rendered my iphone5 almost incapable of being charged or synced. Even wireless chargers with the charging case will not work because the port will not connect 85% of the time with the standard cable. And I assure you this was not due to significant stress other than just placing in the bose soundock for music.

If you are getting the new apple products with the new ports, I now know you must get docking systems, speakers, etc. that are upgraded as well. The adaptor clearly was not tested correctly and has a significant design flaw. Or this was all orchestrated so that you would be forced to buy a new phone before you are eligible for a contract upgrade. I have never written an online review for anything ever before, so clearly I feel very strongly about this. Do not use this adaptor unless you want to buy a new phone or repair your present one.

    Does the Job

    • Written by from Griffin

I must say that I got this device to use it in the way it was meant to be used: charging, syncing, and playing audio. I have mine for some while now (since I purchased my iPad air the day it came out) and i like it. It works and does what the DESCRIPTION says it will do well for me. I knew I would not be able to use a case with this adapter which was find with me because I was mainly using it with my docking station at night. I mean you're connecting a 30 pin to 8 pin, there's a big difference in size. Which I understand this may be a deal breaker for some, just not for me in my case. It's not like I use an Otterbox with my iPad and it's going to take me several minutes to get it on and off. I use a smart cover with a clear back case.

I've seen a lot of people complaining because they can't play video with this device that clearly states in the description that it doesn't support video output. Um I don't know what to say about that. I do see a adapter that can be used for that in the Apple Store. So I can't speak on that other than the fact it states that it will not support VIDEO OUTPUT.

So basically if you are looking for an adapter to connect to old accessories from previous apple products to: listen to music, charge, or sync than this is the product for you. Otherwise you may want to do a little research and be sure to read before purchasing. Also it states that it may not work properly with all accessories...

Not only is it expensive and overpriced, it does not work with audio or video and won't work with most cases. Then after only a few weeks it died and won't even charge. Totally useless waste.

Does NOT fit into my new iPad Air when I using my iPad smart case. Apple apparently can't even design and engineer even simple products anymore, e.g. see all the complaints about breaking (mine included! for the lightening to USB cable used for charging.

    Wasted my money

    • Written by from Bloomington

I had an original iPad and my wife still has an iPad 2. We have lots of old 30-pin connectors so I thought this would allow me to still use all that and not have to buy a slew of new cables, especially inside they raised the price on the new "lightening" cables. It doesn't work with my camera adapter and I found out (at a presentation) that it doesn't work with the 30-pin VGA adapter either. I don't know what it does work with but I've pretty much assumed it must just be old chargers. And it is too big (at the base) to plug in with my iPad in the case. :(

It doesn't fit anything with a case on it. The pin is too short to reach. I wish I could return it, but I've already thrown away the packaging and receipt.

    • Written by from Obetz

I bought this in 2012 I didn't have any issues until I updated to the new ios7. Since then, I keep getting an error that my adpater is not a licensed device with apple, EVEN though i bought it from the apple store. It doesn't even work with old apple power cords. A complete waste of $30 dollars.

Apple adapter not compatible with Apple cases!

    • Written by from Oviedo

Recently bought Apple leather cases for my iPhone 5 and new iPad air. The Apple 30 pin adapter (to connect previously purchased accessories such as the camera kit) DOES NOT WORK with the Apple cases, because the opening in the cases are not large enough to accomodate the base of the connector, and the connector itself is not long enough to connect when the base of the connector is offset by the width of the case.

Apple is supposed to provide an ecosystem where everything "just works", but they are getting more and more like Microsoft.

Easy to lose, for the price.
