ive had this for just over 3 months and the cable near the lightning end is all scrunched up and now it won't charge my phone unless i spend 5 minutes maneuvering the phone into a specific position so that it will charge and then i can't even touch it otherwise it will disconnect. i like the idea of the lightning over the 30 pin, but in terms of quality and implementation, i am very disappointed by this piece of s product i received.

    Charges quickly BUT...breaks quickly too.

    • Written by from Portland

My wife and I both upgraded our iPhones to 5's in January. Since then, three lightning USB charging cords have simply stopped working. No signs of external damage - they just don't charge anymore. I continue to buy replacements because there aren't really any alternative options. But the repeated drain on my bank account irks me.

Given the many similar stories on this site, I think it's fair to question the quality of the product. Apple - are you paying attention?

After 4 months say goodbye to your charger...

    • Written by from Denver

You gotta end up bendin the cord several ways just to get the dang thing to charge after about 4 months. I wish I never upgraded to the 5. What a terrible decision. And I'm sorry but it ain't worth 21$ dollars, if it breaks after 3-4 months. Change the price and fix this apple, you call yourselves a top company? Right...if I were a new customer, or repeat customer, buy multiple chargers or you're basically s.o.l.

    Faulty cable within a week

    • Written by from Mulberry

Cable went faulty within a week. The network carrier can't get them for three weeks. Poor Apple quality control. Now I have to order one at my own expense because of no stock by my carrier (it's on backorder).

I purchased my iPhone 5 the day it came out and I'm already on my third cable. When it starts to go the cable has to be bent in crazy ways just to get the phone to charge and eventually stops charging all together. I never had any problems with the old charges for iPhone and iPod I have tons around my house that still work from 5-10 years ago. Clearly people are having problems with the lightning cable so I'm not sure why apple hasn't made any changes to the design. It's awful ! :(

Offer a multi-pack, make it easy to get back to normal.

    • Written by from Mountlake Terrace

I've gotten used to having about five unique docking cables, each of different length. I conveniently stash them in the places I use them. Work(super short), home(normal length), in a my cars and a travel accessory dock cable (super long 6'). I had my cable needs taken care of over the years with a few odd apple purchases and from a few other vendors. I'm not griping because you have made this proprietary/authenticated, I just wish there was a way I could get back to normal with a reasonable selection of lengths to get my e-kit back up to speed. If you offered a reasonably priced multi-pack in the let's say $50 range with five cables of multiple lengths that would really make me happy.

Really??? I have 3 iphone 5 cables and all are broke!!

    • Written by from Manteca

I have owned my iphone 5 since it was released and I bought 2 extra charging cables just to have extras. Well glad I did because each one broke FAST at the end that plugs into phone. I have several old cables from other apple products and they all still work great! PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!!! Consumers shouldn't have to buy charging cables every few months!!! I love the Iphone 5 but simply because of charging cable problem, I would take my Iphone 3gs back right now!!!!

Has apple realized how TERRIBLE these are yet?! They break so easily! right underneath the plug into the phone the cord breaks and stops charging the phone I haven't had the 5 very long, obviously, but I've gone through about 5 cords. That's almost $100 in chargers. Disgusting!

    good idea, horrible execution

    • Written by from LIBERTY TOWNSHIP

Love the new phone and liked the new connector... until I caught it in the zipper of my briefcase. Now I have no charging cable and there is no way to purchase a new one; not at the Apple Store, not at Best Buy, AT&T, etc.
Who was the moron who didn't anticipate an immediate need for additional charging cables? This couldn't be anticipated? I have dozens of 30-pin cables for every office, car and room of the house.
I have a great new phone that will soon be a paper-weight until I can get a new cable.

A costly accessory with questionable benefit

    • Written by from Montclair

Paving the way for the future? Perhaps. If so, we can't tell by any increased transfer speed.

The only convenience seems to be the fact that you can connect them either way and the "convenience" of the earphone plug at the bottom. A convenience I would GLADLY give up since it makes ALL holders or docks obsolete. I sit my iPhone 5 at my desk upside down now so I can listen to music with the ghastly named "earpods."

The reason for the low score is not just because of that lack of speed boost that u.s.b. 3 or even Thunderbolt could have provided but availability. If you're going to force folks to not only replace their existing cables but force them to use only yours by including proprietary verification ships in them, you should at least have the decency of making sure your stores have plenty of stock for your costly cables.

Unless you like questions about your new products to be answered by, "I would love to show you this new iDevice but I can't because the battery is already drained."

I don't imagine that would go down well with potential customers which as an Apple device owner we frequently interact with.

    What happened to quality?

    • Written by from WYOMING

Had my original cord for a month until the charging end became disconnected. Bought a new one and now it's starting to disconnect also. Apple really dropped the ball on quality with their recent releases. Fix it.

    Lightning connector fails the test

    • Written by from New York

I've had the new connector for only 2 weeks and the head separated from wire already, it is very flimsy. Now I am forced to buy an attachment to go back to the 30 pin connector, an additional 29.99.
Apple - if the intention was for the consumer to spend more in accessories, then it worked!

    Cables only last 2 months

    • Written by from Mesa

In the time that I have owned an iPhone 5 (so about 6 months) I am now on my 3rd cable... I just got my last cable replaced about 2 months ago and its already stopped working again. My friend is also on his 3rd cable... His literally started smoking yesterday. THESE ARE AWFUL!! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. Especially since its 20$ for one cheap cable.

I'm on my third Lightning cable now, and the first two both had the same problem. The rubber jacket begins to bunch up right at the neck of the Lightning connection. Obviously, there's a lot of torsion at this spot, especially if you use your phone while it is being charged, but there is a clear design problem if these cables are lasting fewer than six months under regular usage.

Apple, please fix the design of these cords. I like your products, and I like the easy Lightning connection, but I do not want to spend $20 on a faulty cable that shouldn't be more than $5 in the first place.

    This cord is awful

    • Written by from Wynnewood

I have gone through THREE of these cords now, and I've had my iphone less than a year. I'm even careful with them...I wrap them loosely, take my case off when it's charging so there's no lateral force on the lightning cable to cord meeting spot...and still it breaks.. I hope you're happy apple, because I'm not going to buy your products anymore. Next time I'm getting a galaxy or a droid. And typically a single review constitutes hundreds of people with the same opinion. Better phone. Better cord.
