iPhone is great, cable is horrible

    • Written by from Chesapeake

I've had my iPhone 5 for about a year now and I like the phone. The problem, however - and it's a MAJOR problem, is that I'm on my way to buy yet another power cord (lightning cord). These things are made so CHEAPLY that they only last a couple of months (if that!). I'm getting ready to buy my 4th replacement for this phone (that's 5 total). When I had my iPhone 4, I NEVER had this problem. The lightning cord bunches up at the end that plugs into the phone and then just stops working. If Apple doesn't fix this problem, I will be forced to look at other options when my contract expires because I will not be forced to keep spending money on a power cord (we all need them, so I guess you got us, right Apple?). When my friends with other type phones ask me if they should change over to the iPhone, I have to tell them about this fiasco. They don't even bother switching over. I don't blame them. Apple, either fix this problem or you will lose this customer.

    Lightning Cable - Poor design

    • Written by from Thorold

I've been an avid Apple guy since 2001. Like many, I switched from PC to Apple computers at the time and vowed to never look back. I've owned 6 Apple computers since - desktops and portables and have always promoted them to friend, family and just about anyone else who would listen. I also own an iPad, 3 Apple TV's and have have and iPhone, iPhone 3, 4 and now the disappointing 5. I have always enjoyed using my Apple products as they've been easy to use and extremely reliable... until now. Shortly after buying my iPhone 5, I discovered that I needed to purchase a small (Apple-branded) adapter in order to use the several accessories I already had (i.e. car chargers, audio adapters for the car, etc. I was bummed out to have paid about $35 for this tiny piece of hardware but then disgruntled when the first one burned out - then the second and finally the third. They actually had little black marks on the contacts that went into the phone. After that, I gave up and purchased new accessories with lightning connectors. I've since gone through 4 or 5 car adapters and now, it's difficult to get a firm connection for charging (something which by the way needs to happen often with the iPhone 5)... Really disappointed with this product overall and humbled to say that I would almost consider falling off my high horse and purchasing the competitors' product which by all accounts is excellent... Hoping Apple finds a solution to this - even if it means going back to the older style connector which worked great and was one of the best designs I've seen.

    ZERO if I could

    • Written by from Clover

Add one more to the long list of reviews trashing these horrible cables. The cable scrunches up at the end, then the rubber coating breaks, then the wires fray. You'll get three months tops just charging it when you go to sleep. Heck of a value proposition.

    awful

    • Written by from Hummelstown

These chargers are awful and begin to show signs of wear within 3months, even if you use them gently. I bought my iPhone in April and the cable broke within 6 months, I am on my second cable - soon to be third since my second one is showing signs of wear. Although Apple replaced my cable since it was under warranty, this wouldn't have been a problem if Apple worked out the faults and created a longer lasting and better quality charging cable.

    These cords deserve no stars

    • Written by from North vancouver

I have 2 iPhone 5s (my own and my work phone). My boss has one and so does my girlfriend; all these cords broke in the same spot within the past month. How exactly does apple intend in fixing this other than trying to get people to spend $30 on a new one?

I think the better question is, how many people intend on swapping over to Samsung or another one of their competitors once their contract runs out? At least 3 people here if they don't keep a steady supply of working cables.

    Worst cable I ever owned.

    • Written by from Auckland

The cable has disintegrated just below the collar where cable attaches to lightning connector, from normal light use, I am gentle with such things. Second cable that's done this. Bad design and low quality insulation material. Way over-priced in the first place. C'mon Apple sort it out and give us an Apple quality cable. I'd like a couple of new ones please. New design, new insulation material, reinforced collar, thanks.

    Worst charger in the world

    • Written by from China Spring

The charger is no good and they only last a couple of weeks. I've been through 4 chargers and they all end up breaking in the same spot. So something needs to be done and get this problem fixed fast!!

    Not worth the price

    • Written by from Hackensack

Apple chargers are all ridiculously overpriced for such poor quality. These chargers develop holes after a few months and are too short.

How many 1-star reviews needed before Apple fixes this?

    • Written by from Highland Heights

If I could give it less than one star, I would. I bought my iPhone 5s ONE MONTH ago. I started receiving an "unsupported" message from my 2012 Honda today - it stopped playing music, both iTunes and Pandora, and would not charge. Nothing fixed it - restarting, resetting, etc. both car and phone. After unplugging my phone a few times, just as gently as I always do, it RIPPED in half where it plugs into the phone. I called support and was told that I was receiving the message because there was something wrong with my CAR, not the cord that had broken in half. I had the same USB cord for my 4s for TWO years and never had a problem, whether in my cars or in my house. Seriously, when is this issue going to be fixed? Ridiculous.

    Terrible Cable

    • Written by from Midland

As many other review has stated; these cables are absolutely terrible. I've purchased both official Apple cables and aftermarket cables. The aftermarket cables are holding up far better than the Apple cables but they still aren't great. The real irony is that most electronics die before the charging apparatus does and I'm on my 8th cable in little over a year. Terrible technology Apple. If someone was fired over Apple maps someone definitely should be fired over this cable. Fix it Apple.

    Lightning cables are absolutely horrible

    • Written by from Kirksville

I have had my iphone 5 for almost a year now and I am on my 8th charging cable for it. This is not cheap at all because each cable costs around $20. If you aren't looking to spend money do not buy an iphone, especially one in the 5th generation. Apple has done absolutely nothing to fix their product.

    Really Apple?

    • Written by from Hatboro

Like other reviewers have stated this cable is absolutely terrible!!! I've never had an issue in the past with the old cables. So of course Apple comes out with a new cable with a built in chip. Now we're all stuck being forced to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a cable which will break in a couple of months. Bravo Apple, Bravo!! Apple needs to just swap out these awful cables for free until they remake them all together.

    Breaks after a few months

    • Written by from San Jose

    Great when it works.

But what is up with the quality? After a few months they wrinkle up right before the lightning end where it connects to the phone, and I have to bend the wire around for a few minutes until I get the perfect angle for it to charge. A few days later, it completely DIED. I disconnected the wire to see what was up and noticed smoke coming out of it?

Dear Apple, if you're going to make a chip that forces us to only buy your cables, MAKE THEM RIGHT.

    Apple should be ashamed

    • Written by from Torrington

I bought my iphone 4 it will be 2 years in May got Ipad for Christmas about 1-2 yrs ago.. We have gone through at least 10 charging cables within the last 2-3 months.. Ridicules .. As expensive as these items are you would think Apple would make a cable that don't break week after week.. I guess their way of making more money.. I have never had as much problems with cable, phones etc than i have had with Apple products.. Next time around i don't see myself buying any more apple products.. I am really disappointed in there products considering their price and all the whoop tee doo about Apple.. I would not even give a star for any of these products..Sorry Apple but... You really aren't worth it.

    Come on apple... Really?

    • Written by from Garden city

Since I've bought my iphone 5 in June 2013, I've went through over 10 chargers. When I had my iphone 4, I used the charger that came with the phone, the 30 pin connector, and it lasted me over a year. I honestly have to say that if you do not announce something about you guys fixing the chargers at your next keynote, I will be quitting apple products and buying a Samsung Galaxy for my next phone. Thanks apple for making me waste more than 200 dollars on chargers.

    • Written by from Holliston

I bought my iphone only 3 months ago and now, BOTH of my lightning chargers are broken. I would prefer to give no stars but that's not an option. Apple, I expect a refund of 30 lightning chargers for the frustration caused here. And next time, make a better charger
