MagSafe 2 - HORRIBLE- You'll need to superglue it to your MBA!

    • Written by from Litchfield Park

I've owned several MacBooks & never gave a 2nd thought about the power adapter until I purchased my MBA 11" & was intro ducted to Apple's worst idea ever called the MagSafe 2. Oddly enough I use my little 11" MacBook Air not as a desktop but as a laptop - literally on my thighs (sarcasm intended) - The problem is the MagSafe 2 is so sensitive that if I shift - it disconnects. If I lift it up to set on an end table to go grab a cup of tea or coffee, the MagSafe 2 disconnects. If I even think about moving the computer it seems to disconnect. It's not so bad side to side (i.e. front/back) or pulled directly straight out from the MBA. However the most common flex a power cord is going to get is up/down & that's where the MagSafe 2 is at it's worst. If it even slightly senses it's going to flex up or down it disconnects. Seems the design in mind was for using the MBA on desks or library tables - i.e. flat surface. The designers forgot what laptops were designed for - LAPS & quasi mobility even when plugged into power. In the MagSafe 2's defense I've read the design flaw is actually with the magnets in the MacBook itself. They are too sensitive or too weak to keep adequate connection with the adapter made worse by the "T" design connector of the MagSafe 2.

there is nothing wrong with this adaptor except the price

    • Written by from Huntsville

The adaptor that came with my mid-2012 MacBook Air is still working perfectly and I travel with it almost every day. The magnet is not as strong as the original MagSafe, but it still works fine. You can find cheaper versions of this adaptor on Amazon, but I suspect your results will vary widely from "completely disaster" to "works reasonably well".

    Breaks Easily

    • Written by from Athens

I've had my macbook air for almost two years now and I had to purchase a new charger yesterday. Mine got the "wrinkles" at the base of the cord closest to the actual charger. One day it was working fine and the next it wouldn't charge at all. I have taken very good care of the cord, never carrying it in my bookbag and never bending the cord while it was charging. After spending over $1000 on a computer you would think the charger would be better made...

    MagSafe 2 is awful

    • Written by

Terrible quality and not durable at all. Frays and breaks in just over a year of use. Not to mention I kept my laptop plugged in at my desk and barely moved it at all. With a $99 price tag, it's pretty clear Apple loves $$$ and not the quality of it's products.

Lasts just a few days over a year

    • Written by from Miami

Since I've had my MacBook Air,I have had to purchase a charger every 13 months. This works out perfectly for Apple since they have a one year guarantee.
Buyer Beware: be prepared to keep buying new ones when the cord frays and stops working.

    Do not recommend!!!!

    • Written by from Hastings

I got my Macbook Air in February of this year. I have had my laptop for less than three months and my charger has already broken once, been spliced, and finally quit working again. I just ordered another charger, and am hoping that it doesnt short out like my first one. Wish I had done my research.

    Piece of Trash

I've had my laptop for 10 months and my charger broke already. Not to mention the weak magnet that will disconnect at the slightest movement.
This needs to be addressed! What the heck Apple?!

refuses to stay connected unless the laptop is completely 100% flat. (for instance falls right off when if I'm trying to work with the computer in my lap). It's driving me crazy!

It's not so bad ... yet!

    • Written by from Calgary

I bought my Macbook Air almost a week ago ... I love love love it. As I am here to rate the power cord, I will say that is is working fine, so far. I used it for the first time this morning and my computer charged with no issues at all. The magnetic part seems to stick pretty good ... at least for today it does. I have read a lot of these reviews and I am worried. I thought about buying another one, but don't think I will now. I'll make due with the one I have. The only thing I can think of is my Macbook Air is the new one that came out, meaning they made improvements to the processor (1.4 vs 1.6) ... maybe they also made enhancements to the power cord.

DO something about this Apple!!!!! This power cord constantly falls out!!!!

    • Written by from Boulder

I purchased this MacBook pro with retina display 2 days ago and have been frustrated at the power cord constantly falling out! I also had it plugged in all last night to find that my machine was only 80% charged this morning! Why are you suddenly creating such an inferior product? don't you test them any more before putting them on the market?- You are really upsetting your customers.

You should do put every available engineer on this problem until it is fixed; do a recall, and show that you deserve your customers' trust.

I am very very very disappointed.

Magnetic plug is a joke! It is TOTAL JUNK!

    • Written by from Alliance

The magnetic plug for the Macbook Air is the worst idea ever conceived. The plug falls out constantly - if you move slightly or move your laptop slightly. What a worthless piece of junk. Will never buy another laptop from Apple until they solve this problem. It's a shame because I LOVE my MacBook Air.

    Really poor product design

    • Written by from Montreal

Adapter failed for no clear reason and now no longer charges my laptop. I'm very careful with my equipment and have never had a problem with any other adapter. The replacement is also shockingly expensive for what it is. Totally unimpressed.

    Fell apart

    • Written by from Hilo

It fell apart! Frayed somehow? The plug is off the floor and drops down to my desk. I set it this way because the thing never stayed plugged in. Now I have to buy a new one with limited funds at that...shame on you Apple for creating great products with not great accessories to work with the products. We spend a good amount of money for quality and that is what we expect all the way down the line, from the laptop to the darn cords we plug into them for a decent charge.

Short Lifespan & Laughably Ridiculous Replacement Cost

    • Written by

I recently switched from Microsoft to Mac for usability reasons, as I am a programmer. I have owned my Macbook Air for 2.5 months now, and the charging cable suddenly stopped providing power. There is no apparent damage to the cable or connectors, it just stopped working. And so I went online to buy a replacement, thinking I must have received a lemon, only to find that it will cost $75 (and hundreds of other users have encountered the same problem). I couldn't help but laugh. I am so thoroughly disappointed in Apple's business policies and apparent lack of concern for its customers' poor experience using their product, that I am contemplating switching back to Microsoft. If nearly 200 people have taken the time to write reviews about this persistent problem, there are most likely thousands who are experiencing it as well, but are simply sucking it up and paying for another. If Apple does not respond to this problem and offer replacements, or lower the price (since each unit probably costs them $1.50 to manufacture), they will be losing me as a customer.

    Cheap/poorly made

    • Written by from Cranston

This thing stinks. It broke and stopped working as the bend in the cord seemed to wear it down. For the cost of Macs, you would think that the cord would really not be a problem. I had switched from other PCs to this first MAC and at least for the cords I am way under-impressed.

So far it's not too bad.

    • Written by from Powell

I've had my 2014 MBA for a little over 2 months, with the charger and so far it's not too bad (the charger anyway).

Granted, the wires and stuff aren't as durable as they should be, but so far it's been working well for me and I do my hardest to make sure my cables don't get tangled and stuff. I plan on getting some accessories that will protect it better of course, but I haven't had any trouble with it. Only thing that could be better about it is a stronger magnet connection or make it connect like how a PC charging cord would.

Bad magnetic connection and too wide- always disconnects!

    • Written by from Burnsville

This is the most annoying charger. I can't believe that a company, Apple, which prides themselves over such a simple, functional, high-quality level of design would release a charger like this! If your leg bumps it even a little (for example if your sitting on the couch with the computer in your lap) it disconnects because of its skinny, long and wide design. Apple- please give everyone who has a 45W MagSafe 2 power adapter a new one, similar to the old ones that are shaped less awkwardly!
