    Did not hold up

The charger barely lasted over a year before going bad. Now I need to pay another $80 on top of the mountains of money I've spent on apple.

    H-O-R-R-R-R-I-B-L-E CHARGER

    • Written by from Chicago

It is unfortunate that our reviews won't affect the consumers purchasing this item because guess what? WE HAVE NO CHOICE! apple has a great device in the Pro retina but the charge is terrible! I literally sat and watched it eat itself. I am always very careful about the way I put it away , trying not to bend or twist it. Still the power cord eats away at itself. I don't know technical terms or anything but the side that goes directly into the computer is WAAAY too thin! I should not have to be purchasing chargers for this stupid kind of reason. There is a fault in the connector.

Scared to buy a 2nd for work.

    • Written by from Coatesville

I have the original 60W MagSafe 2 which came with my Retina 13" MBP I purchased Black Friday/Cyber Monday 2013. Unlike many reviews, I've had no issues with this charger. The magnet is strong, only pulling out when jerked. In fact, if you pull slow, you can actually pull the MBP across a table by the plug. It charges quickly, without getting hot, and the cable looks as new as the day I unpacked it. I used to wrap the cord on the wings, but no longer do so because that's too tight a circle for these tiny wires.

Anyway, I would really like to get a second MagSafe 2 for my work office so I don't have to tote back and forth from home. But I'm trying to figure out if we're looking at two different batches here. Was I just one of the lucky few before Apple farmed this charger out to an incompetent contractor? A few bad reviews in the mix of mostly good, you can chalk up to a few folks who don't know how to use the product But this many Apple Heads can't be falling from the same tree. I'm leery of trying for a 2nd winner.

If someone wants to start a database, we could compare serial numbers and see if there's a connection between series. The number on mine when you unplug the wall prongs/extension cord is: C043485GPJGF288BV

    Worst adapter ever

    • Written by from Harwinton

I hated the previous adapter because it would just fall out if you moved your computer but this one is even worse. This one falls out if you breathe near your computer. I hate it and I can't believe with all the innovative products created by apple they didn't think this was a bad design. I would give zero stars if it was an option.

    WEAK

    • Written by from Fountain Hills

I don't like this connector. It has to make a complete u-turn if the cord needs to go to the right... which seems like its more than 50% of the time. An L shape would have been better.

And I agree it slips off too easily. I just don't expect this kind of poor engineering from Apple. Wow.

I'm not destructive on my equipment, but this charger does not perform long-term. I'm just settling in to purchase my second one in a years time, it's ruining a perfectly good computer.

Cable shield broken within 1 year -> no warranty :-(

    • Written by from Wien

Can only repeat what all the others say, the worst product ever.

I have had 2 Macbooks in the past, this will be my last one. I am not willing to invest 79 Euro on a yearly basis for a bad designed power supply and also to be called a liar by Apple, when they argue its my fault ...

P.S. and can confirm another bad design error : plug is falling out of the macbook whenever you just make a tiny move ... definitely not useable :-(

    Disappointing

    • Written by from Pacifica

My last mac charger lasted 4 and a half years without a scratch. I used this one exactly the same way, I take care of this stuff... 1 Year later the cord was open on both ends and it lasted 3 more months (without moving it, using it only on my desk... awesome new retina macboook pro for desktop.... but it wasn't enough apparently) now it stoped working. 1 year and 3 months!? Really?

    Negative reviews

    • Written by from Coffeeville

The amount of negative reviews on this charger is the reason i decided to write a review. The only issue I have with my charger coming unplugged unintentionally is if I sit with my laptop in my lap and my thigh pushes up on the charger plug, it unhooks pretty easily. But that is a very minor con to a genius break a way design. I've been using this laptop and charger for about 3 months and do not see any issues with it. The only reason I was looking at the charger on here was to see what the little flip out things on it is for. Apparently they're for wrapping the cord around, but I wouldn't suggest using them as they seem they would put stress on the connections.

I've had no problems with any of my adapters

    • Written by from Mountain View

I see so many people complaining about the materials used and how quickly these things wear out. I would like to ask how you all treat your MagSafe2 power adapters? I've had mine for two years now with zero problems. I never wind my adapter around the flip-out plastic pieces on the adaptor, so I'm not putting undue stress on the cabling or connector. The only signs of wear I have with my adapters is the discoloring of the sheathing due to normal handling. I've also never had any problems with the connector coming lose from my notebook.

dangerous (one star because I can't give a negative rating)

    • Written by from Hamilton

I have no complaints about the connector, it is what it is.

The insulation on the power cable is another story. I will shortly be going out to replace the second power adapter due to the rubber insulation completely disintegrating off of the power cable. This leaves the ground completely exposed.

This is three cables in around 12 months. First the insulation starts going yellow and then it starts disintegrating. I fully expect that the cable on the third adapter will start to fail in about 6 months.

At some point past the insulation falling off, the inner cables are going to short (if they're made of the same material) and this will be a fire hazard. I have so far not hit that point.

    Works great!

    • Written by from Clarence Center

I don't know why people have bad reviews on these adapters. My brother has the air with the 45W adapter and it doesn't have any issues. I have a retina pro with the 65W adapter. Compared to PCs, these will actually prevent damage to your computer. If something snags on the cable, it could pull the machine with it, possibly causing you to lose important data if you have a traditional HDD. Or if something hits the adapter hard enough will the computer is charging, there goes your motherboard and about $200+ for a new one and labor. And it's easier to find a replacement because you either have MagSafe or MagSafe 2 types and three wattage ratings per type. My dad has two Dell Precisions, the M4500 and the M4700. They both have to use separate adapters. The only complaint I have about these chargers is the price and the little clamp that doesn't do a good job a holding the cable from unwinding in your case.

The Only Poorly Designed Apple Accessory I Have Ever Owned

    • Written by from Wichita

As much as I love my 13" MacBook Retina, I feel just the opposite about the MagSafe 2 adapter. It falls out of the port with the least effort and I find myself plugging it back in several times a night. The 90 degree plug on my previous MacBook Air was perfect, so why did Apple design and market an inferior failure as a follow-up?

    • Written by from El Paso

My Mac is perfect. Works perfectly. It's fast and beautiful, but the new MagSafe 2 adapter it's a disappointment. I have 2 Macs, an old 2010 Air with the old adapter and it works perfect, it's very hard to unplug. The new design it's so delicate that you can't have it on your lap (as you should because it's called a laptop). Any movement you make, makes it fall out. BIG DESIGN FAILURE.

    Piece of Junk

    • Written by from Portland

I've had my new MacBook Pro charger for about 2 months and I wish my old L shaped charger would fit in my new computer. As the other reviewers have said, this thing falls out all the time. Did the designers only test this sitting upright at a desk? The square shaped charger gets bumped out when you're using your computer on your lap, on your bed, when you lean it up against your couch or bed when you're not using it, or if even a small stack of papers gets in the way of it sitting flat. For a company that is so design-focused, Apple should be embarrassed to have such an ill-conceived product design.

Yeah, no surprise to come on here and see an overwhelming number of 1 star reviews. Don't think I need to repeat the thousands of other people complaining about these overpriced fire starters. Get it together Apple. Make them worth the price, or change the price to match the product. I'd suggest around 5 bucks as they are right now.

    Pretty Good So Far

    • Written by from Winnipeg

I haven't owned it for very long, but so far, it works great. I was moving some cords around and it "mag-safed" out of the computer which showed me the principle of the thing. It stays plugged in otherwise and it's not too hard to insert. I find it slightly expensive, but I think all chargers are.

    Magsafe 2 what a joke

    • Written by from leeds

It's useless, really, it is. Mine lights green but does not charge / lights orange but does not charge / does not light but still charges / does not light and doesn't charge... the only answer seems to be to wiggle it. I explained all this on the phone to Apple and pointed out that all of these were very well known issues... the Apple guy said 'Really??', I had to laugh.
