NEW USB SuperDrive DOES NOT WORK

    • Written by from Mississauga

I purchased my first APPLE COMPUTER since the MAC PLUS. PLUS a NEW USB SUPER??DRIVE.
DRIVE WORKED WELL for ripping 15 cd's to iTunes.
    Then the PROBLEMS STARTED.
Now if I put in a disk it spins, clunks and clunks then spits the disk back out.
NOW I UNDERSTAND why APPLE PUSHES the EXTENDED WARRANTY.
I have spent more than 6 hours on line with Apple Technical support. (They have been very professional, patient, and polite)
BUT obviously they don't read these reviews. (This is a bad product and Apple should be embarrassed to put their name on it.)
NOW I know why THEY REMOVED IT from the MAC MINI.
I'm taking it back to the Apple store tomorrow.
SHOULD HAVE STUCK WITH a WINDOWS PRODUCT; At least in my experience they work past the warranty period.

    It isn't working

    • Written by from Avila Beach

I bought my iMac in December 2014 and shortly thereafter bought the USB SuperDrive. I have been busy doing other things so
didn't try to use it until today. I plugged it in to the port on the back of my iMac then put in a photo cd. It accepted it, made a few noises for a few second and then automatically ejected it. So I tried a dvd and it also ejected right away.

It is a pretty simple program and there isn't much that I could do to mess it up. It is messing up all by itself.

    Awesome CD/CD Reader/Writer

    • Written by from North Richland Hills

I purchased this to use with my new Macbook Pro. I have hundreds of music CDs to upload into iTunes. It works flawlessly and I highly recommend it. Disregard the folks who don't know how to eject it...that's a user problem, not a hardware problem. I like the fact that there is no drawer to slide out and in for loading my CDs. I realize that hardware can sometimes have a bug; I'm sure the Apple store would fix the problem if the user were to return it. They've been most helpful to my friends, one of whom had an issue with her iPad. I could not believe how helpful and generous they were to her. I will update my review if anything changes; however, I have educated myself before using my hardware to ensure proper use of it.

I love the SuperDrive. It is worth every dime I spent on it. I love all my Apple products (2 iPads, 1 iPhone 5, 2 iPods, my MacPro 13.) High quality and outstanding performance. You won't go wrong with Apple. It may be expensive at the outset, but in the long run, it will last much longer than its competitors products.

    Trouble ripping audiobooks

    • Written by from MITCHELLVILLE

Just bought a 5k mac after retiring my old Imac-2007. I am an avid audiobook listener so I need to rip them into itunes so that I can listen on my device. The drive seems to rip about half of the cd then ejects for no reason. This is a brand-new audiobook that has never been touched and has no scratches. I took it back to my old mac with the built in dvd drive and it burned the disks that were ejected by this drive without any problems. This drive is going back tomorrow.

    Poor Quality

    • Written by from Harleysville

I purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive and after just a few months it broke and the drive just kept spinning. If you want a drive that actually has blu-ray capability and will last go with something else. Please don't waste your money on this.

Works well, mostly, but you need to be careful.

    • Written by from Cleveland Hts

There is one huge design flaw in the SuperDrive, and periodically it drives me crazy: there is no way to manually force the drive to eject a disc. I have a huge collection of DVD-Rs that I burned roughly ten years ago, after I switched away from VHS but before I took up digital recording, and I have been trying to rip them to digital files. Most of the time, this works well, but occasionally a disc is corrupted. When that happens, the SuperDrive spends half an hour or more fussing with the disc and refusing to eject it, and all of the computer-based ways to eject the disc stop working (and I have tried ALL of them). Most CD/DVD drives have a small hole that you can poke the end of a paperclip into, to manually force the disc to eject. The SuperDrive is missing that safety mechanism. So be warned. Now, the rest of the time, it performs very well. This, however, is a glaring problem, because CDs and DVDs DO corrupt --often when you least expect it -- and when that happens, the SuperDrive simply can't handle it.

    This is an awesome Drive!!

    • Written by from Dinuba

People are just not knowledgeable on what this drive can and cannot do!!! This drive works flawlessly and ejects perfectly each and every time bar none!! Most negative reviews exist because the owners don't understand or know their systems well enough to operate them.

    Flawless!

    • Written by from Saskatoon

Bought this drive with my new Mac and have used it to put over 400 CD's into my iTunes library. I understand others have had trouble with this drive but my own experience has been great. Based on my heavy usage I'd rank this drive as superb. No regrets.

    Apple USB

Apple USB Superdrive not working after two weeks and a couple dozen CD uploads. CD stuck inside and I am afraid I have lost it based on the other reviews.

    Works PERFECT for me!

    • Written by from Bronx

I recently purchased a MacBook Air and I totally freaked out that there was no drive to import CDs (yes I still buy hard copies lol). I received the Apple USB SuperDrive and so far it is doing everything that is expected. I was able to install my wireless printer set-up disc, I watched a DVD and I imported a CD. So in the least words possible, I give it 5 stars!!!

In despair-I love mac but super drive is horrible!

    • Written by from El Cerrito

Not again. My super drive is not working yet again and i just exchanged it barely a month ago. The apple rep was pretty good about exchanging it for me; however I lost one of my workout dvd then since the option was either to break the super drive and retrieve my dvd or exchange it for a new one. Obviously i went with the later option but between then and now, my new super drive stopped working again.I have another dvd stuck in the super drive and I am pretty sure I will lose this one too.Does anyone know of any other virtual dvd drives that is compatible with the macbook, that i could use..do let me know. Thanks a bunch!

    Nice Little Drive

    • Written by from Richmond

I got this for my 21.5 Inch iMac and I love it, it does everything I want it to do perfectly I haven't had any problems as is it takes about 2 minutes to upload a CD too iTunes and it takes about 2.5 to burn a CD from iTunes and it works nice and quickly for playbacks for like CD's and Movie's. It has a nice slim size and fits on my desk quite well so overall I am pretty happy with it.

    Unimpressed with the Super Drive

    • Written by from Minneapolis

Just purchased the USB SuperDrive from my local Apple store. Brought it home plugged it in and started to download some CD's into ITunes. First couple of CD's went really quickly, burn speed were reaching 14/15 x. Put in my third CD and heard a fairly loud noise that didn't sound quite right. Pulled the CD out, put it back in, noise was gone, but the CD download time was now barely hitting 4/5x. Unplugged it. Restarted computer. Same issue, but now it is freezing up. Then I read the reviews. Sorry Apple. This product is coming back.

Exactly what I thought it would be!

    • Written by from Moorhead

Easy to install, easy to use, and it matches the look of my iMac 27 very well.

As far as I'm concerned, it performs exactly as I would expect it to.

My one complaint is that the cord is RIDICULOUSLY short... that's not much of a complaint, though. Ha!

I wouldn't hesitate for a moment buying another one of these devices. Carefully read the product description before you buy it, but then proceed with confidence!

    SuperDrive Should be False Advertising

    • Written by from Goleta

I picked this up for my wife's 5k iMac so she could easily burn DVDs for her photography clients. The high point is what you usually get with Apple products: It's definitely sleek and sexy. Beyond that, the product reminds me of how exciting 2007 was, before we had Blu-Ray burners and USB 3. With USB 2 transfer speeds and no Blu-Ray codec, this should be no more than $25. It is an embarrassment and a shame to Apple.

    Fragile

    • Written by from San Jose

It is sleek looking, and matches the MacBook Air, but I'm on my 4th unit after being replaced repeatedly under the MBA AppleCare in the past 2years. One replacement came DOA. It won't accept DVDs just spits it out. When it does accept the disc, DVD Player can't play it.

Unit stays home most of the time and when in transport, carried in its original shipping foam-encapsulated box. Still fails after few use.

There must be other portable USB SuperDrive that works on a Mac that is far more reliable. Get those instead, and give up the sleek looks. This model is junk.

Don't Be Dissuaded by Ill-Informed Reviewers

    • Written by from Mesa

This superdrive works so flawlessly, you don't even have to think about it. It is compatible--as advertised--with Mac systems lacking a built-in optical drive, so it may not work with your Mac that has a dead built-in drive, nor with your PC (Windows-type) computer, nor while plugged into the radio of a 1957 Chevy. It also may not give the best results when it's upside down under your blankets with a poodle sleeping on it. It may not act reliably when used with a hub or if you cover your discs with glitter and glue before inserting them. Potential purchasers, don't be dissuaded by reviewers who aren't using this device along with the proper hardware. I bought it; I plugged it in; I inserted a disc into it; I selected "burn." How hard is that, people, honestly? Ask someone to review your BRAIN before you berate a product that does exactly what it is designed to do.

I have had no problems with this SuperDrive. It works very well when transferring movies to digital. It plays everything but blurays but then that doesn't bother me since I'm transferring to digital anyway. Great product for the price.

    Why???

    • Written by from SUGAR LAND

Well, i am typically satisfied with apple product but this drive is a cd devouring machine. If your beloved "old" cd is sitting around waiting to be added to your device be ware. The drive will make an engraving due to balancing issues on your disc. Here i am hoping to ensure the life of my favorite album of all time and it makes a horrendous noise and i force eject my cd. when i observe it. i notice an engraving in the middle of this disc. my life is now pointless. good bye world. thanks apple. you win again.
