    No Manual Eject Button!

    • Written by from Hopkinton

Have a brand new (Sept. 2013) MacBook Air and Apple USB Superdrive.
Cannot eject the DVD from the drive. "Eject DVD" in "Controls Menu" is greyed out.
There is no way to manually eject he DVD; no eject button, no pin hole.
    Lousy design !!!

    It does not work properly

    • Written by from Providence

I'm sure many folks get this and it works just fine - but if you read the reviews, including this one, you'll find that it's a gamble to but it. Many simply do not work properly. In my case, it will read discs, but in some cases does not. I've returned purchased discs to find out that they play fine in other drives. So I'd have to conclude that those who say Apple messed this one up are quite correct. What I'd like is for Apple to help out those of us with problems, and fix the problems for those of you considering buying this.

it need more time to design

    • Written by from Flint

    it looks nice
    perfect shape
    perfect speed
    perfect weight
    BUT :
you better make the whole cable get disconnect from it ,you know a side of the cable is just attached to the super drive and when you are handing it or packing it in your bag the attached part will get wasted.put a nice small cable but not attached to drive.

    Really ?!

    • Written by from Tucson

By far the weakest apple product I have ever owned. If it was just bad outright it would make some sense, but it infuriatingly all over the map. Works rarely, then won't read disks, but then will with restart, but then stops after 2 disks. Every glitch is a time sucker because it struggles with a disk for long periods unsuccessfully , while refusing to respond to stop or eject commands. Looking online reveals a host of problems with this piece of hardware. Inexcusable as optical drives are such a mature technology.

    Shameful performance. Disgraceful product.

    • Written by from San Francisco

I have already had two replacements for this product. The original was DOA. The second lasted a week before dying. Four or five months later, the third is stuttering and spewing out faulty CDRs. Even when it successfully burns a disc, it takes at least five or six times as long as my other old drive from a different manufacturer.
Looks nice, but is woeful. Reliability is zero. One cannot trust any CDR one burns with this machine. I have owned at least half-a-dozen external drives over the years, and none has been worse than this contraption. Atrocious. One star is almost too generous.

I bought this months ago when my CD/DVD player on mac got object stuck into. This will not take a CD or DVD. Can not get a CD blank or a new one to see if or how it works. tried everything. won't work. It is really less than a one star!!!!! That was $79 plus tax and shipping wasted.

I purchased this drive because I wanted to install some software. My dad has a LG external drive and it's great. However the download speed is no where's near this thing! I have heard that the CD's or DVD's can get stuck in the device and this happened to my uncle but he too it back and they pulled one off the shelf and said "here you go". Very impressed with Apple's products. You get what you pay for!

    Won't accept a dvd with a label

    • Written by from Howell

Pretty much a piece of doo-doo that has a slot that is either too small or the feeder is too dumb to pull in a dvd with a paper label. In their design-is-everything mindset, the geniuses at Apple appear to be once again oblivious to the real world.

    Problems with CD's

    • Written by from Bentonville

While the SuperDrive is adequate for copying files or installed a rare CD-based application, it is OK. However, as a method for uploading CD's to i-Tunes, it is poor. It does not have the speed, causing it to get "caught" on a track, spinning for extended periods of time and ultimately scratching the CD. This has happened to me twice in the past week, with 2 brand new, in shrink-wrap CD's. It did not upload all the tracks before "eating" the CD and creating permanent scratches that are deep enough to destroy the CD.

At first we plugged it in and put a disc in it but it didn't show on the computer and we couldn't even here the disc moving after a while. We couldn't eject it, but by some miracle it finally started working after a dozen tries.

I bought this for my Air because I am going to need it going off to college, and it is so fast! I think Apple was very smart when they removed the internal CD drives, and started selling these! Good job once again, Apple!

This is a good product for what it does (play dvds, install cd-roms, etc), but I really wish it supported Blu-Ray play, which it doesn't. In fact, I can't find anything on the market that reads blu-rays for a mac. When will this change?! My only other complaint is that the usb cord is very short and makes it difficult to store it in the airline seat pocket for dvd play on an airplane. Anyway, it does what it advertises it does, so I can't complain too much. Good addition to my macbook air.

New. Used twice WILL NOT WORK!

    • Written by from Guyton

    Two things.....
This is a simple machine to use, and after two uses, it WILL NOT LOAD a CD.
I have loaded two software discs ... and this will not load another. There is not a DVD/CD in this device. Just in case, I have chosen EJECT, and nothing happens, and it will not accept my software CD.

Ridiculous. This is supposed to be the superior product !

It doesn't work! Tried following instruction booklet and several hours of searching for why it refuses to play the DVD's that work on a PC. This unit must be defective so I'm returning it tomorrow. My new Retina McBook Pro seems to be incompatible with this Apple USB SuperDrive...too much effort in vain! (I knew I should have insisted on the sales person helping at the store but she said it's a simple "plug and play"! Sorry...it doesn't play!!!

    arghhhhhh - attached cable

    • Written by from Winnipeg

I love to sit with my laptop on my lap beside an end table and put my feet up. That's pretty much not possible to do and use this device because the attached cable is so short. I generally don't buy devices that have attached cables because ultimately the weak point is the point of attachment of the device to the cable. As soon as that wears out, you are in trouble. I'd much much rather have an outlet there, so that you can choose alternate cables, or at least replace a cable if you have a problem.

A 3 foot cable would much better suit my needs, so I find that this is a huge deficiency in this product.
