after a few months won't work

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I have to say that this product is bad. I started using in it with iMac 2012, because this computer doesn't come with a DVD drive. I give it a try. After a few months stop working, showing the message the device needs more power or connect to power cord.
I brought it to the Apple store and guess what it works on a Macbook air. The genius guy told me that might be the computer, also told me that I have to unplug any USB connection to see if this works. No luck.

    Works just fine.

I like the eject-less button feature. This device has a very clean design and looks perfect sitting next to my Macbook Air. I have no complaints. It does exactly what it is supposed to accomplish.

    spins but won't eject cd

    • Written by from auburn

It is only the 2nd time I've used it! I ripped some MP3s from a CD to my MacBook Air. It worked fine. But when I went to burn the MP3s to a CD using the USB Superdrive it got part way then gave me an error and wouldn't complete nor eject. I have tried everything to eject it (short of taking it apart). When I plug it in it spins around and makes noise, but doesn't recognize anything is in there. Which is why I suspect it won't let me eject it. So not sure what to do now. I would suspect a manual eject function would be helpful.

Not as good it is said to be

    • Written by from Ozone Park

Now at first it works great because it just came out of the box, but when you get a cd/dvd stuck in there what are you suppose to do? I state this question because unlike many other drives there isn't any eject button. Also the crazy thing is that i had to use my dads dell to get the dvd ejected when this is made for apple crazy right? I would advice if you like me with a Retina 15' MacBook Pro buy another companies usb drive and save yourself the trouble because now the same APPLE USB DRIVE isn't showing up on my APPLE COMPUTER.

    Very pleased

    • Written by from Portland

I've recently purchased the drive and have listened to around 60+ CDs from store quality to backups made. From the reviews I was expecting problems, but I have not had one problem with any of the CDs. All were readable. I'm impressed at the speed while importing to make backups.

    People are not very smart

    • Written by from Hammond

The reviews bashing this thing is nuts!!!!!! People complaining bc it doesn't have a eject button.. Seriously? If you knew 1/10 of anything about a Mac, you would know you can right click on the disc icon on the desktop and click EJECT!!!! Secondly, if the cord is too short for your use, buy a 2 dollar male to female USB adapter!!!!!!!!!!!! Third, take a chill pill, of course it doesn't work with your 1990 Mac desktop, the firmware is completely out of date.. Fourth, IT IS A DVD PLAYER, NOT A BLURAY PLAYER, of course it doesn't play BluRays. No where does it even lead you to believe it plays them. Apple can't just slap a BluRay drive in it.. It's called copyright laws. Sony owns the rights to BluRay... Tell them about it..

    It's a perfect fit.

    • Written by from Helena

It performs flawlessly and looks beautiful doing it, as is the standard for Apple.

Pros: Quite, Compact, Unobtrusive, Simple, Pro, A match for the MacBook Pro.

Cons: There doesn't appear to be a manual eject...I don't know if this will ever be a problem. ...an green light similar to the Magsafe would be a nice bonus.

    Piece of absolute garbage

    • Written by from Oakland

If I could give this not superdrive no stars, I would. I'm on my 4th one and it doesn't work properly. The first two just stopped working after about sic=x months. Half the time, the Mac doesn't recognize the superdrive when you plug it in. Half the time it doesn't recognize the DVD. When you're using the superdrive to play a DVD and you plug the Mac into a power source, you get a player error message and it crashes. You unplug the superdrive it and plug it back in and nothing. The Mac doesn't recognize the player and you can't eject the DVD by any method.

    No Manual Eject Button!

    • Written by from Hopkinton

Have a brand new (Sept. 2013) MacBook Air and Apple USB Superdrive.
Cannot eject the DVD from the drive. "Eject DVD" in "Controls Menu" is greyed out.
There is no way to manually eject he DVD; no eject button, no pin hole.
    Lousy design !!!

    It does not work properly

    • Written by from Providence

I'm sure many folks get this and it works just fine - but if you read the reviews, including this one, you'll find that it's a gamble to but it. Many simply do not work properly. In my case, it will read discs, but in some cases does not. I've returned purchased discs to find out that they play fine in other drives. So I'd have to conclude that those who say Apple messed this one up are quite correct. What I'd like is for Apple to help out those of us with problems, and fix the problems for those of you considering buying this.

    it looks nice
    perfect shape
    perfect speed
    perfect weight
    BUT :
you better make the whole cable get disconnect from it ,you know a side of the cable is just attached to the super drive and when you are handing it or packing it in your bag the attached part will get wasted.put a nice small cable but not attached to drive.

    Really ?!

    • Written by from Tucson

By far the weakest apple product I have ever owned. If it was just bad outright it would make some sense, but it infuriatingly all over the map. Works rarely, then won't read disks, but then will with restart, but then stops after 2 disks. Every glitch is a time sucker because it struggles with a disk for long periods unsuccessfully , while refusing to respond to stop or eject commands. Looking online reveals a host of problems with this piece of hardware. Inexcusable as optical drives are such a mature technology.

    Shameful performance. Disgraceful product.

    • Written by from San Francisco

I have already had two replacements for this product. The original was DOA. The second lasted a week before dying. Four or five months later, the third is stuttering and spewing out faulty CDRs. Even when it successfully burns a disc, it takes at least five or six times as long as my other old drive from a different manufacturer.
Looks nice, but is woeful. Reliability is zero. One cannot trust any CDR one burns with this machine. I have owned at least half-a-dozen external drives over the years, and none has been worse than this contraption. Atrocious. One star is almost too generous.
