More expensive than the cheap competition, but...

It's faster, nice quality and most importantly, doesn't require the dual USB cable some of the cheep 3rd party drives need for the extra power required for reliable operation. Nice product, highly recommended.

    Good solid drive

Have used a few other DVD/CD burners but find Apple's USB SuperDrive to be a very reliable unit in comparison. It may not be the fastest burner out there, but it's reliability more than makes up for it.

    outstanding product

My only complaint is the short cord. Otherwise it is very quiet, very fast, and works effortlessly. And $79.00 is not expensive. If you think it is, buy a effing Dell.

NO BUGS, NO SPACE PROBLEMS, NO BUTTONS, NO SOFTWARE?

    • Written by from SHAVER LAKE

I HAVE PURCHASED MANY SO CALLED EASY CD / RW COMPONENTS LIKE THIS THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH IBM AND MAC THAT EITHER HAD HATCHES OR BUTTONS THAT GOT IN THE WAY. I HAVE SEEN WHERE THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE SOFTWARE BUT HAVE NOT NEEDED IT AND IT FITS ON TOP OF MY EXTERNAL HARD RIVE ON MY MINI. THE BEST STACK YOU COULD WANT AND ALL IT NEEDS IT TO BE ABLE TO HOOK UP TO THE IPHONE AS A MONITOR AND I WOULD NOT NEED A EXTERNAL MONITOR. EVERYTHING I MENTIONED WORKS SEAMLESSLY TOGETHER. I LIKE THE LOOK,SPEED,SIZE,EASE BUT I AM LEAD TO BELIEVE YHERE IS SOFTWARE AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS SOFTWARE I AM MISSING?
IT IS ALMOST TOO EASY AND I FEEL LIKE I AM MISSING SOMETHING.

    Superdrive needs smart humans !

    • Written by from Seattle

This optical drive by Apple has been, by far, the best driver I've ever had. Prior to purchase I read the reviews here and was surprised to see how many people had problems ejecting a "non-DVD" disc (i.e. game, software load, app manager, etc) ... There is waaaay too much misinformation and speculation being made by wannabe, hot potato users. The drive works perfectly and ejects ANY disc on demand ... only requirement... Human needs to be SMARTER than Driver ! I've seen knuckle heads suggesting the total disassembly of the unit to remove a disc ! Why own a computer if you're still in the stone age?

The optical drive will recognize DVD and non-DVD discs, common sense dictates that if the drive doesn't recognize a disc as a DVD...you're not going to succeed in commanding the DVD controller to eject it. It's not a technically DVD ! (note: that is whether or not it is a DVD!...Sometimes a DVD format may be incorrect, so it gets disqualified),

All you need to do is go to the disc icon on your desk top (if you've selected in "System Preferences" to show the disc icon on the desk top) or just hit "Command+up arrow" till you reach the disc and drivers level, then right click on the disc icon and select eject.

The DVD controller will grey out the Eject option so you cannot do anything there. This process is very similar to PC formats except that PC always puts a disc icon on your desk top. Apple gives you the choice.

    So simple to use.

I really like the simplicity of this drive. I just plug it into my Mac Mini and it just works! Also, I have noticed it is very quiet. I find the attached usb cable to be more than adequate. Highly recommend.

    Excellent Drive

    • Written by from Marshalltown

This drive works remarkably well for the couple of times a year I need a disk drive. It reads and writes very fast, is compact and portable if necessary and looks great with the MacBook Air and new MacBook Pro. Only complaint would be the short cord, it is usable but if it was about ten inches longer it would be great.

As for the person who bought an Air and didn't realize there was no drive, I would take little stock in anything they might have to say.

    Great product.

    • Written by from Grandville

I recently bought this to install software on my new MacBook Pro with retina display and it does its job quite well. Although it still irks me that such a device is even necessary in this day and age. Sure improved portability is a nice feature but taking away the optical disk drive to do so seems silly. Overall no complaints, however.

Perfect DVD drive for Macbook Air Users

    • Written by from Birmingham

For some reason, the burning speed is much faster on this SuperDrive than other standalone DVD drives you find on Amazon. I tried the Amazon Basic DVD drive, but the speed is so slow that I had to return it. The Apple USB SuperDrive doesn't have this problem, though.
