    Faulty Unit

    • Written by from GREEN VALLEY

I bought an Apple USB SuperDrive one week after purchasing a new iMac in order to install new software for my business since the new iMac's do not have a CD/DVD drive. The USB SuperDrive does not work. I insert a disc, it makes a few whirring sounds, then spits out the disk. I have tried it with multiple discs with the same results. It looks as though other users have had the same experience.

    Eject button

    • Written by from Lake Elmo

Please Apple ... your insistence on making everything so easy to use, is actually maling them harder to use. A simple eject button would cost a nickel and save countless hours of searching for the onscreen eject button that always seem elusive.

Just got a new MBPr, and found that to use my old copy of Windows 7 in Bootcamp, I'd need an external drive. I thought I could get away with using my superdrive on my old MBP or iMac, but...of course not.

Bought it, hooked it up, and loaded Windows. Ejected disk just fine. No problems whatsoever. I'll probably use it for burning iTunes CD's, as I don't watch movies much on my computer.

    Garbage: ZERO STARS

    • Written by from Lethbridge

Got one; wouldn't play or even read any disc. Had it replaced.
    Just tried replacement: same results.
This thing just makes a whole bunch of noise and then spits the disc out. Total waste of my time and money.
Tried DVD, DVD-R, CD, CD-R. nothing is readable.

    Best For My MacBook Airs

    • Written by from Conroe

These have been great to have as I have a MBA at home and another one at the office, and they are speedy replacements for the old DVD/CD burners I used to own that took up valuable space. These fit right underneath my Apple displays and have a very small footprint and an extremely low profile. I love mine and being bus powered they are absolutely so handy to have and use. I couldn't get by without them and I'll never go back to anything else.

Very nice, with one huge flaw

    • Written by from Albany

The Apple SuperDrives look great, work very smoothly, and are very quiet when spinning a disk. They would be perfect, if not for the remarkably ridiculous fact that they do not work on a Mac that already has an optical drive built in. Apple's built-in optical drives are cheap and fail more often than they should, so don't get this as a replacement. The decision to block these for Macs with optical drives is just dumb.

    Superdrive

I am not really sure why some people are complaining, Ive yet to have very many issues with any Mac product. This Driver works great on my 2012 Macbook Air. I wonder if some people didn't read what it's compatible with first or if they are just using it wrong. This is pretty simple to use and if you need a longer cord just match up a male to female for a longer cord. Ejecting isn't hard most have a eject button on their keyboard just right click on the disc icon. That's what I've done and had zero issues. I mainly burn from CD's to my iTunes. If your having issues just call a apple rep or go to the store they are always helpful to me.

I cannot speak, of course, to the longevity of the drive because mine is fairly new. However, the intuitive nature of this drive as it conforms its actions to the values of the disk you have inserted is exactly what I was looking for. Play a movie; no problem. Burn a CD; no problem. Transfer files; no problem. Insert disk. Follow natural course of action. Eject disk. If you are familiar with the Mac world, this is a great drive. Hope it stands test of time, too. (The learning curve for former Windows devotees is same as learning curve for Mac itself; that is, top menus and such. No magic; just solid solution to your drive needs.)

    Nice Drive

    • Written by from Bakersfield

This drive works great with my new Mac Mini. I purchased it with my new Mac Mini to make copies to CD-Rom of my pictures, and movies. Just like the descriptions say, just plug it in, and go. The only reason i gave it four stars, was because of the USB cord. That thing is only about three inches long! Really? My personal opinion is that it needs to be a little bit longer to make it more functional to use. Other than that, it's a great product!

    works great, works quietly

Bought Apple's external optical drive for a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina as while I don't use a drive often, I do have DVD's I want to watch (don't care for BlueRay) and the occasional transfer of software from a CD. I've played about 30 DVD's so far and it's done very well. I initially compared it to another well rated drive, with a single USB cord, from another prominent company and preferred Apple's (obviously). The extra $40 was worth it. I like that when playing a DVD on Apple's drive it is near soundless; I realize this only matters if you are playing quiet music or you are sensitive to extraneous hums and clicks when you sit near an object, but to me it matters. I also like that Apple's doesn't have extra moving parts like a tray for the DVD that has to be ejected and pushed in each time. Lastly, the aesthetics are far better on Apple's (like all their products)... it isn't a light weight cheap plastic box, it feels solid and it looks sleek.

    Needs Blu-Ray capability

    • Written by from Carnation

The drive is great for CD's and DVD's. I use it on my Mac Mini Server.

Without Blu-Ray, most of our new movies can't be watched. When the *box rentals stop providing DVD and go entirely to Blu-Ray, this will have to go in the drawer with the external 3.5" floppy drive.

Mine worked for a year and a half. I tried to rip a DVD once and it stopped working meaning it would not accept any DVD after that. Not buying an Apple DVD player anymore. Buy a cheap $30 instead.

I purchased this drive to load software and to view dvd movies. It works with my macbook air with absolutely no issues. I have noticed that some people have complained about it, but I suspect it's because they are using an older mac and this drive is compatible with Apple's newest offerings.

    • Written by from SAUSALITO

Does anyone care at Apple that this is not working. Used twice, got a new computer went to used the superdrive and it said no can used (dead). Ok guy lets get something that works and or take this thing off the market as you do not have this thing working for all the great Apple customers. Let's get it corrected and make it work every time it's needed. Sorry but this thing is wrong
