    Trouble ripping audiobooks

    • Written by from MITCHELLVILLE

Just bought a 5k mac after retiring my old Imac-2007. I am an avid audiobook listener so I need to rip them into itunes so that I can listen on my device. The drive seems to rip about half of the cd then ejects for no reason. This is a brand-new audiobook that has never been touched and has no scratches. I took it back to my old mac with the built in dvd drive and it burned the disks that were ejected by this drive without any problems. This drive is going back tomorrow.

    Poor Quality

    • Written by from Harleysville

I purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive and after just a few months it broke and the drive just kept spinning. If you want a drive that actually has blu-ray capability and will last go with something else. Please don't waste your money on this.

    Apple USB

Apple USB Superdrive not working after two weeks and a couple dozen CD uploads. CD stuck inside and I am afraid I have lost it based on the other reviews.

In despair-I love mac but super drive is horrible!

    • Written by from El Cerrito

Not again. My super drive is not working yet again and i just exchanged it barely a month ago. The apple rep was pretty good about exchanging it for me; however I lost one of my workout dvd then since the option was either to break the super drive and retrieve my dvd or exchange it for a new one. Obviously i went with the later option but between then and now, my new super drive stopped working again.I have another dvd stuck in the super drive and I am pretty sure I will lose this one too.Does anyone know of any other virtual dvd drives that is compatible with the macbook, that i could use..do let me know. Thanks a bunch!

    Unimpressed with the Super Drive

    • Written by from Minneapolis

Just purchased the USB SuperDrive from my local Apple store. Brought it home plugged it in and started to download some CD's into ITunes. First couple of CD's went really quickly, burn speed were reaching 14/15 x. Put in my third CD and heard a fairly loud noise that didn't sound quite right. Pulled the CD out, put it back in, noise was gone, but the CD download time was now barely hitting 4/5x. Unplugged it. Restarted computer. Same issue, but now it is freezing up. Then I read the reviews. Sorry Apple. This product is coming back.

    SuperDrive Should be False Advertising

    • Written by from Goleta

I picked this up for my wife's 5k iMac so she could easily burn DVDs for her photography clients. The high point is what you usually get with Apple products: It's definitely sleek and sexy. Beyond that, the product reminds me of how exciting 2007 was, before we had Blu-Ray burners and USB 3. With USB 2 transfer speeds and no Blu-Ray codec, this should be no more than $25. It is an embarrassment and a shame to Apple.

    Fragile

    • Written by from San Jose

It is sleek looking, and matches the MacBook Air, but I'm on my 4th unit after being replaced repeatedly under the MBA AppleCare in the past 2years. One replacement came DOA. It won't accept DVDs just spits it out. When it does accept the disc, DVD Player can't play it.

Unit stays home most of the time and when in transport, carried in its original shipping foam-encapsulated box. Still fails after few use.

There must be other portable USB SuperDrive that works on a Mac that is far more reliable. Get those instead, and give up the sleek looks. This model is junk.

If I could give it zero stars, I would

    • Written by from Canton

This drive is terrible and doesn't live up to Apple standards. Completely unreliable drive. It routinely fails to even read discs and then is unable to eject discs and sits there attempting to read, eject, read, eject, etc. Just spent an hour trying to get a dvd out of the drive. Save your money and buy something else.

brand new from the box. Wanted to burn a video I made on iMovie. Placed my DVD in, half way through burning, it failed. And now it doesn't eject my CD. I have tried it hundreds of times. Given up. This is a rubbish product. Wake up Apple.

Serious mechanical issues inserting discs. Scratched them!

    • Written by from GILFORD

Bought the Apple USB Superdrive in late 2014 to go with my new iMac 27". I found after only several uses it had serious mechanical issues accepting discs. I only used the superdrive several times and now won't work. I used it twice for software installation, and once to a burn disc. I had trouble inserting the disc to be burned, and then had terrible trouble inserting any more discs. Seems like it has serious mechanical issues or just wouldn't read discs. The last attempt left the blank disc that I tried to burn scratched and unusable. Tried inserting more discs and it just kept scratching them! I could understand two years or so down the road this happening, but not straight out of the box. Now I have to figure out how to either return it, or get it fixed. Pain!!!

    Not up to Apple standards.

    • Written by from North York

Consider a less expensive alternative. Hasn't burned discs properly for years compared to the four other Apple computers I've owned with built in drives. It's recently decided that it can't find disc burning software at all.

I use this with my 2011 Air and have a fairly new 2014 Pro with built in drive to hold me for now, but worry about compact disc support going forward.

I feel Apple has ignored possible quality control issues with external CD support in their move to all things iCloud, but until CDs are extinct I expect the same attention to detail that I experience in all my other Apple products.

A one star review from an exclusive Apple user because I know they can do better.

Apple USB SuperDrive + MBA 2014

    • Written by from Pittsburg

Does not work, consistently ejects new discs saying insert blank disc have used CD-R & CD-RW in my attempts Itunes wont burn multiple cd's without needing to restart the application then still hit or miss on if itunes drive recognizes disc at all.
I am very disappointed actually that is an understatement, I spent $79+ for a drive that isnt super it isnt even ordinary I have busted out my ol school omega CD writer now just cant waist time trying to just burn a disc Ridiculous. no drivers plugins or anything that I can find to resolve all new equipment no excuses shame it should be seamless I should be able to purchase this "SuperDrive" that is an apple product connect it to my "Macbook Air" which needless to say is by apple and burn from Itunes without any issues don't you think? just a thought also if you MBA doesn't come with a CD/DVD Drive that product particularly should be seamless.

    Worst apple product available.

    • Written by from Minnetonka

I've never written a consumer review but this SuperDrive is absolutely horrible. I purchased this with my Macbook air and just a week after owning it, it no longer reads disks. I've tried troubleshooting the problem online, but to no end. Absolutely atrocious product.

    Good aesthetics, but scratches discs!!!!

    • Written by from laval

I bought this drive to go with the driveless macbook pro retina. It does it's job good when it's
plugged in a dedicated port (not divided by a hub). The problem arrives when inserting an audio disc
to rip. The opening is so slim that the cd has a chance to slightly touch and be scratch by it.
Not recommended for people who dont want their disks scratched.

Ate its first disk and won't eject!

    • Written by from Medfield

Awful experience with the drive, just terrible. There's no way to force eject a stuck disk without opening the case and that would void your warranty.
So it has eaten the first disk put into it, and there's no way to get it out.

    Beware Regional Limitation!

    • Written by from sSydney

This item has a Region Limitation for DVD's. When you plug it in for the first time you have to choose the region you are viewing the DVD from. Then you have only 5 more turns to change your DVD region before the Apple USB SuperDrive is locked permanently. If you travel the world with your laptop like me, or you buy DVDs from all over the world you'll be disappointed with the Covert Regional Limitation built into this device. Eventually you'll be forced to buy an Apple USB SuperDrive for every region in the world - and of course that is Apple's Sinister Marketing Plan. I returned my Apple USB SuperDrive to the shop and got a refund. Then I found an old portable DVD Burner/player without Regional Limitation and it works without having to choose a region. I recommend others to do the same..!

Slow and Never Will be Convenient

    • Written by from Newport News

I can understand Apples decision to eliminate the SuperDrive from the laptop line. It allows them to make thinner and lighter laptops. But eliminating the SuperDrive (and actually never offering a Blu-Ray drive) was ridiculous. There is no reason for them to eliminate the SuperDrive from the iMac line other than to save a few $$ and sell external drives at a much higher cost to consumers.

I was forced to purchase the external SuperDive because I still need access to CD's & DVD's. The external USB SuperDive is noticeably slower than built in drives. It takes longer to read, probably because it's a USB connection. Instead of having a clean desk with just a power chord now there this external drive sitting there taking up space and taking away from the clean look.

As a result of Apple eliminating the SuperDrive from the iMac line we have not purchased a new iMac in three years (I own a small company with 14 employees, all using iMacs). Instead we are now purchasing used iMac (2011 models preferably) on craigslist and eBay.

In fact, I'm writing this review with a 27" iMac that I purchased on craigslist. I know Apple is enjoying a lot of success, but as far as I'm concerned we won't be buying any new iMacs any time soon. One last point, Apple says it eliminated the SuperDrive and were able to make the iMac really thin along the edges, but the truth is the new iMac are fatter in the back. I like the 2011 design iMacs more. In this case thinner is most certainly not better.
